As part of the one body of Christ we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.” FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH, OWENSBORO (Disciples of Christ) THE CALLER No. 16 Vol. 14 ~ August 21, 2018 From the Preacherman…. You have to take time for the pain. James Forbes, pastor of the Riverside Church in New York, said those words in a sermon I heard in seminary nearly thirty years ago. I did not know then just how deeply important those words would be in my life. How could I have known in my early 20’s? And yet, of the thousands of sermons I have preached or heard, those words still ring in the depths of my soul. You have to take time for the pain. Forbes was preaching that day from Romans 8, with a particular interest in verse 26: “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.” How did the apostle Paul know, how did Forbes know, that there would be times in my life in which I could not articulate the pain in my soul? I could only weep or moan or feel my whole body heave with sobs and tears. How could they know, unless of course, they had been there first, and found words to explain what had been discovered. You have to take time for the pain. That very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. On the basis of these simple truths is a foundation for much in my ministry. Grief takes time, will have its own way and take its own path, and we ignore it at our peril. Many of our struggles come from trying to rush grief, to make things seem better before they really are. After nearly a quarter of a century of being a pastor, I can honestly say that much of my ministry is just encouraging people to take time for the pain, pain that often arises in sighs too deep for words. When that grief is expressed, room is cleared in our souls, room to breathe and live and create and love. So I sit and listen and pray and point towards the hope that is ours in Jesus of Nazareth, one who followed this same path of grief, even unto death, because on the far shore of the sea is Hope. What is your grief? What have you kept hidden away for years, even decades, thinking that the loss or pain or failure makes you unworthy and unloved? People here will listen, and even weep with you. We believe, come what may, that in the far county is something astounding and astonishing, something ineffable, but hopeful. Grieving well is a gift from God for all of us to share. Take time for the pain. Or it will take time for you. Peace….Chris
