What is It?

Okay, if you don't know this is a beer bottle you're thrown out of the guys club so the real questions are, when did Corona produce these and what other boxers are included? Lots of you ask about the cheap-er stuff and more recent stuff. I saw this on eBay. Stands to reason these will be fairly scarce in the future. Eric "El Terrible" Mo-rales never looked better, incidentally.

If you watch a lot of boxing I’ll bet you are like me and assumed that Compubox and Punchstat just came along with the digital age and that’s true since they do use a computer program and started in 1985. But before them, long before them, there was James Connors of Buffalo, NY.

Connors was “Professor” James Connors of the Buffalo Athletic Club. The “Professor” title in an A.C. was usually given to instructors. Mike Donovan of the NYAC was so titled. But this Professor was also likely the same James Connor who lost by KO to the Belfast Spider, Ike Weir, in 1890.

But perhaps Connors would not be known as well for what he did inside the ring as for what he did at ringside in some of the most memorable fights at the end of the last century. What Connors did was record every punch landed in the fight and also report a fairly detailed summary of each round. He then went back to Buffalo and published them in a program type magazine, complete with local ads by Buffalo businesses.

I recently purchased one of these and have been sent a cover image of another from Clay Moyle. The contents of the one I have, published in 1897, is certainly remarkable. As you may have noticed on the cover of this BCN, this publication gives a round by round report of Sullivan-Corbett, Corbett-Fitzsimmons and Corbett-Mitchell. It also gives round summaries only of Fitzsimmons-Hall and Fitzsimmons-Maher. Just to attend all those fights must have been mind-blowing.

And as the illustrations here illustrate, Con-nors didn’t just record the punches that landed (dots and stars) but the “vicious punches deliv-ered and missed” (arrows).

So punchstat has a computer and two guys with buttons to push, what did Connors have? The answer can be found in the illustration on the cover and shown above. Drawn there at ringside is a man who is hard at work making marks on two large silhouettes of the fighters. That is obvi-ously our author toiling away.

The contents of this publication are incred-ible but as a collectible itself it is also remarkable. The cover is in full color. I’ll put this on the web-site so you can see how brilliant the colors are.

Now consider the rarity. It was published in Buffalo, NY and barring a warehouse find, it has to be rare. If it were published in NYC or San Francisco we might have seen more of these.

I have included here some last rounds as examples of what is contained therein.

Reading this publication I just kept saying to myself, “How cool is this?”

If any of you loyal readers have any other publications from Connors or any other punch records, let us know and we’ll publish the info. Seems like a pretty long between punchstats.

He Recorded Every Punch!

Shown above is the last round of the Carson City fight in which Fitz won the title with the "solar plexus punch." Note that prior to the knockout, neither man had been going to the body in this round with Fitz landing six punches to the face including two significant punches (stars). That will bring your guard up!

Look at the amount of head shots Sullivan took in the last round. Sullivan failed to even score. Considering that this fight was not filmed, this is the best record of this historic fight we have. One account at the time said Connors took a Tiffany lamp to the Olympic Athletic Club in New Orleans as a gift from the Buffalo A.C. Probably assured him good seat. John Gay should try that when taking magazines to guys doesn't work.

No one expects that Connors would get every punch right but consider that at least he had no dog in any of these fights as far as we can tell and, as a pro himself, he knew a punch when he saw it. He also refereed some fights. Here he shows graphically what others have described, Mitchell swings wildly and Corbett turns out the lights.

Siki Dines and Signs

Several months ago I did an article on Battling Siki and later uncovered a supposed Siki signature. That signature was only the fifth I had seen and two of those were facsimiles. Now there is this. What we have here is the dinner menu that Mike McTigue and Silki were invited to after their battle in which Siki lost the championship in Dublin on St. Pat-rick’s Day, 1923. Note Carpentier was there as well and signed the piece making the piece signed by three succeeding light heavyweight champions.

Here it is alongside the cut signature I reported earlier, the facsimiles and one other published example. These would likely just verify each other, wouldn’t they?

Connors? So is this James Connors? I've had this

cabinet for years. On the back is written "James Conners." Looks like about the right size fellow.

We always perk up a little when we see the ad for a boxing premium because cataloging these sorts of things is what we do, isn't it? Here's a match-up of an ad we pulled off ebay and a premium we've had for years.

Save your Quaker Crackles box tops and you could get a measuring tape, a wrist band, two different kinds of muscle builders OR a photo of Max himself with facsimile signature. But the longer you look at the photo on the left below you wonder who that guy is. I mean he clearly has a Max Baer head but look at that body. Baer was a pretty muscular guy but doesn't that look like a photoshop job? Look at the real Baer photo I lifted from the current RMY auction on the right. They didn't have photoshop in those days but they could do this cut-and-paste. I'd have gone for the leather wrist band which also only cost you one boxtop.

Baer-ly a Premium
