The most effective season on this ground for cod and cusk is from April to July. Hake abound in August and July. Hands lines and trawls are used here, fished by sloops and vessels. Matinicus Sou'Sou'West Grounds. These reasons bear SSW. from Matinicus Rock, from which the inner edge of the grounds is far-away 6 miles. They extend about 9 miles N. and S. and have approximately the same width, being virtually triangular in shape, broadest at the northern stop. On the northern aspect there is a shoal of around 30 fathoms 2 miles long E. and W. and 1 mile broad. The ground is not broken and drops off slowly to depths of 50 to 55 fathoms or even to 60 fathoms about the southern part, even though sharp rocks include this. Outside of the shoal the bottom is pebbly and gravelly. This is one of the best haddock and cod reasons in the vicinity. Cod are sometimes abundant on this page all winter; haddock are found here from December 1 to February and are much more abundant than the cod. Hake are plentiful on this ground and in 60 fathoms on the mud off the edge SE. of this ground during the summer season. Marks: The high pinnacle on the eastern end of Wood Ball, showing just out by Matinicus Rock, SW. by S. from the rock and roll, 5 miles. Inside Breaker. This lies 2 miles W. of the southwest point of Matinicus Island. It really is a rocky shoal about 1 acre in extent and having 7 fathoms of water. Matinic Banking institution. This is an extension of the shore soundings that make out to the

southward and eastward of Matinic a range of 2 or 3 miles, with depths (outside of 1? miles) of 23 to30 fathoms. It is considered fair minn kotaendura ground for cod and haddock in the spring and for cod and hake within the summer andtumble.

Freemans Ground. This ground lies 6? miles E. from Monhegan Island among Ornes Ground andMatinicus Western Terrain. It is 3 kilometers long and 1 mile wide and runs in a NE. and SW. route.There is a shoal around the southwest part getting 20 fathoms more than a sharp rocky bottom part.The rest of the ground has depths of 25 to 40 fathoms, the bottom of rocks, pea gravel, and shells, insome places uneven and then in others smooth. This is a great spring ground for cod and for cod,hake, and pollock in the fall. A few are often to be found here in Dec, although haddock are notnumerous on this soil. Herring are on this page May to August.

Middle Shoal, Pollock Rip, Allens Shoal, and Deckers Shoal. These are small rocky patches lying toeastward of Monhegan Island and northerly from the Outer Shoal. They have depths from 6 to 30fathoms over awell-defined and rocky, and broken bottom. Midsection Shoal is 2 miles from thetropical isle. Pollock Rip 1? miles. Allens Shoal 1 1/4 miles, possessing 5? fathoms and breaking inrough weather; and Deckers Shoal 1 mile. Depths vary on this page from 6 to 30 fathoms more thana bottom generally razor-sharp and rocky. The primary minn kota endura here is fingers-lining forcod in the spring throughout the herring season and then in the fall in "squid time". A few pollockare taken on this page also.

A number of small patches lie westerly from the Outer Shoal and close to Monhegan Island. Theseare the Cusk Ground with a degree of 20 to 35 fathoms; Gull Rock Ledge (splits in rough weather) 3?fathoms; Lobster Point Ground, 15 to 30 fathoms; Inner Spring Soil, 15 to 30 fathoms; OuterSpringtime Ground 25 to 30 fathoms. All of these are fished for cod nearly all the season, forhaddock in December and January, and for pollock in early spring and delayed fall. The SpringtimeGrounds are near to the harbor and so are fished before the others. They all are lobster grounds.Tiny vessels and watercraft operate here.

Black Island Ground. This ground is ENE. 2 miles from Monhegan. 1 distance in diameter, has a

shoal of 10 fathoms, and sharp rocky bottom in the center. The ground slopes gradually from thistowards the edges, where are 40 fathoms. Past the depths of 28 to 30 fathoms the bottom is gravellyand smoother. This is a cod ground in spring, and cod and hake are taken here on the edges intumble and summer. Pollock are found about the shoal in summer. It really is a good lobster terrain.

Franklin Ground. This ground is NE. by N. midway between Monhegan and Burnt Island, faraway 4miles. Cod and haddock can be found here from April to June and pollock in summer season. Burnt Island, Inner Ridge aka Andrews Shoal. This is NE. by E. from Monhegan, distant 5 mls. It is abroken ground with depths from 15 to 20 fathoms, the bottom difficult and gravelly, with occasionalmud slots. It extends NE. about 4 mls, nearly to Roaring Bull Ledge, and is also ? mile wide. You willfind strong tidal. The primary fishes taken arecod and cusk in the fall, summer time and spring. Very few haddock are found right here. Pollockare numerous inside the fall, when they are used by hand lining. Hill Soil. This ground is SSW 9 miles from Matinic: among 4 and 3 a long way long SW and NE andsome 2 miles wide. The shoalest part has 35 fathoms and a rocky bottom. The 45 Fathom Bunch. Sixteen miles S 1? E from Monhegan. This is a great soil for June fingerslining for cod. Thence 1 mile ENE to 70 fathom depth, which results in a piece of ground creatingthe Inner Fall, on which, on a hard bottom and mud where there is an abundance of "lemons" andsimilar forms, are normally found cod cusk and pollock in June. The ground is about 6 miles long,ENE and WSW by 1 mile wide.

Little Jeffrey. A small bit of broken, rocky underside, roughly circular in form. Depths average 35fathoms. Varieties and seasons are as on Aged Jeffrey, from which it lies about 4 miles NE by E.

Monhegan European Ground. This is a somewhat extensive ground telling lies about 4? miles WSWfrom Monhegan Island. The depths range from 22 to 45 fathoms. Its length is four to five miles, andits very best breadth is 2 miles on the eastern portion, gradually narrowing westward to about 1mile. The ground runs SE and NW. Pollock are found in October and September. It is fished yourselfgill, lines and trawls nets. Marks: Take houses on New Harbor over the bright white cliff onPemaquid 6 miles from New Harbor.

Cracked Ground. The heart bears nearly S. from Pumpkin Isle (at entrance to Boothbay Harbor),distant 7 miles. It extends 4 a long way in an ENE. and WSW direction and has an average width of1? miles. Depths are from 35 to 50 fathoms with a bottom of dirt and rocks. Cod are taken here theyear around; hake from June to September. Cusk are found here each of the year in 40 fathomsdepths. It is fair herring soil on spring times.

Great Ledge. Twenty miles S. from Cape Newagen. It is about 4 a long way long, SSW. and NNE andfrom 1 to 2 miles wide. It is chiefly a tiny-vessel and boat ground, sportfishing beingdone by hand collections and trawls, with some gill netting. Marks: Show the sawtooth of Morse'sHill coming out by Seguin on the western part; hold this until finally Pumpkin Island arrives ontoWhite Isle.

Barnum Head Reasons. These lie SSE. from Damariscove Tropical island and are about 1 mile longby 400 yards wide. Depths are from 40 to 70 fathoms over broken floor of sharp rocks on the shoals,with mud on the deeper parts. This soil is fished manually lines, gill nets, and trawls mostly by boatsand small craft. , and pollock are found in the fall and spring months:haddock and Cod hake in themuddy pieces in summer. Cusk Ridge. It lies S. ? E. 12 miles fromPumpkin Island, 3? to 4 miles long, NE.and SW., and 1/4 mile wide. This terrainis somewhat difficult to find. It possessesa bottom of black gravel and stones with30 to 60 fathoms of water over it. A"blistery" bottom that is a cod ground theyear around, the best of the sport fishingoccurring in the spring weeks. Hake arenumerous in the fall, and cusk fishing isexceptionally good from the deep waterin June.

Potato Repair. Three miles WNW. from Monhegan. A round nubble about 14 mile in diameter, ofwell-defined, rocky bottom getting about 40 fathoms over it. Cusk and cod are taken on the shoaland hake from the muddy edges regarding this.

The Apron. Four and one-half miles from Monhegan. Marks are the tripod on Eastern Egg cell Rockover Franklin Island Light; Monhegan Light over the middle of Manana. This shoal, called Mosers Ledge, is cracked and rocky but slopes graduallyfor the SW., reaching 48 fathoms, with a base of gravel and mud on the deepest part. The ground isaround 2 miles long NE. and SW. and about 1 mile wide. It is very good ground for haddock and codin the spring and for herring in June and other best-schooling seafood In their season. Mackereloccur in late Sept and August. It is actually a lobster ground the entire year around.

Johns Head Ground. About 4 miles SSE. from Pemaquid Point. Depths are from 25 to 15 fathomsspanning a sandy bottom, making a good cod terrain in April and May. The ground is of circular formabout 1 mile in diameter. Hand facial lines and trawls, along with some gill nets, are used on the finesand shoal.

White Island Ground. This is ESE from White Isle, from which its internal edge is distant ? mile andthe exterior edge about 4 miles. Of triangular outline, it is largest at the outer finish. It is verybroken and uneven and has depths from 6 to 30 fathoms. In the shoal it is distinct, broken rocks,

though in some places the base is gravelly. The tiny, rocky spots are known by other names, such asBrowns Head Ground (a herring ground in June), where the fishermen catch a few rock cod. Thesandy bottom furnishes excellent fares of haddock in June and might. "Bobber trawling" is the usualmethod used in June. This ground is fished primarily by small vessels and sloops utilizing hand linesand trawls.

Steamboat Terrain. Seven miles WSW. from Monhegan Tropical island; it is 3 a long way long, NE.and SW, and ? distance wide. Its underside is broken with patches of rocks. Depths are from 25 to 50fathoms, the shoalest 20 fathoms. This is fished by hand lines and trawls mainly by craft from NewHarbor. Cod are found here the year all around but are most ample in the fall. Haddock are presentall the drop and spring; hake through the summer months; pollock in the fall. Cusk are mostabundant in the spring. A certain amount of lobster minn kota endura is done on this page.

Outer and Inside Boutens (Bootlegs). The interior ground lies 3 miles SW. from Monhegan Island. Itcan be about 1 distance long. NE. and SW., by 1/4 mile wide. It has a well-defined, rocky bottom,shoalest in the center, in which are 25 fathoms, sloping gradually south west and falling off abruptlyon the northeast part to the mud in 60 fathoms on the edges. , and cusk are here the yeararound.Cod and haddock Hake happen in summer on the dirty edges. It is a relatively good lobsterfloor on the shoal. The Outer Bouten is placed ? mile SW. of the Inner, separated as a result by adeep, dirty channel. It has a small shoal of 30 fathoms rising all of a sudden from the surroundingdirt. seasons and Fish of their presence are as on Inner Bouten. Minn Kota Endura on these groundsis principally by hand line and trawl. Marks: The Tripod on Traditional western Duck Island aboutthe eastern side of the big eastern mountain of Camden: Black colored Head just out by White Mind;White Head from the "Hole inside the Wall."

Slope Ground. This terrain is SSW 9 miles from Matinic: between 4 and three miles long NE and SWplus some 2 miles broad. The shoalest component has 35 fathoms and a rocky bottom part. From thisit slopes gradually to a degree of 50 fathoms over a bottom of mixed stones, mud and pea gravel. Itsvery best fishing is for hake, using both palm lines and trawls.

Seguin Sou'Sou'West Ground. This ground lies SSW. from the western part of Seguin Island, thecenter faraway 4 miles. It is a rocky shoal, ? distance long by 200 yards wide, by using a ? -acreshoal in the center. Depths are 7 to 14 fathoms. This is certainly evidently a SSW continuation of theMountain Ground. It is fished by small watercraft for rock cod by hand-liner. Trawling is done inMarch for cod, and this is also a cod ground in April. It is each a small-vessel and a vessel soil and isa lobster ground the year all around. Marks: Elwells Rock touching the western side of Seguin, andFullers Rock and roll touching the the southern part of part of Bald Go.

Seguin Ridge. This ridge is SSW. from Seguin Tropical isle, distant 5 miles. Four miles lengthy. ESE.and WSW by ? mile large. There are a number of modest rocky spots--hummocks of 9 to 14 fathomsin depth. Generally the ground has from 10 to 40 fathoms over it, except as mentioned. Cod and cuskare taken in the spring, haddock in May and June. and hake in summer. This is a good cod ground inthe fall as well as a lobster ground. A number of pollock are seined here in the spring. Minn KotaEndura is by hand collections, gill netting, and trawling. Marks: Pond Island Light around theeastern spur of Seguin; Wooded Symbol Island on Bald Head (Small Stage).

Seguin Ground. This ground is SW. by S. from Seguin Island, far-away about 7 miles to the center.About 4 miles long. NE. and SW., and a little more than 2 miles broad in the widest portion. There isa small hummock called Bumpers Tropical island Ground on the north end with depths of 13fathoms. Toward the to the south the bottom is gravelly and sloping, in order that on the middle andsouthern portions you will find depths of 35 to 45 fathoms, even though the northern portion is

mostly rocky. Cod, hake, and pollock are the principal fish taken here and furnish some of the bestminn kota endura in this vicinity. Haddock are not common here but are abundant in the sandybottom to the westward in Apr and May. Trawl angling and gill netting are done in the spring forhand and cod lining for cod and pollock in October. It is a small-vessel and boat ground along with awinter lobster ground.
