Formidable Falcons look to take next stepBy ALAIN POUPART

    @apoupartFins

For a home opener, the Dolphins hardly

could have been matched up against a

    tougher opponent.

Simply put, the Atlanta Falcons have

become one of the top franchises in the NFL

    over the past few years.

Whats missing from their resume is a

Super Bowl appearance, and the Falcons are

hoping this is the year they take that final

    step.

Atlanta came tantazingly close last sea-

son, falling to San Francisco in the NFCChampionship Game after Matt Ryans pass

    on fourth-and-4 from the 49ers 10-yard line

with just over a minute left fell incomplete.

Making the loss even more painful is the

fact the Falcons led 17-0 early in the second

    quarter.

At least the 2012 postseason represented

some progress for the Falcons, who had lost

in their first playoff game in 2008, 2010 and

    2011.

The core of the team thats made the

playoffs four of the past five seasons hasmostly remained the same and it includes

Ryan and his tremendous corps of receivers

Roddy White, Julio Jones and Tony

    Gonzalez.

The big change on offense for the

Falcons this season was the signing of long-

time Rams standout Steven Jackson to

replace Michael Turner at running back.

It didnt take Jackson long to make an

impact with his new team, as he ripped off a

50-yard run in the opener against the New

Orleans Saints at the Louisiana Superdome.Atlanta dropped that opener in a finish

    reminiscent of the NFC Championship

Game, as Ryan was intercepted in the end

zone by safety Roman Harper on a fourth-

and-goal from the 3-yard line in the final

    minute.

The Falcons evened their record by the

beating the St. Louis Rams in their home

    opener last Sunday.

One other change on offense for Atlanta

in 2012 is at right tackle when Lamar Holmes

has replaced longtime starter Tyson Clabo,

who is now starting for the Dolphins.

Defensively, the Falcons focused theirattention in the 2013 draft on the cornerback

position, selecting Desmond Trufant in the

first round and coming back with Robert

    Alford in the second.

They join a group thats led by ball-hawk-

ing Asante Samuel, who entered the season

as one of only 10 cornerbacks in NFL history

with at least 50 career interceptions.

    The most noteworthy newcomer on

defense, though, is veteran defensive end Osi

Umenyiora, who joined the Falcons after a long

and productive career with the New York Giants.

Umenyiora essentially has taken the place

of veteran John Abraham, for many years the

    Falcons primary pass-rushing threat.

What Atlanta really is hoping to see in

2013, though, is for a secondary pass rusher

to emerge and the loss of defensive end

Kroy Biermann to a season-ending injury

    wont help.

Guiding the Falcons defense again is

Mike Nolan, the Dolphins defensive coordi-

    nator in 2010-11.

Hell be looking for improvement from a

unit that ranked 24th in the league in total

    defense in 2012.

But the strength of this Atlanta team

clearly is the offense, an offense thats

helped the Falcons average 11 wins over the

    past five seasons.

The question now is whether the Falcons

can put everything together to take that next

step and get to the Super Bowl.

    DOLPHINS VS. FALCONS 15

Veteran running back Steven Jackson (39) and cornerback Desmond Trufant (21), a first-round pick in

2013, are among the key newcomers for the Falcons this season.

    The Falcons Run Offense

Atlantas run game in 2013 is cen-tered around 10-year veteran

Steven Jackson, but his status for

todays game was cloudy early in

the week after he sustained a leg

injury in the Falcons victory against

the St. Louis Rams his former

team in Week 2. Jackson is a

    powerful running back with good

    speed. Regardless of Jacksons sta-

tus, Atlanta has good depth at run-

ning back thanks to the versatile

    Jason Snelling and the elusive

Jacquizz Rodgers, who is a danger-

ous receiver out of the backfield.

    The Falcons Run Defense

This defensive unit relies heavily onits linebackers and defensive backs

to contribute around the line of

    scrimmage to shut down opposing

    running attacks. The Atlanta

defense features a couple of active

    linebackers in Akeem Dent and

    Sean Weatherspoon, although

    Weatherspoon will miss the game

after being placed on IR with a des-

    ignation to return. Pressure also

comes from the secondary in stop-

ping the run and getting more peo-

ple closer to the action. Safety William Moore was rewarded for his

all-around play in the offseason, and corners Asante Samuel and

Robert McClain arent shy about coming up and making plays against

the run game off the edge.

    The Falcons Pass Offense

It all starts with quarterback Matt Ryan

and his ability to spread the football

around to a group of talented receivers

and a future Hall of Fame tight end.

Ryan can make every throw and hisvision and quick release allows him to

get the football to playmakers like

Roddy White and Julio Jones on the

outside. Jones is the big-play wide

receiver who has the size and speed to

    overwhelm most cornerbacks through-

out the league. Both players can

stretch the field, allowing Harry Douglas and tight end Tony Gonzalez

to control the middle of the field. Gonzalez presents a mismatch on

most Sunday afternoons to opposing defensive coordinators and cre-

ates the biggest problems in the red zone.

Veteran Matt Bryant brings stability to the kicking game for the Falcons. Last season,

Bryant hit on 33 of 38 field goals, including all four of his attempts outside of 50 yards.

He also has 15 game-winning field goals, six of them coming as a member of the

Falcons. Second-year punter Matt Bosher set a franchise record last season with a

40.7 net average on 60 attempts and kick returner Jacquizz Rodgers has terrific speed

and elusiveness in the open field. Last year he returned his first attempt for a career-

    long 77 yard return.

    The Falcons Special Teams

    The Falcons Pass Defense

Atlanta recorded only two sacks in its

first two games and now will be with-

    out starting defensive end Kroy

Biermann, who is on IR. The mar-

quee pass rusher up front is veterandefensive end Osi Umenyiora, who

has a knack for finding the quarter-

back and still possesses the ability to

take over a football game. Outside

    linebacker Stephen Nicholas also

will try to collapse the pocket, taking

some pressure off the youth in the

    Atlanta secondary. Rookies Robert

    Alford and Desmond Trufant are

    both aggressive playmakers but that

trait should be put to the test by the

This has been a pretty low-scoring series. Both teams have reached

20 points in only two of the 11 meetings a 31-24 Dolphins victory

at Miami in 1983 and a 21-20 Dolphins victory at Miami in 1995.

This will mark the first time the teams have met in Miami in

September. Of the seven previous meetings in South Florida, one

took place in October (1992) and three took place in November

    (1974, 1986, 2005) and in December (1983, 1995, 2001).

Oronde Gadsden (153 in 1998) and Mark Duper (115 in 1986) are the

only two Dolphins players with 100-yard receiving games against

    Atlanta.

Dan Marino is the only Dolphins quarterback to pass for 300 yards

in a game against the Falcons. He did it three times 1986, 1995

    and 1998.

The Dolphins havent had a 100-yard rusher against the Falcons

since Benny Malone gained 108 yards in the Dolphins 42-7 victory in

    1974.

The Dolphins last victory against the Falcons was a 21-14 decision

on Dec. 30, 2001 when Brock Marion returned an interception for a

touchdown and Patrick Surtain picked off then-rookie Michael Vick,

in relief of injured starter Chris Chandler, twice.

    Q. What makes Brandon Gibson

    such a good player?

JP: Weve talked a little bit about it. He

does have real good route savvy and cover-

age savvy. Hes got instinct, hes got aware-

ness, hes got a feel for what type of leverage

hes getting, he can diagnose a coverage rel-

atively quickly and find kind of a soft spot.

He found some open areas in zone, he

attacked the proper leverage in man a cou-

ple times. Hes done a nice job.

    Q. Is breaking tackles and gain-ing yards after contact some-thing that can be taught torunning backs?

JP: We definitely drill it. We do some

    sideline drills with run-after-the-catch, lower-

ing the shoulder, dipping the pads, those

types of things in conjunction. Sometimes

they are ball-security drills. I think those arethings you can definitely emphasize, and it

will definitely show up on film.

    Q. What is the origin of givingplayers Thursdays off thisseason?

JP: I feel like we stumbled on this last year.

Ill be very honest with you. We had 10 days

between Buffalo and Seattle. It was

Thanksgiving, so I wanted players to have

Thanksgiving off. We went Monday, Tuesday,

Wednesday and off Thursday. Friday, the play-

ers said they felt good. They felt energized.

We talked to some people in the offseason in

regard to performance and timing of things.

We just felt like this was the best way to go.

    Q. What separates top-level

    quarterbacks from the pack?

JP: I think its still a team game. You have

to make plays at critical times if youre a quar-

terback. I dont care whatever league youre

in, it doesnt matter if youre in high school,

or college, or the NFL, youve got to make

good decisions, and youve got to make

plays at critical times. Sometimes third down

pops up as a critical time in games; fourth

quarter is obviously a critical time. I think you

just have to step up, and that being said you

need help, you cant do it by yourself. Ive

never seen a quarterback in 30 years ofcoaching do it on his own.

    Q. Mike Sherman said it would

have been OK with him to

    throw it every play against

    Cleveland based on the

    defense. Do you ever

    remember having that ability

    to do so?

JP: I cant remember, but the great

Hayden Fry used to say, Scratch where it

itches. You know what I mean? If they are

giving you some portion of the game, you

should probably emphasize that until they

take it away. Its part of the fun of coaching,

the adjustments in a chess match that take

place in the course of a game.

    Q. Is there any special prepara-

    tion that goes into defend-

    ing against a dangerous punt

    returner?

JP: We treat it just like throwing the ball

on offense. It starts with protection. The

punter plays a role, obviously. The direction,

the hang time, and the coverage units, keep-

ing good leverage on the football, and good

    old-fashioned tackling.

Head Coach Joe Philbin tackles a variety of subjects, including wide receiver

Brandon Gibsons attributes, his switch in the practice schedule, and how to

defend against a dangerous punt returner.

    If you werent coaching, what

would you be doing right now?

Wow thats a great question. If I wasnt

coaching, Id probably be a secret service

    agent.

    Whats something youve

learned about one of your play-

ers this summer?Something that I learned was that

(defensive tackle) Paul Soliai is as tough as

nails. Hes one of the toughest guys around.

    Whats your favorite thing about

    your job?

My favorite thing about my job is the

group of people I get to work with every day.

    Theyre great.

    What were your favorite team

    and player growing up?

My favorite NFL team growing up wasthe Miami Dolphins, and my favorite player

growing up was the Minister of Defense, the

    late great Reggie White.

    Which coach has had the

    biggest influence on your

    career?

It would have to be Coach Bill Parcells

because he basically taught me everything I

know about the game of football.

    JOE PHILBINHead Coach

Entering his second season as head coach of the

Miami Dolphins, Joe Philbin led the team to a 7-9

record and a second-place finish in the AFC East in

2012. Working with one of the youngest rosters in the

NFL, Philbin had the Dolphins in playoff contention

until the penultimate week of the season while

improving the teams record from the previous year.

Philbin was named the 10th head coach in Miami

Dolphins history on January 20, 2012. As a measure

of the respect Philbin earned in his first year as the

teams head coach, he was named to the Coaches

Subcommittee of the NFL Competition Committee

by Commissioner Roger Goodell on April 15, 2013.

He also was chosen by the league to make a presen-

tation at the NFLs Career Development Symposium

at the Wharton School of Business this past May.

Prior to joining the Dolphins, Philbin served as

the Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator from

2007-11. He originally joined the Packers on Feb.

10, 2003 as assistant offensive line coach. He was

elevated to tight ends/assistant offensive line

coach on Feb. 27, 2004. Packers Head Coach Mike

McCarthy promoted Philbin to offensive line coach

on Jan. 17, 2006, and then to offensive coordina-

    tor on Jan. 15, 2007.

Born in Springfield, Mass., Philbin is a 1984

graduate of Washington & Jefferson College (Pa.),

where he played tight end (1980). He also possess-

es a masters degree in education from Tulane

University (1986). He is married to Diane, and the

couple has five children Matthew, John, Kevin,

Jeff Ireland was named the Dolphins

General Manager on Jan. 2, 2008, and is now inhis sixth season in that position with the team.

He joined the club after a seven-year stint

(2001-07) with the Dallas Cowboys, including

his last three seasons there as the teams vice

president of college and pro scouting.

In his role with the Dolphins, Ireland is not

only responsible for overseeing and coordinat-

ing the college and pro personnel depart-

ments, but also helps manage the teams salary

cap and player contracts. He supervises all

scouting efforts that relate to the college draft,

free agency, the Canadian Football League,

and personnel of the other 31 NFL teams.Ireland works hand-in-hand with Head Coach

Joe Philbin in implementing a personnel plan

to build the Dolphins into a championship-cal-

    iber team.

In Irelands five seasons in Miami, he has

built a nucleus of talented young players

that have the Dolphins positioned for long-

term success. He developed a plan that

would give the team the flexibility and the

capability to bring talented newcomers to

the team heading into the 2013 season, and

carried out that plan by using all the tools at

    his disposal.

Jeff and his wife, Rachel, have three daugh-ters, Annie and twins Haley and Hannah, and a

son, Riley. The Irelands, working closely with

the Dolphins and the Dan Marino Foundation,

have helped spearhead WalkAbout Autism, an

annual event at Sun Life Stadium which has

raised more than a million dollars over the past

three years. The Irelands also have co-chaired

the Autumn Moonlight Event each October

since 2008 to help raise awareness and money

    to benefit the Nova Southeastern

    University/University of Miami Center for

    Autism and Related Disorders (CARD).

  • 7/29/2019 Finsiders Playbook: Dolphins Vs. Falcons

    46/78

    By ANDY COHEN @ACohenFins

Jason Taylor used to own the Dolphins

    team record for most consecutive

games played at 130, but hes not

going to own it after today. That dis-

tinction as the most resilient player in team

history will now belong to long-snapper John

Denney. Today will be his 131st consecutivegame.

And chances are, before hes done play-

ing, Denney will put a lot of distance

    between himself and Taylor.

When I asked Denney in training camp

about his impressive streak, about passing

Taylor in the record books, he smiled and

    shrugged: I had no idea.

I guess thats the way things are for a play-

er who, without hesitation, admits, I have

the greatest job in the world.

So you havent heard of Denney? You

    dont know much about him?

Well, thats easy to understand. Long-

snappers dont get many headlines and cer-

tainly dont get many columns written about

them. Especially a long-snapper who botch-

es a snap about once every three or four

    years.

    A record-breaking day

    for John Denney

Yes, I have the best job

in the world. I get to be

a part of the game I

    love. I get compensated

    nicely and Im not

    exposed to injuries the

    way other guys are.

  • 7/29/2019 Finsiders Playbook: Dolphins Vs. Falcons

    47/78

But if you look closer at

Denney, if you examine what he

has done, youll find the longest-

tenured player by far on the

    Dolphins, a player who survived

    his way through four different

head coaches and, through it all,

never loses sight of how lucky he

is to be a member of this exclu-

    sive fraternity.

I wake up every day and I

come to practice and I look at

the building and I see those two

    Dolphins emblems on the build-

ing, its a dream; its still surreal,

Denney said. Yes, I have the

best job in the world. I get to be

a part of the game I love. I get

compensated nicely and Im notexposed to injuries the way other

guys are. I wake up the day after

a game and my body isnt sore.

I still feel young. To be able

to make it through the many

    coaching changes here is some-

    thing to be proud of.

    Four head coaches. Think

    about that. Four different sys-

    tems. Four distinct personalities.

    Four chances for someone to

come here and bring in their own

    long-snapper. Denney talks

about all four coaches like no

    other current player can.

    Nick Saban: Hes the rea-

son I got my foot in the door. I know the fan

base in South Florida doesnt favor him, but I

cant hate the guy. I was in the right place at

the right time and Coach Saban gave me a

    shot.

Cam Cameron: That was a quick year

and, at the same time, the longest year of my

life. Nobody ever wants to go through a sea-

    son like that again.

Tony Sparano: Hell just grind you. Hes

a yeller and a grinder. You come out to work,

you do it his way, and youre going to work

    hard.

Joe Philbin: A real high-character per-

son. Hes a family man and you can tell hes

got high standards both on and off the field.

Denney was one of the only players on

this team not competing for a roster spot in

    training camp.

I cant look at it that way, he said. Ive got

to show up hungry every day. I guarantee you

there is a big board in some office upstairs with

the next 10 long-snappers that are available.

They can make a call and have the guy here in

four hours. Im always fighting for my job.

The few botched snaps that have

occurred over the past eight seasons are

things that Denney tries his best to forget,

that drive him to work harder,

that push him on days when

    there is nobody around other

than himself to do the pushing.

Like in the rain against New

England last year at Sun Life

    Stadium. The Dolphins were

punting deep in their own territo-

ry. The ball was wet. It was a low

    snap that Brandon Fields could-

nt handle. Suddenly, for one for-

    gettable play, everyone knew

    who John Denney was.

You cant dwell on that, he

said. Youll worry yourself out of

    a job.

    But, to Denneys credit, those

types of plays dont occur very

often. Hes got two Pro Bowl invi-tations as evidence. Field goals.

Extra points. Punts. For No. 92 on

your roster, life has become a

    snap.

But it wasnt always just that

way. Denney started 29 games at

    defensive end in college at

    Brigham Young. One season had

412 sacks. Deep down, though, he

knew that wouldnt be his calling.

When the offense was on the

field, Id always be on the side-

    line practicing my long-snap-

ping, he recalls. Its not a very

    glamorous job. Kids dont grow

up and tell their parents they

want to go to the park to long-snap. It just

    doesnt work that way.

But someone has to do it and, now in his

ninth season with the Dolphins, you can

argue that Denney may just do it better than

anyone else. Today will make it a team record

131 games in a row never came close to

missing one and he doesnt want to think

about the day it may come to an end.

I want to play as long as theyll have me,

he said. You keep your nose out of trouble

    and you do your job.

He smiled and, as he walked away, simply

    whispered: Im truly blessed.

    THIS ISSUE: Keith Sims

The Finsiders is the Miami Dolphins multi-media show that airs every weekday afternoonfrom 5-7. Finsider and former Pro Bowl Dolphinsguard Keith Sims shares his experiences play-ing in home openers with Sean Grimm in thisinstallment of Finsiders Focus.

Ill always remember my first home game. That game was incredible. I think back to that,

it was a division opponent we hadnt beatenin a lot of years. To win that game by a 30-7margin while facing Bruce Smith and DarrylTalley, Cornelius Bennett and guys like thatwas great. There were a lot of butterfliesgoing into that game. But it was exciting foreveryone on the Dolphins to be a part ofbeating Buffalo for the first time in a longtime.

Theres nothing like having your nameintroduced for the first time at home. You gothrough preseason and you get your intro-ductions, but there was nothing like comingout of the tunnel and looking up and seeing

75,000 people screaming. You hear it, butyoure so pumped up and energetic that itkind of goes silent when you go out there. Itsactually a long run through the tunnel, butyou dont feel it, you just kind of float on acloud getting out there.

Its important to start off the home sched-ule with a win. Unfortunately, this year theDolphins have a very difficult early part of theschedule. So you have to take it week byweek. Winning at home is always critical.Beating an opponent of the talent level thatAtlanta brings to the table is huge as well. Itsnice for the team, for the fans, for the city tofeel like this is a tough place for teams to

come in and play. I think its important, but itsnot make or break because of the opponentand how early the season is, but its alwaysnice to win at home.

We were 7-1 during my career in homeopeners as a Dolphin. A lot of that had to dowith Coach Shula. He had us prepared to playearly in the season. He put a lot of emphasisin that first ballgame, the home opener inparticular. I can tell you back then, playing inJoe Robbie Stadium, it was an intense home-field advantage for us. We took a lot of pride

in winning games on our home field, particu-larly early in the month of September whenwe had the heat factor. Were hoping that thisDolphins team gets back to that level.

When I played, the heat was a huge factor. We played a lot of those 1 oclock games.Coach Shula really rode us a lot to be condi-tioned and ready to go. He always said,Fatigue makes cowards of us all. And thefourth quarter was ours. We took a lot ofpride in still being at full strength and beingable to go 100 percent in the fourth quarter.

Sept. 21, 1980 QB Bob Griese wins his 100th

game, coming off the bench and passing for

two TDs in the fourth quarter of a 20-17 vic-

    tory at Atlanta.

Bowl I has Don Shula opposed by Baltimore

rookie punt returner David Shula. The

Dolphins outlast the Colts, 31-28, for their

    fourth straight win in Baltimore.

    Sept. 21, 1986 Miami suffers a heartbreak-

ing 51-45 overtime loss against the New York

Jets at the Meadowlands. Dan Marino finish-

es the afternoon 30-of-50 for 448 yards and

six TDs. The six TDs are a personal high for

Marino and tie the team record held by Bob

Griese. Mark Duper (154) and Mark Clayton

    (174) each have over 100 yards receiving in

    the game.

Sept. 22, 1991 Don Shula captures the 300th

victory of his coaching career as the Dolphins

beat the Green Bay Packers, 16-13. With

career coaching win number 300, Shula joins

only NFL coaches to win 300 or more games.

Sept. 22, 2002 The Dolphins snap an eight-

game losing streak against the Jets with a

convincing 30-3 victory at Pro Player Stadium.

The victory also marks the Dolphins 17th

straight at home during the regular season in

    the months of August/September. Ricky

Williams rushes for 151 yards and a touch-down on 24 attempts, becoming the first

player in team history to amass three straight

    100-yard rushing games.

Sept. 21, 2008 The Dolphins defeat the New

England Patriots, 38-13, at Gillette Stadium,

snapping the Patriots 19-game regular sea-

son winning streak. In the game, the Dolphins

unveil their Wildcat offense, which produces

four touchdowns, each of which involves

Ronnie Brown. They include three rushing

scores while Brown also throws a touchdownpass to tight end Anthony Fasano. Brown

racks up four rushing scores overall on the

    afternoon, a new Dolphins record.

Who is the toughest offensive lineman

    youve faced?

Clabo: Im going to pick someone whos retired, so

that if I play them again, they dont have mental power

    over me. LaRoi Glover.

Who sets the bar at your position?

Clabo: Right now, the guy in San Francisco

Anthony Davis and then Michael Oher. They are

probably right there, neck and neck at right tackle.

Which player did you admire growing

    up?

Clabo: I looked up to my dad. He played football

in college at Tennessee and I thought that was pretty

awesome. Thats why Im a football player.

What has been the most memorable

    moment of your career?

Clabo: The NFC Championship Game last year

was pretty memorable. Obviously it didnt work out for

me, but it was a pretty memorable game.

Which coach had the biggest influence

    on your playing career?

Clabo: Alex Gibbs very brief, but he was an

    interesting person. Also, Tom Cable.

Current and former players share their views on different football topics

This edition:Offensive tacklesCurrent player Former player

TYSON CLABO RICHMOND WEBBWho was the toughest defensive line-man you faced?

    Webb: Bruce Smith.

Who set the bar at your position?Webb: I guess when I first got in, some of the guys

were Anthony Munoz, Jackie Slater those were prob-

ably the two top tackles at the time when I first got into

the league. At the tackle position, Id say those were

the top two guys that I looked up to when I first got intothe league.

What player did you admire growingup?

Webb: Growing up in Dallas, I was born and raised

a Cowboys fan. So Roger Staubach, Tony Dorsett, Drew

Pearson, those were the guys that were the superstars

back then. Id probably say one of those guys were my

    favorite players.

What was the most memorablemoment of your career?

Webb: It would probably be when Coach Shulagot the record for the most wins. The winningest coach

in the NFL, that would probably be the thing that

    stands out the most.

What coach had the biggest influenceon your playing career?

Webb: I had some great coaches. Id probably say

Coach Shula he was instrumental in bringing me to

the Dolphins in the early part of my career, so Id prob-

ably say he was the most influential.
