INTRODUCTION
The Fire Research Information Services (FRIS) startedin 1971. It is a broad-based collection of over 25,000 fireresearch items, emphasizing the national and internationalreport literature, geared toward the programmatic needs ofthe Center for Fire Research. FIREDOC is the on-linebibliographic database of this collection.
The FIREDOC Vocabulary List has been developed over a
number of years. It reflects the FRIS holdings and thekeywords are geared towards the needs of the users of thiscollection. The vocabulary was originally used to develop a
small fire safety database for NASA/ASRDI (Aerospace SafetyResearch and Data Institute) . A vocabulary list is achanging document, reflecting new research interests at thenational and international level. The printed version isintended to be useful for searching and classificationpurposes, but it will not necessarily be identical with thecomputerized version of the FIREDOC vocabulary. Thecomputerized version will constantly grow to reflectadditions to the collection.
To assist you in using the List, we have expanded uponthe symbol notations and chemical compounds. If you have anycomments about the content or philosophy of the List, pleasecontact the author.
SYMBOL NOTATION
The symbols which precede some ofthe words mean;
*USE = The user is referred to the preferredterm indicated. The keyword which isasterisked (*) is NOT a recommended keyword.
UF = Used For. The descriptor at the mainentry is to be used for any keyword listedbelow this notation.
# = refer to the generic term. If appropriate,use a more specific keyword. However, thekeyword may be used ifit is the best one for the document.
RT = refers to closely related keyword(s) whichare conceptually different.
SA = refers to keyword (s) which have a closerelationship to the main entry keyword.

BT = Broader Term. The keyword (s) representa generically broader class than themain keyword.
NT = Narrower Term. It is the reversemeaning of 'BT'.
All keywords are in natural language format. On occasion ithas been necessary to differentiate the subtle meanings of oneor more keywords. This has been accomplished by embedding adescriptive term in parentheses.
CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS
Use the standard (Chemical Abstracts) compound namewhen the name is 33 characters or less.
When there is a common abbreviation, enter theabbreviation but USE the full name.
Use an abbreviated form of a compound name that exceeds33 characters in length. If there is no standardabbreviation, submit the name to Chemical Abstracts whereone may be provided.
