Keen? Here's what you need to know...

Where and when is it taking place?

What does the experience involve?

How much does it cost? You can secure your place today by paying a £150 registration fee – and then the target for each participant is to reach a minimum sponsorship total of £500. At least the first £300 of that target will need to be paid to the hospice – either by you, or through online sponsorship platforms like Just Giving, Virgin Money or Give Penny – at least two weeks ahead of the experience.

Who is organising it – and is it safe?

Each wing-walker will receive a full safety briefing and then enjoy a one-to-one with the expert pilot who will be taking them into the air, during which you can choose which manoeuvres you are brave enough to take on. You will enjoy an exhilarating series of flypasts, zoom climbs, steep dives and banks in a once-in-a-lifetime experience like no other. You will spend 10-12 minutes in the air. Please note that no first-time wing-walker is permitted to do a loop the loop – but it’s nice to save something for next time anyway!

Our wing-walking day will be held on 21 June 2019 at RFC Rendcomb Airfield, The Whiteway, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, GL7 7DF. This is a private airfield owned by Aerosuperbatics – a display team considered to be the world’s most established and experienced wing-walking team. Driving to the venue takes approximately 75 minutes from Weston-super-Mare, and there is ample parking on site.

How much of the money goes to the hospice?

Aerosuperbatics has been in the wing-walking business for 30 years and the company’s distinctive Boeing Stearman biplanes will be familiar to many in the Weston-super-Mare area as a result of their annual displays at the town’s air festival. The company, its pilots, aircraft and participants are all fully licensed and insured, and compliant with all Civil Aviation Authority legislation. Aerosuperbatics has a 100 per cent safety record throughout its three decades.

There is of course a cost to Weston Hospicecare of organising this event, but we have secured a good rate with Aerosuperbatics to ensure as much money as possible will go to help the charity’s work caring for people with life-limiting illnesses and supporting their families. If you reach the £500 minimum fundraising target, then 58 per cent of your money will be received by the hospice. If you are able to exceed that target, then every additional penny you raise will go direct to Weston Hospicecare. In other words… the more you raise, the more our patients will benefit.

Are there limitations on who can take part?Yes. You must be at least 18 years old, while those over 65 years of age are required to provide a doctor’s note (or complete a self-declaration) to confirm they are fit and able to complete the challenge. There are height and weight restrictions too, for safety reasons. Participants cannot be taller than 6ft 1in, and must weigh no more than 13.5 stone. You must also be physically fit enough to climb into position atop the aircraft.

Can I bring along friends and family to watch?Absolutely! We will have exclusive use of the airfield on the day, and you are welcome to bring along whoever you would like to support you.

Do I get a souvenir of the day?Yes. We’ll have a photographer on site throughout the day, and each of our wing-walkers will receive a framed photograph and certificate as a memento of their achievement. Friends and family are of course also welcome to take photographs or film footage, and chest-worn Go-Pro cameras can be worn during your flight, subject to pilot approval. Aerosuperbatics also has a fixed camera on board the aircraft, and footage of your experience will be available to purchase.

What else do I need to know?We think we have covered the key details, but all other information from Aerosuperbatics – ranging from what to wear and weather restrictions to information about the aircraft and insurance details – can be found in the attached documents.

I want to sign up! What do I do now?

That’s great news – we’re thrilled to have you on board. You can secure your place immediately by completing the attached registration form and paying your £150 registration fee, and then you’re free to begin fundraising. You can pay by cheque (made payable to Weston Hospicecare and sent to Weston Hospicecare, 28 Thornbury Road, Uphill, Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, BS23 4YQ) or by card, using the attached form. Forms can be returned via post, or emailed to [email protected] Full terms and conditions for the experience are attached for your reference, but these are for information purposes only at this stage - Aerosuperbatics will, however, require these forms to be completed at the airfield on the day. Finally, please remember that the hospice team will be on hand to help in any way we can between now and June 21, so if you need fundraising advice, posters, sponsor forms or something else, then please don’t hesitate to ask. Welcome aboard - we look forward to meeting you, and hope you have a fabulous day during your wing-walking experience. Your support for Weston Hospicecare is appreciated by us all.
