Measuring Guide

PREMIER MANTELS MEASURING GUIDE
Ordering your wood Premier Mantel is easy when you follow the instructions below. You will need to provide three important mantel
dimensions. The mantel Opening Width “C”, mantel Opening Height “B”, and mantel Return Depth (space behind mantel) “G”.
Once you have determined these three dimensions, compare your needs to the stock sizes listed near each model within this catalog.
NOTE: The mantels are designed to overlap the facing material (Tile, Slate, Marble). If your “C” and “B” dimensions are determined to be
no more than 8” smaller than the stock size showing for the mantel of your choice, the stock size will fit if you do not mind the excess
facing material not being seen. It will simply be hidden by the mantel.
CUSTOM MANTEL MEASURING
To insure the proper fit of your custom mantel use the following guidelines to measure your mantel:
DETERMINING THE MANTEL OPENING HEIGHT “B”
The Opening Height of the mantel of “B” dimension is determined by measuring the Height of the fireplace facing material and
subtracting 1/2 inch from the Height to allow the mantel to overlap the facing material. See FIG. 1.
DETERMINING THE MANTEL OPENING WIDTH “C”
To determine the Opening Width of the mantel “C”, measure the Width of the facing materials and subract one inch. This allows the
mantel to overlap the facing material 1/2 on each side. You can overlap the facing material up to one inch less than the Width of the
mantel leg if needed. See FIG. 1.
DETERMINING THE MANTEL RETURN DEPTH “G”
All fireplaces have a front or face made of non-combustible material such as brick, tile, marble or slate. This facing material may be
installed flush with the wall of the fireplace or it may protrude in front of the fireplace wall. The distance the facing material sticks out in
front of the wall is used to calculate the mantel Return Depth “G” measurement. See FIG. 1. Calculate the “G” measurement by adding
1/4 inch to the thickness of the facing material protrusion. Ex. If you are installing the mantel over 3/4 inch thick marble, you should
specify a Return Depth “G” of 1” (marble thickness 3/4 inch + 1/4 inch = 1 inch). See FIG. 1.
READY TO ORDER
Once you determine your mantel Opening Height “B”, mantel Opening Width “C”, and mantel Return Depth “G” you can calculate all
remaining mantel measurements using the standard dimensions found near each model within this catalog. This is important as you
should always check to make sure that the overall length (Shelf Length “D”) and outside leg to outside leg distance (Body Width “E”) fit
your situation. Important: Make sure your Shelf Length “D” allows you to install your mantel within windows and doors etc. Make sure your
Body Width “E” is smaller than your hearth length so that your mantel legs do not hang off a raised hearth. See FIG. 1. Calculate these
measurements by using the table below once you have determined your “C” dimension.
CALCULATING CUSTOM MANTEL DIMENSIONS
When you customize your mantel Opening, you also change the Overall Shelf Length “D”, Body Width “E”, and Overall Mantel Height “A”.
See FIG. 2. Use the following formulas to determine these sizes: Overall Shelf Length “D”=2Y+C, Body Width “E”=2X+C, Overall Mantel
Height “A”=B+Z.
Stained mantels are prefinished using Min-Wax® Stain and Clear Top Coat.
