Fire Station No.2 (Bayside)
1595PacificHighway
SanDiego. California 92101
Owner: Redevelopment Agency of the City of San Diego
History: Our first com m unity m ee ting was held in the Firehouse Museum . This be cam e one of the m ost important events in our pre lim inary research.
We becam e quite enamored with m any of the ob je c ts in that m useum . The fac t that each ob je c t was com ple te ly purpose built for fighting fires m eant
that m any of those ob je c ts be cam e iconic . From axes, to ladders, to he lm ets, but most interesting to us were the cast ob je c ts, fire monitors and fire
plugs, the m useum displays the original molds for making the sand cast for the hydrants. Another realization that we came to appre c iate was how
that fire engine red and the gold leaf filigree that adorns the sides of the engines c onne c ts so deeply to our recognition of fire service .
Architecture: We have responded strongly to the idea of the ruin put forth by Rob Q uigley as a conceptual corne rstone to their building design. The
idea that a County Administration Building-esque fac;;ade has be c om e a ruin that this new modern, almost m echanical building is growing out of has
be c om e the root of our design as well. We anchor our piece with a seem ing block of that fac;;ade as it has "c rum b led" off the northw e st corner of the
building. Tying bac k to the idea of grow th the building has gone through m any different permutations of green walls, roofs and screens and in each of
these there has been mention made of trumpet vines. This idea of overtaking the surface of our ruin block with a sculptural element that is c raw ling
over or enve loping the ruin in a m anner of organic grow th be cam e another key point in our design.
Community: In our first com m unity m ee ting there was a great deal of concern for the sound generated by the sirens and such of the fire equipm ent.
It seem ed incongruous to want to m itigate a sound that is intentionally loud. It also occurred to us that a siren m aybe the most beautiful sound you've
heard if it is your house on fire. We also had the opportunity to tour a couple of the stations and in doing so w e focused on what seem ed to b e one of
the few areas of the station that was allowed to be m essy and emotional. Each station had a large c ork -b oard that was full of drawings and cards and
rem em brances. We opened one innocuous looking card and read a sim ple sentim ent inside it stated "Thank you for saving my life." This m om ent
coupled with the com m unitie s conc e rn about noise has led us to include a sound e lem ent in the pie c e that will be a com position scored to find
resolution in the noise of a fire call and busy Pacific Coast Highway, and engage the viewers and com m unity m em be rs in a m ore intimate and
emotional way.
Parallels: We are playing off visual paralle ls be tween fire hardware, (hoses, monitors and nozzles,) vines (the proposed trumpet vines,) and brass
victrola resonating horns (as inspired by the inclusion of a sound elem ent.) We are also using the idea of the filigree to b ridge the gaps be tween
hardware and organic grow th, be tween fire and water, be tween sound and substance , be tween decoration and function and be tween 2 and 3
dimensional e lem ents. We are working to create an integrated piece of artwork that inc ludes and resolves the many diffe rent points of interest in this
project, and in turn creates a rich and layered experience for the viewer.
