Friends in Christ, today with the whole church we enter the time of remembering Jesus’ passover from death to life, and our life in Christ is renewed. We begin this holy season by acknowledging our need for repentance and for God’s mercy. We are created to experience joy in communion with God, to love one another, and to live in harmony with creation. But our sinful rebellion separates us from God, our neighbors, and creation, so that we do not enjoy the life our creator intended. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to a discipline that contends against evil and resists whatever leads us away from love of God and neighbor. I invite you, therefore, to the discipline of Lent— self-examination and repentance, prayer and fasting, sacrificial giving and works of love—strengthened by the gifts of word and sacrament. Let us continue our journey through these forty days to the great Three Days of Jesus’ death and resurrection. - sundaysandseasons.com. This year at First Lutheran this invitation takes on new meaning as we journey through this time of transition. My prayer is that our self- examination and our works of love might center on where we see the very breath of God, the Holy Spirit at work in our congregation and community. So I invite you to keep your eyes open, to take note of your encounters with the Holy Spirit, and to give voice to where you see God at work. My hope is that through our self-examination and our works of love we will give voice to where God may be leading us. Lastly, I would ask that each of you during this time of Lent pray. Lift up prayers of celebration for the work the Holy Spirit has begun, prayers of wisdom and strength for our church leaders, and prayers that where God leads we will confidently follow.
