The one-year anniversary of me coming to First Presbyterian Church of West Plains may not produce the same exuberance as the rebuilding of the Jerusa-lem wall but as we close out our first year together in ministry it is fitting ac-knowledging all we have accomplished. Though a cursory glance at our minis-try may not appear different from 2015, we have accomplished a great deal in terms of stabilizing our ministry and beginning to look forward to the year’s changes to come. As we move into the summer months, we will have the opportunity to bask in the beauty God has lavished upon the Ozarks. For me, the beauty of the area gives a different perspective on life and society. There is a great deal to celebrate this summer, not the least of which will be our continued service to the West Plains community. We have a great deal to be proud of and will continue our progress into the future as our relationships deepen and mature throughout the next year. Enjoy the time off, always remembering the call Jesus Christ has extended to you.

West Plains to Host Presbytery Gathering On Monday, August 1, we will host a John Calvin Presbytery meeting, the sec-ond of three presbytery meetings in 2016. Some 65 representatives from the 48 churches in the presbytery (from as far west as Iola, KS, and north to Rolla) are expected to come to West Plains to conduct church business and worship with fellow Presbyterians. Activities run from 8:30 a.m. to about 3:30 p.m. Our hospitality and historic home will be on display. As we act together to serve the larger church, watch for the many ways you can take part.

All at 9 a.m. Sunday

Adult Bible Study Craig Albin/Jay Padgett The group is studying women in the Bible. Meets in Fellowship Hall.

Contemporary Christian Topics Carol Silvey Subjects vary and are chosen by the class, whose members sometimes lead the discussion. In the li-brary.

Children & Youth The class has ad-journed for the sum-mer, to resume Au-gust 21 with the new school year. Youth activities will be held periodically in the summer—now in the planning stages. Watch for details.

Babies & Preschoolers The nursery down-stairs is open Sun-days 9 -11 a.m.

Mission Focuses on All Sorts of ‘Kids’ Three youth events this summer will link missions and Christian Education. While children and youth take a break from traditional Sunday school, they will be raising money to supply livestock (goats) through the Heifer Project to those in far-off lands. Details and dates are being worked out, but a carwash and a pancake supper are being considered as ways for the youth to raise money to provide kids at $178 per pair. Once the funds are raised, a celebratory fish fry at the home of Chuck and Robin Morgan is planned. So, when a “kid” asks you for help to raise money for a “kid,” say yes! Watch for more information as it becomes available.

Prayer concerns: The nation; our troops; disaster-stricken parts of the world.

Congratulations to our pastor, Tim Stover, and Gay Watson, who were married April 3 at the church.

Craig Albin, professor of English at MSU-WP, recently had a book of stories published. For more about Hard Toward Home, ask Craig or go to www.press53.com.

Jack McNevin received the 2016 Distinguished Zizzer Alumni Award at the WPHS graduation ceremonies May 12.

Graduates honored May 1 after Worship included, from left, Allison Bodenhamer, Sarah Grisham, Jake Garrett, Devin Schmitt, and Samson Hershenson. Sarah, Jake, and Devin completed WP High School, and Allison and Samson fin-ished WP Middle School. Congratulations also to Keaton Morgan, though not pictured, who graduated from Vanderbilt Medical School.

Presbytery Shares Funds for Mission Each of the 48 churches in John Calvin Presby-tery received $2,000 in May for missions. Upon sale of the Springfield property that housed the old presbytery offic-es, the General Council of the presbytery voted to use part of the pro-ceeds for missions in this way. All churches may use the money as they wish, but they must tell the presbytery how the funds are used. Contact Sylvia Hersh-enson (Missions Chair of Session) or the pastor if you have ideas about how our church’s funds should be used.

Sponsor the flowers in the sanctuary Sunday morning to honor a person or event. Use an envelope in the pew

racks, go online or call.

Westminster Guild hosted a salad lunch for the Willow Springs and Mtn. View Presbyterian women on May 12. As part of the program, Dr. Stover shared his first-hand knowledge of the often-overlooked needs of Christians in Syria. After its meeting June 9, the Guild will break until Sept. 8, when monthly meetings resume with a new Bible study.

These Days, devotional booklets for July 1 -Sept. 30, may be picked up June 26 and later in Fellow-ship Hall.

Looking ahead to August 1, we are hosting guests from all over our Presbytery (see p. 1). Help will be needed providing directions inside and outside the building; registration duties; serving and providing food. Say “yes!” when you’re asked to help, or call the church office to offer assistance.

Craig Albin and Robin Morgan, both ruling elders, have been elected to serve 3-year terms on presby-tery committees. Craig will be an Ordination
