PRAYING THE NEWS | NOVEMBER 29, 2020
“Yet, O LORD, you are our father; we are the clay and you the
potter...”
ISAIAH 64:7O God, as this Advent begins, the whole world waits —
for mercy, healing, renewal and reconciliation. May we not let
ourselves be shaped by anger and mistrust, or become hardened of
heart in the furnace of these times. Help us submit, instead, to
molding by your gracious hands. May we emerge stronger — willing to
listen, to share and to help mend the broken. Make us your works of
love.
Jesus, we trust in you. Amen.
4
GOOD NEWS REFLECTION
Pray: My Lord and my God, may my spirit always be attentive to
Your Spirit so that the traps of this world do not catch me off
guard and keep me away from You. Amen.
A GIFT FOR JESUSToday we begin the Season of Advent. This year,
as we prepare for Christmas, think about how you like to show your
fondness for the special people in your life by choosing gifts that
will be meaningful to them. And yet, assuming that you can actually
find something (or make something) that will be appreciated, does
it always make a difference in the long run?
How many gifts have you given in the past that became mere
dust-collectors? Which ones turned out to be truly valuable with a
long-lasting impact?
Since Christmas is the celebration of the birthday of Jesus,
let's remember to give him a gift, too. God deserves more gifts
than anyone else, but what do you give to someone who already has
everything? Or does he?
What gift can you give to Jesus that will have an eternal
impact, a gift that no one else can give him, a gift he doesn't
already have? What have you been withholding from him? What talent
or activity or ministry or commitment or change in lifestyle?
This Sunday's first reading reminds us that God is our Father.
The responsorial Psalm asks the Father to help us turn to him. The
second reading gives thanks to God for all that he has done for us.
So — what gift can you give to God to express your appreciation for
what he has given to you?
In the Gospel reading, we're reminded of the need to prepare -
to actually do something that makes a difference — for the coming
of Christ. This not only refers to his Second Coming. It's also
about the day when he comes for us as we breathe our last earthly
breath. It's about the way he wants to come to you during this
year's Season of Christmas. And it's about the way he is coming to
you right now, today.
There's something new that he wants to give you. When he offers
it, will he find you doing what's right (as in the first reading)?
Will he find you using your spiritual gifts (as in the second
reading)? Will he find you alert and ready to do his bidding (as in
the Gospel reading)?
Advent is an opportunity to take notice of the gifts he gives us
and for becoming aware of the gifts we can give to him that he
doesn't already have. It should make an eternal difference — for
him and for us.
Questions for Personal Reflection: List the gifts that God has
given to you. Write them on a sheet of paper. Then think about how
much appreciation you have given to God for the gifts on that list.
Do you know how much he appreciates your appreciation?
Questions for Family or Community Faith Sharing: Name some of
the obvious ways that Jesus comes to us today. What are some
unexpected ways that Jesus has revealed himself to you? What will
you do this Advent to become more aware of Jesus coming to you? How
will this make you more ready for Christmas?

PARENTS WITH CHILDREN 6TH GRADE & ABOVEThe Archdiocese of
Galveston-Houston is currently developing plans for a technical
secondary education option for students by looking at the
feasibility of a Catholic Career-Technical High School or CCTHS.
The Development Committee of the CCTHS Advisory Board has planned
an initial curriculum based on 10-year job projections for
high-wage, high-demand careers within the Houston metroplex, as
well as throughout the country. The goal is to provide a truly
unique, Catholic centered, technical high school education to
students looking to develop skills that will allow them to enter
the workforce directly out of high school or move on to the college
experience of their choice. Parents of children 6th grade and older
are invited to participate in an interest survey before 11/30 by
accessing this link: archgh.cvent.com/CCTHS
REGISTER NOW: WKND 2021 RETREAT FOR TEENSRegistration for WKND
2021, the annual retreat for high school teens in Grades 9-12, is
now open! It’s set for January 15-18, 2021, at Forest Glen Camp and
Retreat Center in Huntsville, Texas. COVID protocols will be
followed so that we can still provide this unforgettable weekend of
community, the outdoors, high ropes, games, sports, and prayer.
It’s a weekend your teen won’t want to miss! Contact Mike Cleary
for more info at [email protected] and register at

DEC 6: SPECIAL ADVENT & CHRISTMAS LIFE NIGHT
Another Christmas is almost here, along with the annual
onslaught of Christmas music, movies, lights, shopping lists, ads,
and inflatable lawn ornaments. We all know the Christmas season is
supposed to be about generosity, family, and celebrating the gift
of Jesus… but be honest… How much time
do you spend thinking about yourself and what you want? Teens
are invited on Sunday, December 6, following the Life Teen Mass for
a very special Life Night to look back to the very first Christmas,
a day that was only possible because of the selflessness,
generosity, and sacrifice of God and God’s people. On that first
Christmas, Mary & Joseph gave up their comfort, the shepherds
gave their stories, the wise men gave their worship, and God gave
everything. So this Christmas, what will you give in response? For
more info, contact Mike Cleary, [email protected].

NAME THAT SAINTBorn the son of Italian sharecrop-
pers and one of 13 children, this saint was elected pope on
October 28, 1958, at the age of 77. Because of his age, many
expected him to be a “stop gap” pope, but he was very active during
his papacy. This saint was known for slipping out of the Vatican
late at night to walk the streets of Rome, and he was the first
pope in the 20th century to make pastoral visits to prisons and
hospitals in the Diocese of Rome.
This saint is best known for con-vening the Second Vatican
Council less than three months after his election to the papacy. He
had no detailed plan for the council other than a very general idea
of aggior-namento, or “bringing up to date,” and a desire to seek
Christian unity.

Q.What’s the Mass schedule for Immaculate Conception?
A.Oh, you mean my anniversary working here? That’s right,
I’ll
be celebrating my 23rd year here! I can’t believe that I lasted
here this long, just sayin. Anyway, back to the Holy Day! It’s a
little different this year. We are not having a vigil the night
before. Also, we are not recording it. But on Tuesday, December 8,
Masses will be at 7:30am, noon, (also known as 12 o’clock!) and
6:30pm. Wait, I have more news… On Wednesday December 9, there will
not be a 6:30pm Mass, cause all the priests are going to the
Co-Cathedral to pray vespers (evening prayer) with Cardinal
DiNardo. This is not a party, no dinner because of COVID, just
sayin.

IN SERVICE: CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS & KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
SOCIAL CONCERNS RESPONDS IN LOVE DURING PANDEMIC
N O V 3 0 : W E E K DAY M O R N I N G M A S S R E T U R N S
The Catholic Daughters & Knights of Columbus both exist to
promote religious, charitable and educational support for the
parish and community. Both groups found creative ways to serve
during the pandemic. Our Catholic Daughters delivered over 2,500
granola bars to be given to the healthcare heroes on the frontline
fighting the pandemic. And earlier this month, the KCs inspired
families to stay home and have a fun evening together by creating
an Easy Friday Dinner drive-up event. In total, they prepared
and sold 183 meals, plus donated meals to our priests and
firefighters. All proceeds benefited charity. Contact Pam White
([email protected]) to join CDA and JD Gutierrez
([email protected]) for info about the Knights.
The Social Concerns Ministry is honored to serve our community
during these difficult times and humbled by the kind words of
support and gratitude we have received. These words of thanks
belong to you! Thank you for your support, generosity and for
making a difference to so many. Below is a highlight of what you
have made possible over the past nine months:
• $62,000 in rent & utilities to hundreds of people
struggling due to COVID
• Counseling & medical assistance for several families
• Food & toiletries to 115 families/individuals in
