Along with Mary Katherine, we are delighted to officially welcome back into the Paris First church family, Mary Catherine Lowe. Mary Catherine will be transferring her mem- bership back to her home church, having been able to relocate back to Paris over the summer. Over the last several years, Mary Catherine has been an acve part of Christ United Methodist Church in Franklin, and she has already agreed to provide leadership this year for our Club 56 Kids! We are blessed to welcome these new members! Be sure to let Mary Katherine and Mary Catherine know of your gladness for their presence with us! Next Sunday, October 18th, Paris First will be celebrang LAITY SUNDAY! This will be a day when we give thanks for the “priesthood of all believers!” In our bapsm, through confirmaon and at mes when we reaffirm our faith, we acknowledge as a part of Christ’s Holy Church we are all bound together by the love of God to be witnesses of God’s love in the world. The Church would not have existed for very long, if it had been solely dependent on the clergy to do the work of ministry. The pastor’s vocaon is to guide and nurture the congregaon. Together, clergy and laity are called to serve our neighbors, near and far. One of the strengths of the Methodist movement is that our pastors come and go, so that a congregaon does not become reliant on any pastor to carry the identy of the church. The strength of a congregaon is directly related to the commitment of the laity, (the membership) to offer themselves through their “ prayers, presence, giſts, service and witness” as they live out their faith. Elyse Bell, one of our own members, has a unique perspecve on the importance of developing strong lay leadership in con- gregaons. I first met Elyse several years ago, when I served as Superintendent of the former Jackson District and she served as Lay Resource Leader of the former Paris District. Elyse has many giſts that have been deployed to equip laity across the Memphis Conference over the last several years. We are blessed that Elyse is a part of the Paris First congregaon, and will be bringing our message on Laity Sunday! I look forward to sharing in worship with you all. Joy LETS GO TO THE PUMPKIN PATCH TOGETHER! Might we become a Partner of Hope?

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we live our lives, but it has not changed the mission of Hannah’s Hope,

the Adoption Agency of the Memphis Conference. Hannah’s Hope serves pregnant women in crisis and their vulnerable chil-

dren.

DID YOU KNOW?

Hannah’s Hope provides 2000+ hours of case management for vulnerable women and children each year

Hannah’s Hope has supported an average of 60 vulnerable women per year (over the past 10 years) in making a parenting plan

for their baby and in 2019 that number grew to over 100 women who made a parenting plan for their baby after receiving

counseling and case management services from Hannah’s Hope!

Hannah’s Hope has placed over 80 vulnerable children with forever adoptive families in the past 10 years.

Now, more than ever, the agency needs the support of congregations, UMW Circles, small groups and Sunday School classes to

sustain the ministry of Hannah’s Hope.

HANNAH’S HOPE needs a foundation of Partners of Hope who will commit to raising $5000 (or another level of giving) to sus-

tain this ministry.

This week our Mission Committee decided to share this need with our congregation to explore how we might be able

to help between now and Nov. 1st, which is Hannah’s Hope Sunday and the start of National Adoption Month. As a way to

celebrate the fundraising efforts of their Partners of Hope, the Hannah’s Hope Board will be offering a special reward for the

TOP 3 giving churches. The three churches that raise the most funds for Hannah’s Hope by November 1 will receive a free Vir-

tual Cooking Lesson with Chef Kelly English of Restaurant Iris and The Second Line of Memphis, TN!

OUR NURERY IS OPEN/ IN PERSON SUNDAY SCHOOL RESUMES

Ms. Tina is ready to welcome our infants and toddlers during both worship services! Children’s Church will start for preschoolers through second graders during our second service starting Oct. 18th Sunday school for children and youth and some of our adult classes have resumed in person meeting at 9:45 on Sunday! Those classes that are more comforta-ble continuing to meet on ZOOM are encouraged to do so. In order to gather as safely as possible, we will continue to wear our masks and practice safe distancing.

Prelude “Great is Thy Faithfulness” arr. Dan Miller Ben Phillips, organ

Welcome and Announcements Rev. Joy Weathersbee

Call to Worship “How Great Thou Art” Michael Holden, guitar

Hymn of Praise “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee” UMH #89

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away;

Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays,

Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise.

Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea,

Chanting bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in Thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blest,

Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest!

Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, all who live in love are Thine;

Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine.

Mortals, join the happy chorus, which the morning stars began; Love divine is reigning over us, binding all within its span.

Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife, Joyful music leads us sunward, in the triumph song of life.

Sharing of Joys and Concerns, Pastoral Prayer and The Lords Prayer Rev. Joy Weathersbee

Scripture Reading Philippians 4:1-13 Pew Bible pg. 198 NT

Hymn of Preparation “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” UMH# 526

What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!

Oh, what peace we often forfeit, oh what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged, take it to the Lord in prayer Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness take it to the Lord in prayer

Are we weak and heavy-laden, Cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge—Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer! In His arms He’ll take and shield thee, Thou wilt find a solace there.

Renunciation of Sin and Profession of Faith Rev. Joy Weathersbee

Pastor: Do you, as Christ’s body, the church, reaffirm both you rejection of sin and your commitment to Christ? Congregation: We do. Pastor: Will you nurture one another in the Christian faith and life and include Mary Katherine Grooms and

Mary Catherine Lowe now before you in your care? Congregation: With God’s help, we will proclaim the good news and live according to the example of Christ. We will surround Mary Katherine and Mary Catherine with a community of love and forgiveness, that they may grow in their trust of God and be found faithful in their service to others. We will pray for them, that they may be true disciples who walk in the way that leads to life.

Affirmation of our Faith “The Apostle’s Creed”

Pastor: Let us join together in professing the Christian faith as contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New

Testaments. Do you believe in God the Father? All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Pastor: Do you believe in Jesus Christ? All: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. Pastor: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? All: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Confirmation, Reaffirmation of Faith and Reception into the Church

Hymn of Invitation “Rejoice, the Lord is King” UMH #715

Rejoice, the Lord is King! Your Lord and King adore; Mortals, give thanks, and sing, And triumph evermore;

Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

Jesus, the Savior, reigns, the God of truth and love; When He had purged our stains He took His seat above;

Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

His kingdom cannot fail, He rules o’er earth and Heaven, The keys of death and hell are to our Jesus given;

Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

Rejoice in glorious hope! Jesus the Judge shall come, And take His servants up to their eternal home;

We soon shall hear the archangel’s voice; The trump of God shall sound, rejoice!
