In 1845 it was leased to his son-in-law, James Sampson, who provided visitors with hot brine baths. The bath is still at the Chine, it is a marble basin with a sloped back, two steps at the front and a wooden handrail. HOW DO YOU GET A BRINE BATH? Seawater from the bay was piped to the Fisherman’s Cottage and heated in a large copper tank by a fire underneath. Hot brine baths were thought to have special health-giving properties. These became less popular towards the end of the 19 th century when bathing in the sea became more popular. The cottage was occupied by the Colenutt family until 1960, when the home was flooded during a storm. Miss Colecutt was rescued from her kitchen by Charlie Spencer who heard her ringing her bell from the Chine Inn. Both the cottage and the Chine suffered substantial damage. Today the cottage, now the Fisherman’s Cottage Inn is a free house pub featured in the Good Pub Guide.
