Dear Members of First ARP, This year, our Session has decided to take part in the My Hope with Billy Graham movement. (please visit myhopewithbillygraham.org for more information) Essentially, it is a concerted and intentional effort to carry out the Great Commission. Before you tune me out or become skeptical, please at least commit yourself to finishing this brief article. Several months ago, I attended the training for this 'program' in Columbia. As I drove down that morning, I was skeptical, cynical, and a few other things that pastors can't write. I came back fully convinced that God is moving through this work by Billy Graham's organization. So what is it and what are you asking me to do, pastor? Simply this: pray. Unlike before, however, I want you to pray very specifically and very intentionally. Here's the gist of the program: we, at First ARP, commit ourselves to praying for God's Holy Spirit to move in our midst. And he does all the rest of the work, literally. So what's the catch . . . how is this different from things we're already doing or have done in the past? Nuts 'n' Bolts: In a few weeks (June 16), Barry will give a more evangelistic-leaning (I say 'leaning' b/c all sermons are really evangelistic, right?) sermon from Romans 10. On that Sunday, we will hand out 'My Hope' brochures. Many of you have done similar programs—the brochure has a list with 10 spaces on it. You fill out that list (as best as you can at the moment . . . for instance, mine only has 2 names on it currently). And you begin to pray two things: “Holy Spirit, help me to develop deeper relationships with these people in the hope of sharing the Gospel” and “Holy Spirit, please introduce me to more people who need the Gospel.” Simple, right? Just pray. That's all I'm asking you to do. But like I said, I want you to pray specifically and intentionally. Then, wait for God to do the work. After all, it is him doing the work anyway, is it not? Let us take a Gospel-stand, together, for those lost and broken around us. I'm in this with you. More instructions will follow. For now, let us pray . . .
Philip MARK IT DOWN: June 16th, 'My Hope' Sunday – Regular Worship Services. Joint Sunday School (w/ brunch!) in Robinson Hall at 10:00 AM (middle school thru adults).
