    The Proposal

For this Unit in media, we need to create a film or fashion magazine that is suitable for our chosen targetaudience.

I will be creating a film magazine targeted mainly at teenage girls (aged 12-16) this is due to the fact that they goto the cinema more often than older people will and will be interested in upcoming and current films. It will beaimed mainly at girls because the main film that will be promoted will be a romantic comedy. It will not onlybe aimed at teenagers but also people in the 25-30 age range if they like to be updated on the latest films andwant to find out about current actors and actresses. I have chosen to do this genre because it will give me theopportunity to take many photos and use them in my magazine, it is also quite an easy genre to take picturesfor and I am a big fan of romantic comedies.

My magazine will be laid out with the masthead at the top, the barcode at the bottom and a main image in themiddle. Most magazines have these features in the same layout. The main image will be of a famous actorfrom the latest romantic comedy coming out. This will make readers want to buy the magazine as there is animage of a young attractive man on the front cover. It will also have a plug along the bottom of the magazineto allow the audience to see what it will contain as well as taglines for competitions that the reader can getinvolved in. This will persuade the reader to buy the magazine as prizes will be given out. My magazine will bereleased monthly as most film magazines that I have researched are released monthly as well. Because mytarget audience is aimed at teenage girls, the colour scheme I will be using will contain a lot of pink however

there will be unisex colours as boys can read the magazine as well. The price will be average because teenagegirls dont have jobs and might find it hard to pay for if they dont have a lot of money, however because it is amonthly magazine, it will contain more features and therefore will have to cost more than a weekly or dailymagazine. There will be a lot of features such as posters, reviews, previews, competitions which will keep thereaders interested and occupied.

    Double Page Spread Analysis

The main image on the first page links in with the text on the other side. The contrast of the image is black and white

which matches the colour scheme of the whole double page spread. The image takes up a lot of the space which is

effective and gives the reader an idea as to who the interview is about because its so big and eye catching.

The effect of Hugh Grant written in a bold

font allows the reader to immediately knowthat the article is about Hugh Grant.

The pull quote is useful as it gives

the reader an idea of what sorts of

things will be in the interview.

    The colour

    scheme is

    mainly black

    and white

    which looks

    professional.

    The first

    letter of the

    whole article

    is big and

    bold which

    tells thereader that

    its the

    beginning of

    the article.

    The interview

    questions are

    written in bold

    to make them

    stand out from

    the answers.

    This makes it

    easier to read

    the interview.

    A thick red

    lineunderlines

    The Big

    Interview

    which makes

    it stand out,

    especially

    because its

    red.

    The answers

    are quite

    short, which

    helps as it

    doesnt put

    off the

    reader and

    is easier toread.

The MastheadThe Masthead is written at the top ofthe magazine and written in the colourwhite to stand out on the orange fierybackground. The fact that it is writtenbehind the main image shows that it is a

popular magazine as the publisherdoesnt mind the fact that the readerscant see the title clearly.

The Main ImageThe main image relates to the topicof the issue being sold. The issue isbased on different Blockbuster films,so the main image is of three toughlooking men each from a differentblockbuster film. If a reader was topick up this issue they would mostprobably be interested in action

films as the background isAll fiery as most action filmshave explosions and fire. Also theman in the centreWill Smith is holding a gun whichdepicts danger and violence whichare all thingsthat you would typically find in anaction film.

The TaglineThe tagline helps attract readersas they might like what the tagline says as it talks about whatsinside the magazine. Summers20 Biggest Movies Revealed!indicates that there will be a list of20 top films that are coming out insummer and lots of people wouldwant to find out what they are.

The Main Sell LineThe main sell line TheBlockbuster Issue informs thereader what the issue will bebased about, this could decidewhether or not a reader would bythe magazine. This is due to thefact that people might not beinterested in what the issue isabout, for example they mightnot be interested in bigblockbusters therefore wouldntbuy this particular issue howeveranother issue might be based onRomcoms and they might be

interested in that and thereforebuy it.

The PlugThe plug informs the reader on whatthere will be inside the magazine. In thiscase it has a film strip of different filmsthat will be talked about throughout the

magazine. The Vs between each imageindicates there is a competition betweeneach film.

BarcodeThe barcode allows the reader to purchase the magazine

    The Sell Line

The sell line The Box-office battlestarts here, we predict summerswinners is effective because theuse of the word Battle adds asense of tension and would makethe audience want to find out whothe winners might be andtherefore buy the magazine.

Colour SchemeThe colours used in this magazine are

quite masculine (orange and black)and indicates that the magazinewould be appropriate for men. Also, men are more attracted to actionfilms.

    Key ConceptsCodes and Conventions

Film magazines would normally be dedicated to one particular film genre. Each issue would be based on either Romance Action Horror etc, and a film that fits the genre would be the main subject in

    the issue.

Conventions of a magazine cover are to include, a masthead (the name of the magazine), a sell line and a main image (of an attractive actor or actresses/ an image from a film that will be talked about

later in the magazine) this would attract the readers attention and persuade the reader to buy the magazine. A large main image would attract the reader, and sell lines about popular films

would help the reader become more interested. Generally a magazine would contain, a cover page, a contents page, interviews and posters. The style of the magazine determines who would

buy it and read it. The use of colours, the font style, and who is talked about throughout the magazine would help a reader decide whether or not they would buy any sort of magazine.

The contents page would normally contain a variety of images, and have a list of things that will be in the magazine. The purpose of the contents page is so that readers can jump from page to page

easily and read about what ever they are interested in without any problems.

Adverts are normally found throughout the magazine. The adverts are usually about films that have recently come out, and films that are linked in with the genre of the magazine. Their would also be

    DVD/ Bluray adverts.

The topics of the articles and the film magazine in general are usually linked to the film genre. The format on each page will look similar as they will all have a title, a sub heading sometimes, the article

written in columns and then pictures related to the article all around it.

    Audience

Magazines are usually read when people are bored. Anyone can read a magazine and different magazines are designed for different people. If the theme of a film magazine is to do with a actions films

for one week, males would be the target audience and the people who buy the magazine would be dominated by males. However if in the following the theme changed to romance, the people

who buy the magazine would be dominated by females because they are more likely to be interested in it. The uses and gratifications theory says that people read magazines because of

personal identity, escapism and diversion, personal relationships and for information. So, if people read magazines to escape from the real world, then it has to be about something they are

interested in which shows peoples preferences in buying magazines.

    Representation

A magazine can represent itself by its use of colours, the pictures used, the font and the theme of the magazine. You can tell if a magazine is all about sport if, the colours used are quite masculine, the

images used are based on different sports and the theme of the magazine is to do with getting fit. You could also tell if a maga zine was to do with womens fashion if, the girls used are feminine,

the images used are of different items of clothes, shoes and handbags. The style, colour scheme and images all represent a magazine, and are known as mode of address. Every magazines

mode of address changes according to its target audience.

    Institution

The cover price and adverts are the two main sources of revenues in a magazine. The adverts within the magazine help make a lot of money. In the UK there are 2 types of regulator of magazines: The

press complaints commission and the advertising standards authority. Their job is to deal with customer complaints and queries about articles and different features within different magazine

however the magazine arent regulated too strictly as they feel that publishers should be free to publish whatever they want. There are four main magazine publishing companies, IPC Media,

The National Magazine, Cond Nast and Bauer Consumer Media.

    IPC Media

This company publishes a range of different genre magazines. They have the responsibility for publishing Britains best selli ng magazines. They have a variety of womens fashion and lifestyle magazinesfor example: Now and Living

    The National Magazine

This publishing company is the most well known in the Uk, with over 13 million reading it each year.

    Cond Nast

Cond Nast publishes magazines based on fashion for women. Example of these magazines include: Vogue and Glamour.

    Bauer Consumer Media

Bauer Consumer Media is a worldwide magazine publishing aswell as a media company. Bauer launched in the UK with the magazine Bella in 1987 and now publishes over 300 magazines over 15

different countries around the world including Empire Heat.

    Target Audience

The target audience I have chosen for my film magazine is teenagers and young adults. It will be aimed at teenagersaged between 13-21 (mainly teenage girls because it will be a romantic comedy special) and adults who areinterested in the latest films. People who will be attracted and buy my magazine, will be the sort of people who goto the cinema regularly, take an interest in actors and actresses and buy and watch DVDs.

The social grade for my target audience will be aimed at classes B-D. This is because it wont contain high amounts oflanguage, so anyone can read it easily including people in class A, as it wont take them long to read. Its easy tounderstand and interesting to read. The audience who read my magazine can use diversion and escapism whenreading it, because it can give them a break from what they are doing. Teenagers are most likely to be doing theirGCSEs and would want to take a break and relax; my magazine will be useful as it will allow them to do so. Alsoteenage girls love a bit of gossip and are interested in young good looking actors, my magazine will contain

interviews from young actors and actresses will teenagers can relate to. At schoolMy magazine will be a magazine that teenagers can relate to. It will contain interviews and gossip about actors and

actresses lives, which would can influence my audiences personal relationships. My film magazine will include, reviews on different films and behind the scenes images from the latest films which people who have a love forfilms (young adults) would really be interested in finding out about.

The lifestyle my target audience would pursue would involve waking up in the morning, perhaps read a magazinewhilst eating their breakfast/getting to school. Do their homework and chill out (watch TV, listen to music, surfthe internet, read magazines) before going to bed. Other people that fall into my target audience might have to goto work, and therefore would look forward to their time in which they are able to just relax. During this time they

would be able to watch films and catch up with all the latest gossip by reading a magazine. Because these peoplelove their free time, they would be the best target audience to read my magazine. They would be eager to find outabout all the latest celebrity gossip, read about fashion advice, and want to have a look through a few filmreviews.
