FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF DELAND JULY, 2011

And as you do, you’ll discover that by putting

others first, God will bring others to encourage

you. And that is one of the best ways to keep

negativity at bay. It is a great way to know His

presence in the midst of a very difficult society

in which we live.

See you in Church!

Pastor Owen

Summer Worship

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of do-

ing, but let us encourage one another. (Hebrews 10:24-25a )

Life can be chaotic. And when it is, it’s easy

for us to become hyper-focused on ourselves.

We convince ourselves that we simply don’t

have time to be concerned about other peo-

ple or their needs. "After all," we think, "look

at everything I have to deal with!" We don’t

have time to come to worship…Sunday is the

only time we have free.

The Hebrew writer says, “Let us not give up

meeting together, as some are in the habit of

doing…” The summer months are very invit-

ing to give up meeting together as the Body of

Christ. After all, the summer is about vaca-

tions, free time, and days on the lake, sitting

on the beach…isn’t it? I heard someone say,

“I can worship God a lot easier while on my

boat fishing.” I don’t doubt that it is possible

to do so, but what about the fellowship, spur-

ring one another, encouraging one another?

Living with an "it’s all about me" mindset,

we’re actually more susceptible to negativity.

And that can generate a bitter and lonely life-

style that distracts us from fulfilling God’s de-

sire.

God created all of us to be social beings. So

the next time you feel overwhelmed with the

schedule of your calendar or the pace of life,

don’t shut people out; don’t skip the power of

fellowship with other believers. Instead, con-

sider others; consider what it means to God to

have the family together, worshipping Him.

Find a way to encourage someone in the spirit

of Christ. Support the time we have together

as a Body.

MAN

OF

GOD

On Thursday, June 23, Pastor Owen dis-

cussed at the Devotional study "Man of God"

that given out on Father’s. He informed us of

how to participate via the FUMC website and

Blogging. We hope you all tap into this learning

experience. The UMM voted to sponsor this

program by supplying the books. If you didn’t

receive one, please contact the church of-

fice. We will be having a special Methodist

Men's meeting with supper on July 14, at 6:30

p.m. which is the last day of the study.

The next District meeting will be held on

Thursday, July 28. Watch the bulletin for de-

tails.

Hard to believe the year is half over,

summer is defiantly here and the flags

flying high, could only mean one thing —

Independence Day is near. To bring everyone

up to speed, we have been blessed with your

donations so that we could send 70 pack-

ages to great Service Men and Women

serving our country overseas.

Our most recent package we sent was to A/C Nicholas

Smith (Donna Then's nephew) who is currently deployed in

Iraq. Pastor Owen recently read a letter he wrote to us during

our June 5th service. I’d like to relay to you a few things from

Nicholas’ note.

“Thank you all at First United Methodist Church of De-

land for your prayers, love, and package. . . The things you

sent were perfect, I also shared with people on my crew. In my

unit there are over 150 troops and our detachment is close to

300. If you would like to send more packages I could leave a

box in our main leadership tent for people to grab goodies. . .

Thanks again, and please keep us in your prayers!"

These few lines moved me......I would love, hope, and

pray to get these items sent to this unit and your help is needed

for this to happen. While we have received great donations, we

have no where near enough items to send packages to this

many Service Men and Women. To give you an idea of what

all a package includes here is a list of what all goes in a gallon

size zip lock bag: (please keep in mind everything is travel size

as many of these great men and women do carry these items

with them most of the time) toothbrush, toothpaste, dental

floss, mouthwash, Visine eye drops, shampoo, liquid body

wash, disposable razors, handy wipes, kleenex, lotion, hand

sanitizer, chapsitck, pen, small notebook, envelopes, letters

from anyone who chooses to write a small note of encourage-

ment, a colorful picture provided from the great kids at Freedom

Elementary, and a small American Flag that they can stick in

their pocket and keep at all times. In a bulk box we may in-

clude books, magazines, hard candy, powder drink packets,

gum, and a large American Flag that has encouraging words

from you. A flag is placed in the Life Enrichment Center hall-

way for you to sign, I encourage everyone to sign this flag with

encouraging words, your name, and where you originated from,

as well as donating items that can be sent to this unit. A goal

has been set that by the end of July we have enough items to

gather a team of people together and prepare as many of them

as possible.

Please keep Nicholas, as well as all Service Men and

Women and their families, in your prayers and show them our

gratitude for what they do for us. Please contact our church

office or Leslie Anderson [email protected] for any

questions. Thank you, have a safe blessed Independence Day.

The past two weeks have been very busy for the youth in our church! We kicked off our summer youth schedule with Youth Week - June 8-11. We all had a great time going to places like Wonderworks in Orlando, the beach and to the Epcot theme park! It was an exciting time to plug in new members of our youth group and to get to know the rising sixth graders.

The very next week many of the youth participated and helped out with the church’s VBS. There were over 200 chil-dren here, so it required a lot of help. I am very proud of all the youth that stepped up and served for that whole week. It can be very exciting, but also draining. They all did a won-derful job. After VBS each day we had our 2nd Annual Taste of Deland where the youth walked to a local restaurant to eat after VBS. We had about 20 students go each day.

Youth have the chance to take part in two mission trips this year. Eighteen middle and high school students went to Louisville, Kentucky, this year, and nine high school students are going out of the country to Costa Rica. Please be praying for the youth on these trips and for them once they get back. Pray that God would work in and through them on the trip and continue that work when they get back home. The Louisville trip is June 26-July 2nd and the Costa Rica trip is July 23-30. Plus many are going to camp July 11-16.

During the summer we meet every other Wednesday

night (June 8, 22, July 6, 20, and August 3) from 6-7:30 for a

series called Mythbusters. There will be hangout time in the

beginning and then we will have some interactive myth-

busting as well as a time to tackle some of the spiritual

myths currently in the youth culture. We have many events

going on throughout the summer, including a bowling night

on Sunday July 10th, an all-nighter from 7 pm on August 5th

to 7am on August 6th, and a beach day on Wednesday Au-

gust 17th.

If you need more information on any of these summer

activities, check out our website at www.fumcdeland.org or

call the Youth Ministry office at 386-734-5113 ext. 210.

What Can Gift Cards

Do?

Have you bought any Gift Cards from our United Methodist Men?

Let me tell what these cards have meant to the First United Methodist Church of DeLand! Of each purchased from the UMM, a percent-age comes back to them as a rebate. In the first year, the UMM handled over

$88,000 and made a gross profit of over $3,200. Moneys have been spent on many dif-ferent programs within the church — Painting of the sanctuary and LEC, Church Picnic, Pizza for the Children's Christmas Party, Prizes for money makers, Youth Programs, & Remodel-ing of the new offices. In June, the profits helped support our Vacation Bible School of over 200 children. For the summer, all profits will go into the budget. Giving slows down over the summer, but expenses don’t. Support the church by buying Gift Cards.

Plan now for the tax-free, back-to-school time. To order -.see a UMM member on Sundays at the Gift Card table, or contact Don West at [email protected].

Please come join us on Wednesdays at 5:00 PM in the sanctuary for our prayer time. We are lifted up as we pray for our country, state, commu-nity, church, and each other. God is faithful and not only hears, but

answers our prayers on behalf of others. Remember the first Wednesday is our special healing service.
