THOSE WHO SERVE From the Pastor
In Mark 12:29-31 Jesus says “…you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul
and with all your strength….and your neighbor as yourself.” We call this the Great Commandment be-
cause Jesus added “There is no other commandment greater than these.”
In Matthew 28:19-20 Jesus said, “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit and teach them to observe everything I have commanded
you and lo, I will be with you always even to the end of the age.” This is known as the Great Commis-
sion.
These words of Jesus make clear our mission and calling. We are to go make disciples, love God and
love others. In the process we hope the church will grow like she did in the book of Acts when Luke
said in Acts 2:47, “And every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.”
Our mission is to believe in Jesus Christ as Lord, to receive the power of the Holy Spirit and to respond
to the needs of others with the love of God the Father.
I envision the church being a growing community of faithful disciples of Jesus Christ who are transform-
ing the community and the world.
I believe all Christians are ministers and are called to serve God and others and proclaim the grace of
Jesus Christ in both word and deed.
Last Sunday I pointed out that the longer one is a Christian, the fewer non-Christians one is in relation-
ship with. It behooves us to ask God to bring us across the path of a non-Christian that we can pray for,
love, support, encourage, listen to and when we’ve earned the right, to be able to share our faith and
invite the person to experience some aspect of our faith community.
I hope in this young year you will identify, pray for and invite friends, relatives, neighbors and associ-
ates to participate in one of our opportunities for service, spiritual growth or worship. We have so
many wonderful ministries that are available and they are to be shared.
Someone has said “ministry is the overflow of the inner life.” To help us deepen our inner life I am be-
ginning a series of messages entitled “Pathways of Spiritual Growth.” We will take a look at various
spiritual disciplines or means of grace as meditation, prayer, fasting, study, simplicity, solitude, submis-
sion, service, worship, guidance and celebration. Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster will be an
important source of information. I hope to see you soon and often as we seek to fulfill our mission and
vision. Pastor Glenn

United Methodist Youth Fellowship February 17, is National Random Acts of Kindness Day! The A.R.K. group
of our Evangelism Committee is asking everyone in our church to consider
doing an act, or several “Acts of Random Kindness” on this day, in partic-
ular. Of course we, as Christians need to mindful of opportunities to do
this every day, but on this day let us try to focus on doing good deeds that
are unexpected and extended to people we find along our path that day,
whether we know them or not. The A.R.K. people will hand out sugges-
tions and A.R.K. calling cards at the end of both services on Sunday, 2/12.
You may leave a card along with your act of kindness, or perform it anonymously, if you choose.
Please join us in making an effort to extend a kindness to someone or several people that day. If 300
of us perform 3 acts of kindness, 900 lives will be touched! If those kindnesses are “paid forward,”
we have no idea how many will be touched. We should always remember the positive impact we

Miracles Keep on Growing!
John Sykes, our trusted gardener and friend came down to the Clement garden on January 18th and helped Beth Dixon and Diane learn how to properly trim and transplant blackberry bushes. He showed us some wonderful tips to keeping them looking pretty and producing more! He also showed us how to keep them low enough so little hands will be able to reach them. Thank you so very much John for all of your help and wise advice.
While Dave and Diane’s oldest daughter Wendy and her family were visiting from Germany over the holi-days, Wendy helped Alice Hanes update our face book page and has offered to help with this very vital information center from Germany! Isn’t that amazing? Please check us out! Go to “Deep Roots Mocks-ville” . We will post pictures, videos, important dates and other garden related information there. Thank you Wendy!
Lowes Heroes have once again stepped in to help us with yet another project! We are planning to put little stakes up around each garden bed for bird wiring to help in keeping away the critters. Lowes donated pal-let spacers to us (enough to last us a good long time) for this project. They also donated 12 X 12 brick walk-way steps for us to start a pathway to the Clement garden gate. Thank you so much Lowes!
Joe Harris, owner of the land where our Clement garden is located, has graciously allowed us to hook up to his electricity so that we may provide electric pumps for our water barrels, thus making our water flow much more efficiently! Thank you Mr. Harris!
Thank you all for your support and help every step of the way!

THE HEALTHY DAVIE CHALLENGE is an initia-tive which includes encouraging Davie County residents to improve their health. FUMC is participating in this challenge by encouraging its own members to join the challenge. The goal for the county-wide initiative is to walk ONE BILLION steps in 100 days (until April 30). We encourage you to help meet this goal by wearing a pedometer and recording your steps. After you sign up for the FUMC Team you will be given a free pedometer and T-shirt. All that is needed after that is for you to report your steps weekly which may be done by email, phone or put a sheet of paper in the offering plate at church with your name, date and num-ber of steps walked for the week. Steps are being collected by Kristen Paterson, 336.936.9502 or [email protected]. Dave Salmon invites you to meet every Satur-day morning at 8 AM at the Davie YMCA park-ing lot to join in a Walk/Jog group. You will have a choice to use the greenway, walk around town, etc. Your steps will count toward the Healthy Davie Challenge of 1 BILLION steps by April 30, 2017. Water provided.
