Dear Friends,

At Hope Center for Children we celebrate a lot – birthdays, holidays, and milestones. Our most important celebrations are those we can share with friends – the successful graduation of a family from our Empowering Families child abuse prevention program; the arrival of a college acceptance letter for a teen girl living at Anchor House; the first steps of a child in our care at Faucette House emergency shelter.

Often, celebrations are the result of change and hard work. This year has been filled with both. When the dedicated staff and volunteers at Hope Center for Children worked for two years to implement best practices and ultimately earned COA Accreditation in March of 2016 – we celebrated. When year-end statistics showed that our programs reached 831 families and 2,183 children – we celebrated. When a new staffing model was implemented to provide more consistency for children in our emergency care – we celebrated. Your investment in change and hard work means we will have many more celebrations to come. Thanks for celebrating children with us this year!

Sincerely,

Will Yancey, 2015 Board Chair Chamlee Loscuito, CEO

A Helping Hand in Tough TimesDan*, self-employed, worked hard to make ends meet and take care of his family. However, healthcare expenses for his wife who was disabled drained their savings, and now their leaky roof had caused serious damage to the floor in their house. When concern was reported about the living conditions for their daughter, they were referred to the Empowering Families program at Hope Center for Children.

After visiting their home, their caseworker found that Dan had the skills to make the repairs himself. He was just unable to afford the materials needed, because on his single income, they were struggling to meet the most basic needs. He helped Dan apply for assistance with a local church to get funds for the materials needed for his home repairs, and even went with him to a home improvement store to create a list of needed materials and their cost. When the funds were approved, Dan was able to make the repairs and make their home safe again.

Their caseworker also guided the family to other community-based resources including help with

transportation, food, and even gifts for Christmas when there would have been none.

Accessing these community resources helped Dan and his family get through a tough time. They are so grateful for the help and guidance their caseworker provided!

Jason’s* mother had a challenging childhood characterized by abuse and violence. Now, as a single mother dealing with mental health issues and financial hardships, she has struggled to care for Jason’s needs. Jason’s mother has addiction issues and also chooses to be around others who sell and use drugs; she was incarcerated leading to Jason’s entry into DSS custody and removal from his home.

Once placed at Hope Center for Children’s emergency shelter Faucette House, Jason learned that when he cried, the adults taking care of him responded to his cries by meeting his needs. As he adjusted to his surroundings, he became more comfortable interacting and responded by laughing and smiling. Although he was not physically on mark developmentally, by the end of his stay, he caught up with other toddlers his age. He developed enough physical strength to progress from crawling to taking his very first step!
