    How much s t r u c t u r a l f i r e r e s i s t an ce i s nec ess ary ? The answert o t h i s q u e s t i o n r e q u i r e s a c o n s i d e r a t i o n o f human s a f e t y a ndeconomics (and energy conservat ion) .

    With r ega rd to t h e economic a s pe c t , r e s u l t s o f an economic-r i s k s t u d y f o r a t y p i c a l b u i l d i n g ( 2 ) a r e shown i n F i g ur e 2. The i n i t i a l c a l c u l a t i o n s f o r s q u ar e columns(4) took buc kl in g i n t o account by t h e ACI method, which inv olv edc a l c u l a t i n g . t he E u le r b u ck l i ng l o a d from an i n t e g r a t e d s e c t i o ns t i f f n e s s a nd m a gn if yi ng t h e moment o r e c c e n t r i c i t y . This methodwas used i n de t e rmin ing th e r a t in gs i n Supp lement No. 2 .

    I n more r e c e n t c a l c u l a t i o n s o f w a l l s and t h i n r e c t a n g u l a rcolumns (5) t h e somewhat em pi ri ca l ACI app roac h was abandoned i nf a v o u r o f a more r a t i o n a l l o a d - d e f l e c t i o n b u c k li n g a n a l y s i s ( s e eF igure 7 ) .
