Page 17 Fire Prevention Week is October 05 – 11, 2008 “Prevent Home Fires” We kicked off Fire Prevention Week at Airdrie Canadian Tire last Saturday, Oct. 4. Airdrie’s Fire Fighters and fire trucks were there, informing and educating people on fire safety, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, Co2 detectors, fire safety ladders, and answering any questions, concerns, etc. the public had. Last year, our fire hall tour program had over 400 children go through with their clubs and school groups during Fire Prevention Week where together we learned about fire safety. Wearing smoke simulated goggles, the children practiced crawling on the floor under the smoke, and during the presentation, the instructor put on the fire gear to show the children not to be afraid of the fire fighters who are there to help them get out. Every Kindergarten through to grade 6 Airdrie student received a booklet sponsored by Alberta Emergency Man- agement Agency, which is filled with many activities geared to promote fire safety, and their fire escape plan which they are encouraged to take home and share with their family. This booklet included an entry form to win a computer and a chance to become the “Fire Chief of the Day.” The Airdrie Fire Fighters will be picking an area in our community to go door-to-door checking their smoke detec- tors, changing batteries for those who need the assistance, and talking with the homeowners ensuring fire safety. FIRE SAFETY TIPS: Practice a fire escape plan monthly, changing the scenarios each time. Schools have fire drills; we should have drills at home as well. A fire doubles in size every 30 seconds; there is no time to go back - PRACTICE. Even if the batteries you put in your smoke detector 6 months ago are still working, do you know when they won’t be? Be sure - change your detector’s batteries with new ones every 6 months. Detectors do need to be replaced every 10 years as the components in them wear out/break down. Courtesy: Carstairs Fire Dept.
