Fläkt Woods Limtied (FW) are the acknowledged leaders in the specialised world of airmovement technology.

Over 100 years experience in designing and manufacturing air movement equipment has kept FWin the forefront of innovation, enabling the company to maintain their leadership in a sophisticatedand competitive market.

This long experience and expertise forms the basis for the range of fans and roof extract unitsdesigned specifically for the control and ventilaiton of fire smoke.

Fläkt Woods Limited are a company committed to Quality Assurance.

Registration to BS EN ISO 9001.94 means that FW design is quality assured as well as themanufacture. The commitment to quality doesn't stop with the hardware. The performance datacomes from standard tests carried out in FW's own laboratory which is BSI and AMCA approved.Woods fans can be bought with the confidence that they will achieve the published performance dataand match the assured quality essential in FIRE SAFETY SYSTEMS.

Two main areas of fire safety are detailed within this publication.

VENTILATION is used mainly in buildings with large open areas - Shopping Malls, SportsCentres, Car Parks, Department Stores etc.Smoke Ventilation systems are designed to:-

ApplicationsThere are basically two methods of Fire Smoke Control which utilise fans and fan equipment - PRESSURISATIONand VENTILATION.In any building fire smoke can be the major killer, and hence reliable smoke control systems can act both to save livesand assist fire fighting. Woods Fire Safety Fans are designed and tested for use in smoke control systems.

Pressurisation

Woods offer fans from their JM Aerofoil/Varofoil ranges for use on pressurisation supply systems, andtheir H.T. Series Bifurcated for Exhaust Systems, supported by Woods Technical Paper ref WTP41 - FansIn Fire Safety- Smoke Control By Pressurisation.

PRESSURISATION is often the preferred method ofsmoke control in buildings where the staircases, liftlobbies and corridors form part of the escape routes.i.e. high rise buildings with multiple occupants, Ho-tels, Offices and Residential Flats.Smoke Control using pressure differential is basedon two simple principles:-

Airflow can control smoke movement if the average VELOCITY is of sufficient magnitude

A PRESSURE differential across a barrier can act to control smoke movement.

These two principles form the basis for the designof pressurisation systems to control smoke move-ment, the details of which are outlined in the FireSafety in Buildings- Codes of Practice - BS5588 Parts 4 and 5.

Smoke Control by VENTILATION

Ventilation

Smoke Ventilation fans are required to exhaust the hot fire smoke away from the building for givenperiods of time. Woods H.T. and JM H.T. Series smoke venting fans and roof extract units achievethis using simple designs and well proven components.

The application of the H.T. fan ranges are supported by two Woods Fans In Fire Safety technicalpapers ref WTP20 - Fans For Fire Smoke Venting and WTP 39 Regulations, Codes of Practice,System Reliability.

All H.T. Series fans and roof extract units are suitable for continuous operation at temperatures up to 50°Cmaximum and can therefore be used to provide the normal ventilation requirements of the building.

Keep the hot smoke above the escapingocccupant. Assist the fire brigade in fighting fire.Minimise damage to buildings and contents.Clear the residue smoke after fire has been extinguished.

Exhaust Fans - H.T. SeriesMost Woods H.T. Series Bifurcated fans areindependently tested and certified by T.U. -Munich to handle 600°C for 90 minutes - categoryG of BS7346 Part 2. This rating is above thatrecommended by most codes of practice. For additional information please refer to sectionon smoke venting equipment in this publication.

Pressure Relief CowlsWoods Pressure Relief Cowls provide aconvenient unobtrusive method of bleeding theexcess air from the staircase, necessary tomaintain 50 Pa with all doors closed. Based onthe Woods Colchester Range of roof extractunits, they are roof top mounted and generallyout of sight.

Supply Fans - JM Aerofoils

Woods new JM Aerofoil fans meet all the re-quirements of Pressurisation Supply fans iden-tified in WTP41.

JM Aerofoils develop up to 15% more pressurethan more traditional aerofoil sections providingimproved stability and steeper performancecurves.(see opposite).

Blade pitch angles of JM Aerofoil fans can be sim-ply adjusted on site, allowing the air duty to bematched to site conditions (within motor limita-tions).

JM Aerofoils are lightweight. Their impellersare electronically balanced allowing their instal-lation into most structures.

This catalogue details only a small selectionfrom the JM Aerofoil range chosen to meetmost Pressurisation Supply fan duties. For fullproduct specification and performance see pub-lications C22a and C23a.

Supply Fans - Varofoil

Woods Varofoil - Variable Pitch in Motion fans areavailable to provide the supply air for a pressuri-sation system. The performance of the fan canbe automatically adjusted to match the require-ments of the system thereby reducing the size ofpressure relief dampers.Publication VF2010 details full information onWoods Varofoil range.

Supply Fans - standby

Fans can be mounted in either Series orParallel to provide 100% standby. Please consultWoods technical staff for advice on selection.

Woods of Colchester Limited, have made Aerofoil fans suit-able for continuous operationin high temperature air streamsfor over 25 years. These fansare currently fitted into DryingMachines, and Smoke Ventingsystems, all over the world.

This long experience forms thebasis for the new range of H.T.SERIES fans and roof extractunits designed specifically forFire Smoke Ventilation.

Woods manufactures fan mo-tors, and is therefore able tolook critically at the require-ments of motor insulation, bear-

ings and lubricants which arevital elements in achieving hightemperature performance. Ex-tensive stress tests on fanimpellers for operation at hightemperatures has enabledWoods to make the best use ofexisting designs and materials.

A full high temperature test pro-gramme has been successfullycompleted. Some of these testswere carried out at independ-ent laboratories.

These tests, combined withWoods’ renowned high stand-ard of engineering and qualityassurance, serve to support

the H.T. Series specification.

Extensive market research hasresulted in the H.T. Series be-ing offered in six temperature/time categories. This addedflexibility enables a fan, or roofextract unit, to be selected tomatch the requirements of thesystem, ensuring the most costeffective installation.

The equipment detailed in thispublication is not the full rangeof items available. If the re-quirement is not included pleaseenquire to head office.

Quality is assured at Woods. The H.T.SERIES is no e xception, thecompliance of Woods to BSEN ISO 9001.94 the inter nationalstandard f or Quality Assur anceconfirms this.

H.T. Series fans and roof extract unitshave successfully completed anextensive prog ramme of hightemperature tests in accordance withBS7346: Part 2: 1990, from 200 °C to600°C f or per iods v arying from 30minutes to two hours.

Some of these tests ha ve beenwitnessed by independent author itiessuch as the Loss Pre vention Council(F.I.R.T.O.) in the U.K., or under takenin independent labor atories atC.T.I.C.M. in F rance and TechnischeUniversität (T.Ü.) in Germany.

Aerofoil impeller, die cast inaluminium alloy. Componentsare X-ray inspected to ensurecompliance with standards.Categories H.T.400/2A:H.T.400/2B use either an alu-minium impeller or a speciallydesigned impeller fabricated insteel to provide stability at thehigher temperatures. TheH.T.600/1.5 uses the steelimpeller exclusively. Both impellers have a range ofblade angles and impeller so-lidity (number of blades) for flex-ibility of air duty. Impeller bladeangles are set and fixed atworks.

MotorsWoods H.T. Series fans utilisea totally enclosed squirrel cagemotor. The motor carcase isconstructed of either aluminiumalloy or cast iron dependent onthe temperature of operation.

The grades of motor insulationhave been selected to meet thespecific requirements of eachH.T. Category, as the essentialproperty of withstanding ther-mal shock is not common to allhigh temperature materials. Attemperatures above 400°C, bi-furcated fans with motor out ofthe air stream are the only reli-able solution.

Motor tests indicate than whennew, all motors used on WoodsH.T. Series fans have a safetymargin of an average of twicethe expected survival times, thisbeing based on Woods exten-sive test experience gainedduring the development of theirrange of specifications.

LubricationWoods H.T. Series fan motorbearings must be lubricated

Aerofoil FansFull technical data of the highlyefficient Woods Aerofoil Fanrange can be found in publica-tion C22a and C1a.

Aerofoil fan motors are rated tohandle the peak powers of thefans at both ambient and hightemperature. Aerofoil fanshave a safe non-overloadingcharacteristic. Two speedmotors available - please en-quire.

CasingsThe cylindrical casing, housingthe fan, is made of steel, hotdipped galvanised after manu-facture. It is flanged at each end.

S-Type - The casing surroundsthe impeller only and supportsthe motor mounting. The elec-trical terminal box is mountedon the motor. Suitable for tem-peratures up to 300°C.

L-Type - The casing completelysurrounds both the impeller andmotor. The terminal box ismounted on the casing and pre-wired at works.

Bifurcated - Simpler than theusual or split case fan, theWoods Bifurcated Aerofoil issimilar to a normal axial flow fan,but the motor is isolated from themain air stream in a tunnelwhich extends to one side of thefan casing. The motor is cooledby a cooling fan mounted on thetail end of the motor. An unob-structed supply of air at ambi-ent temperature of max 50 °Cmust be available to cool themotor, through the tunnel.

ImpellersFan categories H.T.150/2:H.T.300/0.5 and H.T.300/1mostly use the classic Woods

strictly in accordance with theinstructions on the motor name-plate.

The motor bearings andgreases used in the H.T. Serieshave been selected to providelong life at normal ambient tem-perature and still survive theemergency condition during thislife-time.

The special greases requiredfor fan motors operating above300°C are unsuitable for con-ventional relubricating methods- extended lubricators, greaseguns etc. Here the motor willneed to be dismantled andregreased at specified intervals. This does not apply to Bifur-cated Fans where the motor isseparated from the hot gases.

Electrical SuppliesH.T. Series fans are availablefor connections to 380 - 420 V/ 50 Hz / 3φ electrical supplies.For other voltages and frequen-cies - please enquire.
