INTRODUCTION
The Fire Research Information Services (FRIS) started in 1971. It is a
broad-based collection of over 25,000 fire research items, emphasizing thenational and international report literature, geared toward the programmaticneeds of the Center for Fire Research. FIREDOC is the on-line bibliographicdatabase of this collection.
The FIREDOC Vocabulary List is now in its second edition. It reflectsthe FRIS holdings and the keywords are geared towards the needs of the usersof this collection. The vocabulary was originally used to develop a smallfire safety database for NASA/ASRDI (Aerospace Safety Research and DataInstitute). A vocabulary list is a changing document, reflecting new researchinterests at the national and international levels. The printed version is
intended to be useful for computerized searching and classification purposes,but it will not necessarily be identical with the FIREDOC vocabulary. Thekeywords in the database always will reflect new additions to the collectionor shifts in the acceptance and/or usage of technical concepts
.
To assist in the use of the List, we have expanded upon the symbolnotations and chemical compounds. If you have any comments about the contentor philosophy of the List, please contact the author.
SYMBOL NOTATION
The symbols which precede some of the words mean:
USE - The user is referred to the preferred term indicated. Thekeyword with an asterisk (*) is NOT used.
UF — Used For. The term at the main entry is to be used for anykeyword listed below this notation.
# - refer to the generic term. If appropriate, use a morespecific keyword. However, the keyword may be used if it is
the best one for the document.
RT - Related Term. The listed keyword(s) are conceptuallydifferent.
SA - See Also. The listed keyword(s) bear a close relationshipto one another.
BT
NT
Broader Term. The keyword(s) represent a genericallybroader class than the main keyword.
Narrower Term. It is the reverse meaning of 'BT'.

CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS
Use the standard (Chemical Abstracts) compound name when the name is 33
characters or less
.
When there is a common abbreviation, enter the abbreviation but USE the
full name.
Use an abbreviated form of a compound name that exceeds 33 characters in
length. If there is no standard abbreviation, submit the name to ChemicalAbstracts where one may be provided.
