PHYLLIS MALEY:

Phyllis Maley is a native of Columbia, TN.

She has served this congregation as Church Administrator for the past seventeen years. She and husband, Dr. Bruce Maley have been members of this congregation since 1978.

Phyllis discovered early on that she possessed a gift for accounting and all things financial. As a stay-at-home mom, she worked to complete her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Union University (1992). For several years following, she worked in public accounting. Through a series of coincidences, she was encouraged to apply for the open position at Jackson First UMC during the time when Dr. Paul Clayton was the Senior Pastor.

Phyllis has brought to this work a very grounded sense of good business practices and has enabled the overall work of the ministry by attending to those issues for which she is so naturally gifted. Just as a pastor may have gifts for caring or for preaching, Phyllis has exercised exceptional gifts in “ordering the life” of this congregation.

Phyllis plans to continue working three days a week and will now limit her role to that of financial administrator.

The Maley’s have two grown children: Chris (LeeAnn) reside in Mt. Juliet, TN. Grandson: 3-year old, Alex. Daughter, Melissa (Andy) live in Lawrence, Kansas. Grandchildren: Jackson (8) and Mimi (5).

Plans include: More time for domestic activities such as cooking, reading, being a “home-body,” visiting grandchildren, her mother, brother and sister.

Reflecting on her seventeen years in the “corner office,” Phyllis offers this thought: “I have gained more than I have given. I truly value and cherish the many rich associations and relationships with pastors, colleagues and members which have grown over these seventeen years.”

JIM WEAVER:

Jim Weaver has been married to the former Barbara Rhodes for 32 years and is a native of Madison County (Forked Deer River Bottom area). Jim was a member, growing up, of Big Springs United Methodist Church located at the Hardeman/Chester County line. He and Barbara are long-term members of this congregation and devoted members of the Dick Nunn Sunday School class.

Jim grew up in a farming family and learned early to plow a mule, later to drive a tractor and perform general farm-related activities. Jim graduated from Southside Jackson High School in 1961.

Jim’s early work years included a variety of jobs: working at a Shell service station, building Jim Walter homes, parts delivery for Motor Parts and Bearings, Mechanic at Les Reinke Buick and GMC, Lineman at Jackson Electric Department.

He also served in the National Guard-- active duty in the mid—60s. Upon completing his service in the Guard, Jim joined Southern Bell Telephone Company and retired after 25 years of service as an Engineer. After this first official retirement, Jim joined the staff of the University School of Jackson (USJ) where he completed eleven more years of service in maintenance.

For the last ten years, Jim has given so completely of himself that no task has been beneath him. He has given untold hours to the ministries of Jackson FUMC and certainly Barbara has been incredibly supportive and patient with Jim’s often demanding work schedule.

Jim’s future plans: continuing to work at the church three days a week, remodeling and building homes and pursuing his great love of American history. Jim comments on his time at Jackson FUMC: “This has been my ministry. The fellowship, camaraderie and the great sense of accomplishment have been rewards in and of themselves. Just being a part of what has been done here is satisfaction enough.”

The Weaver’s have two children: Son, James (Kelley) Grandson: Jake (8) live nearby on the family farm. Daughter, Sarah, resides in Nashville.

WITH GRATITUDE AND APPRECIATIONOn December 9th, Phyllis Maley and Jim Weaver were honored for their faithfulness to Christ and to this congregation for their many years of full-time employment at FUMC.

“Too many people grow up. That's the real trouble with the world... They don't remember what it's like to be twelve years old.” ~ Walt Disney

“For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than live in the tents of wickedness.” ~ Psalm 84:10

STAFF NEWSNew faces? Same faces, new locations? Perhaps you’ve noticed some changes lately. Much thought, discernment and prayer has been given on how to best organize our staff for greater effectiveness using their gifts and talents. The following changes have been implemented with the approval of your Staff Parish Committee. You’re encouraged to get to know your staff more fully as you read about each.

DOWNTOWN JACKSON

Tricia Odom, moving from the role of Ministerial Assistant, is now Operations Manager. Her responsibilities include overseeing the custodial staff, catering staff and the weekday and weekend safety staffs. Tricia will work closely with all of you on issues of hospitality, safety, and details related to the proper functioning of our physical facilities.

Tricia was born and raised in Jackson and in FUMC. She is the daughter of long time member Grailyn Brooks. She has one older brother Berry and a younger sister Susan, all of whom grew up in this church. Tricia is a graduate of Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi and called that state home for over 20 years. She has also been a resident of Monroe, Louisiana for 6 years.

Tricia’s background is healthcare marketing serving primarily as marketing director of several Mississippi and Louisiana hospitals. She also has worked as a marketing liaison both in home health care and hospice.

Her church related work includes serving as Parish Administrator of The Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Greenwood, Mississippi and serving on the Vestry of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Monroe, Louisiana. Prior to joining the staff at FUMC she worked in the Development Office at Lambuth University.

She is married to Clift Odom from Vicksburg, Mississippi and, between both, they have 5 grown children (3 boys and 2 girls) and 4 grandchildren. Her daughter Jennifer is a graduate of Johnson and Wales Culinary School in Denver, where she lives with her husband and two children and daughter Amanda resides in Carrollton, Mississippi with her husband and two children and is an RN working for Continue Care Home Health as Director of Nursing.

Bobbie Mays, Director of Communications, keeps everyone informed of “what’s happening at FUMC!” When joining the staff part-time as Communications Coordinator in June, 2007, her main responsibilities included overseeing the website, print publications, signage and advertising with the Communications Assistant, Adam Anderson. As communication needs expanded, other areas were explored with the Sunday Sermons DVD ministry for those unable to attend church, digital photography, weekly church wide e-mails and social media.

In November, 2012, Bobbie’s position as Director of Communications became full-time for both internal and external communications. Additional responsibilities include oversight of special event planning and building usage working with Sheila Emerson, Front Office Coordinator and Pam Jaco, Director of Evangelism and Older Adults.

Bobbie, a native of Kentucky, graduated from the University of Kentucky with a BA in Speech and Hearing and Elementary Education. Prior to moving to TN, she lived in Ashland, KY with her husband, John, where she was a community leader, chairing events and fundraisers for non-profits and actively involved in church. In 2005, after John retired from a 32 year banking career, they moved to their farm in Chester County. In 2006, Bobbie and John joined Jackson FUMC soon becoming members of the Family Life Forum Sunday School class and participating in Bible studies along with other committees.

They have two married daughters and four grandchildren. Daughter, Emily and her husband Keith Watson live in Huntington WV where he is a radiologist and she enjoys being a mom to Ella (age 3) and Annie (age 1) plus working part-time as a Physician Assistant. Daughter Sarah and her husband, Jeremy Hessel, live in the Cincinnati area where he is Director of Environmental Health for the Hamilton Co. Health Department and Sarah is Grants and Fellowship Coordinator at Ethicon Surgical Care. They are the parents of Reed ( age 3) and Molly( age 6 mos.) Pat Goodpaster, Bobbie’s mother moved to Jackson in 2009 to be near her family. She is a resident of Morningside and an active member of FUMC.

“Being a part of FUMC not only as a staff member but as committed church members has greatly enriched our lives instilling in us an even greater purpose for serving others through Christ.”

Glynn Graves, recently retired from King Technologies, will become our part-time Weekend Custodian at FUMC effective January 1, 2013. Glynn has worked in the electronics and telecommunications industry for 20 years. He has extensive experience in safety and Quality Control inspections, refurbishing telephone equipment and warranty repair. Born and raised in Medina, TN, “when the cotton patches were there, not the new homes now,” he graduated in 1966 from high school. Afterward, he was drafted into the service, joining the US Air Force, where he completed technical school. His responsibilities for his 18 month assignment on the island of Okinawa was in telecommunications. He is also a graduate of Jackson State Community College. Glynn has been married to the former Sally Alexander since 1990. Together, they love caring for animals of all kinds, especially rescue animals. In 2011, they joined FUMC where they are actively involved in Sunday School. Sally sings in the Sanctuary choir and Glynn helps as a volunteer kitchen helper. Since the age of 6, Glynn has been an avid St. Louis Cards “sports nut!” He has a passion for reading, just completing his goal this year, of reading the entire Bible. With a love of Christ, his hope for the future is his desire to serve others.

Cathy Benson, effective January 1, joins FUMC as an alternate Weekend Custodian. She works full time at West TN Ear, Nose and Throat where she has worked 21 years running the Data Process Department (in fact, she is the Department!) Cathy’s three children are Conlee, who is a senior in high school; Reed, who attends Nashville School of Law and Ryan who works at JEA and is married with two children. Cathy, who joined FUMC in March, 2008, is a Stephen Minister and actively participates in the Genesis Sunday School class and as well as other ministries. One of her greatest joys is her grandchildren. Cathy also enjoys music, old movies, tending to her plants and flowers, spending quiet time walking outdoors and being with family.

Sheila Emerson comes to FUMC as the Front Office Coordinator, responsible for scheduling of activities, keeping the calendar updated, membership and record keeping, ensuring the evangelism process, as well as general office duties. She has worked for several years in non-profit organizations having served for the past seven years as the Administrative Assistant at Agape Child and Family Services in Jackson. Sheila is married to Minister Theo Emerson, and they reside in Medina, TN. Sheila and Theo fellowship at the Miracle Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Humboldt, TN under the leadership of Apostle Eddie Emerson. She is also a student at Bethel College where she is currently pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice. Some of Sheila’s hobbies are spending quality time with family and horseback riding.

Jan Kelley, is now Ministerial Assistant to all the pastors and to the Minister of Music and Worship Arts. Her responsibilities include pastoral scheduling, follow ups on pastoral issues, working with volunteer church receptionists, coordinating monthly worship service communion servers, home communion delivery and committee scheduling. For the past two years, Jan has served as Administrative Assistant. Born in Birmingham, AL, Jan moved to Memphis at age 9 and graduated from University of Memphis with a degree in Business Administration. Her previous employment included nine years at Lambuth University in the School of Education, Director of the Mother’s Day Program at Grace United Methodist Church in Jackson, TN and working at St. Jude’s Hospital in Memphis. She is married to Mike Kelley. They have a daughter, Shannon, who is a senior at Madison Academic Magnet School. Their oldest daughter, Morgan, died during heart surgery in December, 2009, at the age of 21. Faith and love of their church at Grace UMC have been central to Jan’s life and that of her family. Jan sings in her church choir, is an active volunteer in their youth program and enjoys cooking and gardening.

We also welcome Carl Fuller who will become the Weeknight Safety replacement for Thomas Fuller who is retiring December 27th. Carl, who works as a school crossing guard at Isaac Lane during the day, looks forward to his new part-time evening hours.

Ask a PastorHave questions about God, Church, or life and want a safe place to discuss and explore with others? New to United Methodism or Christianity and want to talk over some of the basics? Come to the five week “Ask A Pastor” class. Each week you’ll have the opportunity to submit questions about God and the life of faith that a pastor (usually David Hollis) will lead the group in exploring. We will plan to discuss at least three questions per session. All discussions will be open so that you can attend any session you’d like.
