Principal ’ s Ponderings…

Kia ora Hillview Whānau. In a previous newsletter I mentioned I had attended a Christian Schools Leadership Conference in Queenstown. One of the topics presented was about the importance of laying a solid foundation of Christian truth early in a child’s life. Some parents send their children to a Christian School believing that it is the school’s responsibility to lay this spiritual foundation and thus abdicate their responsibility (fortunately I have not experienced this at Hillview very often). While I would agree the Christian School can have a great influence in developing the faith of a child, I do not believe it is the school’s responsibility to make its pupils distinctly Christian. That is why we do not create any strategic aims to achieve this. We do not create a specific conversion percentage goal or attempt to monitor growth in discipleship. However, we do hope and pray that every child will establish a personal relationship with their creator and continue to honour Him through using their gifts and talents for His kingdom. It seems very clear to me (and research supports this) that as parents, we have the greatest influence over a child being exposed to and encouraged to establish a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus - yes it is God who ultimately converts but we have the responsibility to sow spiritual seed. As I returned from this conference I continued to reflect on how intentional Hillview is in providing a strong foundation of faith through its special character programme. How are we supporting parents to train their children into being passionate Christ ambassadors (2 Corinthians 5:20)? Currently I am thrilled that HCS staff not only teach a life-giving Christian Living programme but also express a genuine vibrant Christian faith and authentically integrate it into all areas of learning inside and outside the classroom. Like any programme, there is always room for improvement and we have been challenged to intentionally train our pupils to be well equipped so that when they enter into their chosen career or university study, they have the tools to not only live their faith but also defend it (apologetics). I would like to share with you an acronym that Alan Shelmon presented which provides parents and staff with thought provoking advice on how to TRAIN our pupils to engage in the world in a meaningful manner. T = TEST your child and expose their weakness. Discover the areas your child struggles with through role play, questions, or informal discussions. In this way you will begin to understand how your child thinks and can begin to coach their ideas/concepts. Even five-year-olds can reveal some excellent thinking. R = REQUIRE MORE FROM YOUR CHILD THAN YOU THINK THEY CAN HANDLE. It is important that we do not under underestimate what our child is capable of understanding. We can and should expect them to think things through carefully. Make it our aim to equip our child with the skills necessary to be an effective ambassador for God. These skills include a) knowledge – a well-informed mind, b) wisdom – a tactful/artful method, and c) character – an attractive manner. A = ARM OUR CHILDREN WITH KNOWLEDGE. 1) Knowledge of the truth: teach them what they believe and why they should believe it – give positive reasons why Christianity is true, defend against attacks or critiques of the Christian faith, and build their faith when they may have doubts. 2) Knowledge of error: children need to know the false ideas so they can stay clear of them. They also need to be aware of false teaching so they can stand against and

destroy its ideology. NB: Ignoring or ridiculing false ideas or just throwing random Bible verses at them is not effective. Instead, teach each child about the false idea, explain the reasons people believe it and show what is wrong with those reasons. I = INVOLVE your child in the battlefield of ideas. As they grow and develop confidence then they can be placed in progressively more challenging real-life situations e.g. mission trips, interview an atheist (obviously age appropriate). N = NUTURE our children by modelling Christ-like engagement. As parents and staff, we can tend to the wounds of pupils providing comfort, strength, and hope. Authentically living out these principles will meaningfully role model how to approach and engage with the many secular world views that exist. These are some challenging thoughts which I hope will ignite and motivate us all to think critically about how we are intentionally preparing our children to live as passionate ambassadors for Christ in a secular world. I will finish with the following quote which I believe is very applicable:

Ngā mihi nui whaka mana ki a koutou. Steve Frost (Tumuaki)

P.S. One further exciting announcement…….

Kimberly McLean: We are thrilled for Mrs McLean who has announced she is pregnant and is expecting the delivery to occur towards the end of this year. Both Ben and Kimberly would appreciate your prayer and support as they walk this journey together (there are some initial complications which the medical staff are monitoring). P.P.S. As this is our final newsletter for the term, I wish you all a very refreshing and re-invigorating school holiday break.

Tips for Learning

Helping a Y7-10 child with Reading (by Andy Vosslamber)

Once a child matures they need to see good role-models of reading and need to be encouraged to read a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction texts in order to help them build character as well as general knowledge. Here are some suggestions about how you could go about this:

Pick up the books your child is reading and read them yourself. Discuss the ideas in them and how you relate to these ideas as Christian parents. This will help your child grow in their discernment.

Prayer meeting in the AV room Tuesday 2.40-3.00pm All welcome.
