In winning its 11th city championship under coach Willie West, Crenshaw defeated Manual Arts 85-72. It was the Toilers first '89 loss, leaving them 24-1 following the championship game. Crenshaw beat Manual Arts 83-67 for the title in last year's finale. Crenshaw defeated Kennedy (62-48), Westchester (97-80) and Fair- fax (60-47) before the title encounter with the Toilers. Manual elim- inated Narbonne (97-47), Washington (80-69) and Carson (50-44) on its way to the title round. Stefon Davis of Jordan and Fremont High's Tyrone Phillips for 3-A Div-

ision MVP honors.

Fremont won the 3-A Division Championship, 65-48, over Los Angeles

High School. Fremont defeated Eagle Rock (96-57), University (58-5D

and El Camino Real (66-63) before testing the Romans. Los Angeles got

over Poly (86-73), Bell (55-53) and Wilson (53-39) before losing to the

Pathfinders. Fremont finished i ts city season 26-3, while L.A. wound

up 17-9.

In Southern California playoff action, Crenshaw repeated i t s city

playoff victory over Manual Arts, 8k-72, to advance to the state finals

against Skyline High of Oakland. Crenshaw had defeated Edison of Fresno

in the semi-final of the Southern Cal tournament....110-92.

Manual Arts eliminated 3-A champion Fremont 65-6k in overtime to

advance to the Southern Cal f inals. Fremont had disposed of Millikan

(66-60) in the f i rs t round, while Manual eliminated Capistrano Valley

(69-63).

All players named for All-City Basketball Team honors will receive

beautiful scroll awards from First Interstate Bank - Amateur Athletic

Foundation of Los Angeles. Medals and plaques will be awarded Players

of the Year and championship coaches.

THE 1989 SEASON BY MEMBERS OF THE FIRST INTERSTATE BANK- AMATEUR ATHLET-

IC FOUNDATION OF LOS ANGELES' BOARD OF SPORTS JOURNALISTS.

In leading S t . Bernard to the El Caraino League t i t l e , Ed Stokes

scored an average of 25 po in t s per game and averaged f ive b locks . He

was 5th. in the C . I . F . Southern Section in rebounds with an average of

15 over the team's 29-game season (23-6) .

S t . Bernard advanced to only the second round of the Southern

Section playoffs before los ing t o Ci t rus Belt League kingpin Redlands,

65-56. Millikan won the 5-AA t i t l e game, 62-59 in overtime, agains t

Saddleback.

In the 5-A p layof f s , Capistrano Valley won the t i t l e . The South

Coast League Champions defeated league runner-up I r v i n e , 76-Ij.9» in the

f ina l e advancing t o the Southern Cal P layoffs .

Neither Divis ion I en t ry got past the f i r s t round of play in the

s t a t e p layof f s . Mill ikan l o s t to Fremont of Los Angeles (66-60), while

Capistrano Valley was dropped by LA's Manual Arts (69-63)•

OVER A 31-3 CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON, MURRAY AVERAGED 44.26 POINTS PER

GAME...A C . I . F . SOUTHERN SECTION AND CALIFORNIA STATE RECORD. IN THE FINAL

WEEK OF THE REGULAR SEASON, MURRAY HAD ALREADY BECOME THE STATE'S TOP ALL-

TIME CAREER SCORER (2,705 POINTS).

Playing every p o s i t i o n on the f loor a t one time or another during

the season, Murray led the Tartans t o the Base l ine League Championship and

in to the Southern Sec t ion 4.-AA playoff . Although Murray scored l{.l po in t s

in the t i t l e game aga in s t San Bernardino, the Tar tans l o s t 72-69 to the

Cardinals who completed a pe r fec t 30-0 season.

Both Glendora and San Bernardino q u a l i f i e d for the Southern Cal

p layof f s , meeting in the s e m i - f i n a l game. The Tar tans defeated San Ber-

nardino t h i s t ime, 52-I4.6 and then edged Dominguez, the Southern Sect ion

4-A champ, 61-57, for the Southern Cal t i t l e .

Advancing to the S t a t e Championships aga ins t Menlo-Atherton of the

Cent ra l Coast S e c t i o n , Murray scored 61j. po in t s in a los ing cause . Menlo

School won the Div i s ion I I crown, 89-83 .

Dominguez, the San Gabrie l Val ley League champs, won the 4-A South-

ern Sec t ion t i t l e wi th wins over Cypress (6ij.-33), Rosemead (86-66) , Barstow

(54-36) and Ar tes ia in the f i n a l (78-^9) . Dominguez beat Monache of the

Cent ra l Sect ion (78-37) and Torrey Pines (78-70) before going down before

CALLED BY HIS COACH RAINER WULF, "THE MOST DOMINANT PLAYER IN

EVERY ONE OF OUR GAMES THIS YEAR," SWANWICK SCORED EVERY SECOND-HALF

POINT IN TRABUCO HILLS' LOSS TO THE NORTHERN CALIFCRNIANS. AT 6-10 AND

225 POUNDS (HE HAD TRIMMED OFF 65 POUNDS OVER LAST SUMMER) SWANWICK WAS

TRULY A "DOMINANT" FORCE.

Winner of the P a c i f i c Coast League, the Mustangs had few problems

in cap tu r ing the Southern Sec t ion 3-A championship. With wins over Fancho

Alamitos (8i|.-58), Savanna (75-68) , S s t anc i a (75-71) and San Luis Obispo

(65-52) they advanced t o the Southern Ca l -p layof f s wi th a t i t l e - w i n over

Corona del Mar (59-55)•

In Southern Cal play, the Mustangs defeated Clairemont of San Diego

(87-60), Lemoore of the Central Section (86-79) and Morningside of the

Southern Section (60-57) to grab the Southern California gold ring.

In selecting this year's all-star teams, the committee followed the

California State format of placing teams in divisions by school enrollment.

A transfer from Rim of the World High School where he scored anaverage of 29.5 points last year, he averaged 21.8 points this season.He averaged six rebounds, three blocks, 2.5 assists and 2.6 steals duringthe season, which saw the Saints go 27-3. Two of the losses were for-fe i t s .

Tarver is joined on the Division IV all-star team by teammatesBubba Burrage and Art Santana. Both Tarver and Burrage were 2-A divis-ion second team members last year.

Two other players are back from last year's all-star team. JamesLoggins from Cabrillo was a 2-A division second-teamer in '88 and JeffZelenski of Paraclete was on the 1-A team last year.

The selection committee changed i ts format of selection this yearfollowing the state playoff bracketing (by enrollment). Also, any teamf;

"playing up" in the playoffs are considered in that division for the sel-ections.

coach Bob Brown's Whittier Christian Heralds won the 2-AA championship.Santa Clara waltzed through Southern Section play — 77-53 over St .

Bonaventure, 71+-59 over St . Anthony and 78-51+ over Orange Lutheran forthe championship. The Saints got over Washington Union of Fresno to winthe Southern Cal Division IV t i t l e and outscored Cardinal Newman of SantaRosa 6l-i;8 for the California State crown.

Aside from the two forfeited games, Santa Clara's only season loss wasto Edison, Huntington Beach, 39-38.

Whittier Christian defeated Aquinas 70-62, Bell-Jeff 80-52, El Segundo71-57 and Banning 69-67 in overtime for the 2-AA championship. The Heraldswon over Coronado 69-58 in Southern Cal play, but then lost to WashingtonUnion of Fresno 7l+-6l....to end i t s season 23-7.

Brea-Olinda's Ladycats waltzed through Southern Section 3-A compe-t i t i o n , defeating three of t he i r opponents by 29 poin ts or more. The onlyteam to give the champions a game was S t . One-A Division Champion Mission Frep won the Southern Section t i t l e60-43 over Bishop Diego, The champs from San Luis Obispo also won theSouthern California Division V t i t l e , 52-J4.8, over Avenal of the CentralSection. Menlo School of Atherton defeated the Royals In the statefinals, 5>2-lj.l. Mission Prep wound up i ts season 2i|.-I|. and was on a 20-garae win streak prior to the Menlo finale.

Small Schools Division Champion Baptist Christian of Hemet defeatedthe Pilgrim Patriots of Los Angeles £0-ij.7 in the t i t l e decider. BeckyDrew of Baptist Christian, a repeater from last year's Small Schools team..led al l scorers with 30 points.

In the second round of the Southern Cal playoffs, Mission Prep de-feated Baptist Christian $k-k$ on i t s way to the Southern CaliforniaChampionships.
