Killing the Plants

That year I discovered the virtues

of plants as companions: they don’t

argue, they don’t ask for much,

they don’t stay out until 3:00 A.M., then

lie to you about where they’ve been . . . .

I can’t summon the ambition

to repot this grape ivy, or this sad

old cactus, or even to move them out

onto the porch for the summer,

where their lives would certainly improve. I give them

a grudging dash of water -- that’s all

they get. I wonder if they suspect

that like Hamlet I rehearse murder

all hours of the day and night,

considering the town dump

and compost pile as possible graves . . . .

The truth is that if I permit them

to live, they will go on giving

alms to the poor: sweet air, miraculous

flowers, the example of persistence.

DAYTIME CIRCLE will meet on Tues, May

together. A light lunch and treats will be

served! And all are welcome!

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread,

tation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and

the glory forever. ~ Amen.

WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS Jeff Leavell

PRELUDE “Andante sostenuto” by K. H. Zollner

Alejandro Alumbreros

One: The Lord be with you.

All: And also with you.

*CALL TO WORSHIP

One: God calls us by name and gathers us from east and west, and north and south

to be, together, a holy people, God’s own beloved.

All: Praise to God our creator who has brought us here

to worship, to feast, to serve, and to be renewed.

*OPENING HYMN “Live Into Hope” [332]

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

the fearful find a friend.

All: In you, the wounded find a healer, the penitent find a pardoner,

the burdened find a counselor.

One: In you, the miserly find a beggar, the despondent find a laughter-maker,

the legalists find a rule-breaker.

All: In you, Jesus Christ, we meet our Maker, and our match.

One: If some now need to say, “Help me,” if some need to say, “Save me,”

if some need to say, “Hold me,” if some need to say, “Forgive me,”

then let these be said now in confidence by us.

(Let us continue to pray in silence.)

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

One: Hear the good news!

Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation.

The old life has gone; a new life has begun.

Know that you are forgiven and be at peace.

Know that the Spirit of the risen Christ inspirits you and rejoice.

All: Thanks be to God. Alleluia! Amen!

*PASSING THE PEACE

One: Since God has made us the blessed community, the Church,

Peace and joy be with you.

All: And also with you.
