NEWSOn 11-13 July, Fine & Country held five events to celebrate the growth of the brand as the Fine & Country Big Weekend. As weekends go, it doesn’t get much bigger than this.
The weekend started with the International Conference at the Millennium Hotel, Mayfair. Over 150 licensees from across the world attended seminars and workshops covering a range of topics including training and the latest developments within the network.
Next up was the 1920’s Gala Dinner and Charity Auction, where Malcolm Lindley, Managing Director of Fine & Country, launched The Fine & Country Foundation. The foundation will support and raise awareness of the causes of homelessness, a social issue Fine & Country is passionate about. The auction and some generous donations raised an admirable £40,500.
The next day saw the official launch of Fine & Country Golf, the new division run in partnership with European Tour Properties and Troon Golf. Another launch filled the evening with one of Fine & Country’s most impressive offices starting up: Fine & Country Fulham.
The Big Weekend was rounded off with the much-anticipated Fine & Country Warwickshire Gold Cup, with thousands of guests attending to sip, sup and watch the high profile polo match.
The Biggest of Weekends
With over 4,300 registered guests, the 2014 Fine & Country Warwickshire Gold Cup was a huge success. Guests from across the globe, including South Africa, France, Spain and Russia, as well as people from the local area and throughout the UK, travelled to Dallas Burston Polo Club to watch the high-profile polo match.
At the end of the day, the Dawson Group Marauders claimed the winning title against Quicksilver to take home the coveted Fine & Country Warwickshire Gold Cup. Last year’s winners C.A.N.I came in fourth place. “The Fine & Country Warwickshire Gold Cup Polo event was a great day, made even better by the fact that we managed to win the Cup. I’m very proud of our team because this tournament is well known for being a prestigious one to win,” said Freya Dawson from Dawson Group Marauders.
As well as spectating, guests enjoyed a range of activities including helicopter rides, archery, shooting and obstacle courses, not to mention the outstanding food and beverages on offer.

Global Reach
Teeing OffEarlier this year, Fine & Country entered into an exciting partnership with European Tour Properties and Troon Golf to create a new web-based golf division that boasts an exclusive portfolio of elite developments around the globe. Fine & Country Golf is now in full swing.
The launch of Fine & Country Golf as part of the Big Weekend saw representatives from each golf venue showcase an elite portfolio of properties to potential buyers and the Fine & Country network. Six European Tour Properties and Troon Golf developments were showcased at the launch; Quinta da Lago, Linna Golf, Jumeirah Golf Estates, PGA Catalunya, EGCC and Las Colinas and over 100 people attended including Fine & Country agents from South Africa, Cyprus, France, Portugal, Spain, Russia, UAE, and the UK.
Fine & Country agents can now access this portfolio of golf properties. The new referral opportunities presented a fantastic networking opportunity at the launch for Fine & Country’s international agents and the golf venues. “This new partnership is off to a flying start and represents an exciting step forward within the luxury golf property market,” says Mike Bidwell, Fine & Country’s Head of Sales. The new golf website golf.fineandcountry.com will be launched shortly.
Malcolm Lindley, Managing Director of Fine & Country, launched the Fine & Country Foundation on 11 July and to date £40,500 has been raised. The Fine & Country Foundation has been created to help combat one of the largest social issues in the UK – homelessness.
In 2013, the government estimated around 2,414 people sleep rough on any one night across England, a rise of 36% over the previous three years. Whilst many think that the reasons for homelessness arise from drug use and alcoholism, people generally become homeless for a whole range of complex and overlapping reasons such as family breakdown, mental or physical health problems or debts. Solving homelessness is not only about putting a roof over people’s heads, but also involves trying so tackle the reasons they became homeless in the first place.
The Fine & Country Foundation is dedicated to bringing together all Fine & Country agents to raise awareness and support homeless charities. The lofty goal for its first year is £1,000,000. For more information on the Fine & Country Foundation see how you can help at www.fineandcountry.com.

Combeinteignhead, nestled on the banks of the Teign Estuary in South Devon is an attractive hamlet. The village sits a few miles south east of Newton Abbot and is a conservation area, with plenty of traditional cob and thatch lending it character and charm.
The village lies within the civil parish of Haccombe with Combe, between Newton Abbot and Shaldon. Despite its proximity to the river, the name Combeinteignhead is not derived from it. In the Domesday Book the district contained thirteen manors, which totalled an area of ten hides. This gave the entire area the moniker of the ‘Ten Hide’, which was later corrupted to Teignhead through the infl uence of the river’s name. Today the village exudes a strong sense of community centered on two popular local inns offering real ales and quality food. Local facilities include a village hall, historical church and sailing club and in the neighbouring village of Stokeinteignhead there is a school and local shop.
Leisure activities abound in this area, with cricket, water sports, walking and cycling. Beaches can be found within a short driving distance and the A380 is within easy reach, providing good access to the A38 and M5. Newton Abbot nearby provides good mainline railway links to London Paddington and Exeter Airport.

Nestled amongst the hills of Provence, France, you’d be forgiven thinking that you were entering a traditional medieval village when encountering Terre Blanche for the first time. The five-star hotel, spa and golf resort, tantalisingly close to glittering Cannes and Saint-Tropez, blends seamlessly into its surroundings, sun-kissed stonewashed walls and tree-lined paths weaving between fields of lavender and olive groves.
Terracotta-clad villas spill down the hillsides of the 700-acre estate, ushering guests into a private world of serenity and boasting panoramic views over the Van Gogh-inspired landscape. Here, discerning golfers also have the opportunity to have their own exclusive home built within the confines of this preserved and secure estate.
The resort’s rustic exterior belies a superb, contemporary range of amenities however; four fine dining restaurants and a world-class spa comprise a dream destination whose quality is surpassed only by the A-list guests it attracts.

What really sets Terre Blanche apart, however, is the revolutionary Albatros Golf Performance Center, encompassing the renowned Leadbetter Academy and Biomecaswing centre. Together, they provide one of the most comprehensive golf research and teaching facilities in the world. “They have all the tools and expertise right there; for professional golfers, elite sportspeople or guests who simply want health advice or physiotherapy treatment,” indicates Jean-Marie Casella, Director of Terre Blanche Golf.
The venue’s reputation for sporting excellence has been quickly established, resulting in its inauguration as the first European Tour Performance Institute (ETPI). “The ETPI started when The European Tour and the staff who operate the on-Tour physiotherapy unit asked me to develop my biomechanics concept for the benefit of all European Tour players,” explains Jean-Jacques Rivet, Head of Biomechanics and Sports Performance at the ETPI.
Through the ETPI, Rivet’s task is to collect and evaluate scientific data about the golfer’s body, club and ball flight, allowing European Tour players and amateurs alike to create cutting edge personal development programmes. Using detailed physical, video and force plate analysis, Rivet and his highly trained team of biomechanists can identify any weaknesses in a player’s action which may hinder performance.
“It all began when David Leadbetter asked me how to adapt a golf swing in a way that was physically compatible with his players,” explains Rivet. “He was concerned with protecting his golfers from injury.”
“The process we have developed interprets how a player’s physical limitations may interfere with their golf swing,” he continues. “With our analysis, we can help the player’s coach modify their training programme and direction for the future.”
Professional coaches at the centre’s illustrious Leadbetter Academy, headed by Alain Alberti, use the information provided by Rivet and his team to develop series of bespoke drills for their players, targeting any weaknesses. “The most important piece of equipment in our process is the force plate,” says Rivet. “Developed in conjunction with AboutGolf, it is the only one in the world able to track the player’s weight in each foot, their centre of gravity, and the location of the ball. We know from our data that a golfer’s centre of gravity is linked to the direction of their club head and club
“Our visitors come here to escape,” says Marion Saltiel, Director of Communications at Terre Blanche. “It really is like entering a paradise. While we do focus on golf and elite sport, many guests simply seek relaxation and to enjoy the stunning surroundings.” Nevertheless, Terre Blanche remains a golfing tour de force in the region.
“We have two fantastic Championship courses designed by Dave Thomas, which are superbly integrated into the environment,” explains Saltiel. “We also offer a range of excellent practice facilities for golfers to train in all aspects of their game”.

face position, so we determine how they can manage their total weight during the swing to enhance their smash factor and compressive force at impact.”
Rivet identifies a range of issues in the players he works with, but highlights some important patterns. “The most common problem is the lack of coordination and foot grounding,” he states. “Without good foot grounding it’s difficult to separate your shoulders and hips during the rotation of the golf swing. This is often the result of flexibility restrictions in the legs.”
The team at the Albatros Center employ many solutions to combat these issues, such as improving posture and grounding through footwear management, prescribing muscular elasticity and coordination exercises, swing correction techniques and the provision of tailored equipment.
Mr. Rivet and his team work with a host of top European Tour professionals, and it’s this experience that gives Terre Blanche its distinguished reputation. “Every six weeks we travel to European Tour tournaments with the force plate so players can check their foot grounding,” says Rivet. “It’s very popular.”
“We give players confidence. By teaching them how to repeat and maintain their swing, they can create a strategy on the golf course. The players know that swing maintenance is far more important than their power,” he continues.
Interestingly, it’s not only the top professionals harnessing this technology to improve their golf. “We can apply the same concepts used with European Tour players to all standards of golfers,”
explains Rivet. “That’s why we have 7-year-old children and 70-year-old golfers using our service.
What we are doing for top-level sportsmen is the same for amateurs.”
It’s no surprise then that the centre is so popular with Terre Blanche’s guests, who can book packages
that combine spa treatments, fitness programmes and bespoke biomechanical analysis. This combination of classic luxury and groundbreaking sports science is unique to Terre Blanche. “The spirit of Terre Blanche is really the spirit of the owner, Mr. Dietmar Hopp,” says Rivet. “He’s a man with big vision, who has achieved the ultimate recipe of classic luxury and sporting innovation.”
So what does the future hold for Terre Blanche?
“We have hosted many of the top French players already, including Raphaël Jacquelin, and we are in a very important position to develop golf in France,” states Rivet. “There are now two ETPI centres, with the centre at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai having been launched last winter, but in the future we hope to expand this network, training teams of coaches and health professionals to work holistically in developing golf worldwide.”
As professional and amateur golf become ever more competitive, with technology playing an increasingly key role in development of the sport, the future for the ETPI and Albatros Golf Performance Center certainly looks good. Terre Blanche’s fusion of breath-taking five star facilities with this avant-garde approach to sporting performance creates a dream holiday destination at arguably one of the finest golf resorts in the world.
“WE GIVE PLAYERS CONFIDENCE. BY TEACHING THEM HOW TO REPEAT AND MAINTAIN THEIR SWING, THEY CAN CREATE A STRATEGY ON THE GOLF COURSE. THE PLAYERS KNOW THAT SWING MAINTENANCE IS FAR MORE IMPORTANT THAN THEIR POWER.”
Terre Blanche will play host to the European Senior Tour during the French Riviera Masters from 3-5 October, 2014. For more information, contact Terre Blanche Hotel Spa Golf Resort at www.terre-blanche.com.

PERCHED ON ZWAANSWYK’S MOUNTAIN IN CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA, A RECENTLY COMPLETED HOME WITH SPECTACULAR VIEWS AWAITS. GISELLE WHITEAKER TAKES A PEEK
I N T E R N A T I O N A LP R O P E R T Y
In the midst of the Table Mountain range in South Africa is a large whaleback shaped mountain that forms part of the mountainous spine of the Cape Peninsula in Table Mountain National Park, Cape Town. Called Constantiaberg, this is one of a trio of high mountains in the range, consisting of sandstones, that stretches from Table Mountain all the way to Cape Point.
The lower eastern slopes of Constantiaberg are covered by the commercial pine and gum plantations of Tokai forest, and are crisscrossed with hiking trails and roads used for harvesting the trees. The forest is popular for walking, running and mountain biking.
In the foothills lies Tokai, a large residential suburb of Cape Town, bordered by Steenberg and Kirstenhof to the South, Bergvliet to the East, Constantia to the North and the plantations against the mountain to the West. Some of the roads here are paved with red brick and streams run through Tokai and Constantia and the pine plantations, forming green belts where nature makes its home and recreational opportunities abound. Originally an area of boutique vineyards and smallholdings, the suburb has grown into a prime residential area, featuring several old Cape Dutch houses, as well as stunning contemporary properties.
Nestled high on Zwaanswyk’s mountain on a quiet cul-de-sac is a recently completed home, built to take advantage of the spectacular day and night views of False Bay, Table Mountain, the
ocean, the city expanse and the Hottentots-Holland mountains. A veritable panorama of awe-inspiring scenes awaits a new owner.
While modern in style with double volume open plan spaces, extra-large light fi lled rooms, superb indoor/outdoor entertaining spaces and top-of-the line fi nishes throughout, the house remains warm and welcoming and blends superbly into the lavish indigenous gardens. The house and landscaping was designed to make the house wind-free, capturing the best the weather here has to offer.
This is a fantastic entertaining and family home with a tennis court and swimming pool, as well as a large grassy area and extensive patio space. Extra attention has been paid to every detail including a fl oating main stairway and detailed architectural features. A custom imported Italian kitchen will keep every home chef satisfi ed and further international design fl air is found in German precision glass folding doors. State-of-the-art security and audio-visual systems are incorporate into the property, as are many eco-friendly features such as solar panels and geysers, a water-wise garden, extensive insulation, an automated pool cover and a top of the line computerised irrigation system.
Comprised of three open lounges; four light-fi lled extra-large en-suite bedrooms upstairs with spectaculars views; a large guest room with private access to the garden; six full baths and an expansive games room, the home also includes a bachelor suite/
staff accommodation with full bath and kitchen, an art room and study. There is extensive storage space with a separate large storage room/wine cellar that could be turned into a second staff accommodation. The art room and bachelor suite both have separate entrances and could easily be converted to work-at-home offi ces. In addition, at the bottom of the property there is an area for possible conversion to a dressage arena or separate rental unit with its own separate entrance.
This really is the perfect home for a family, executive professional or those who love to entertain. Part of the city, yet with a stunning outlook and close to both the mountains and the sea, this is an opportunity not to be missed.

A few miles east of the historic Royal Burgh of Linlithgow, half an hour or so from central Edinburgh, is the village of Philpstoun. The village originated in the oil shale mining boom in the 19th Century and is endowed with rich arable farmland. Nearby Linlithgow has an excellent selection of local shops and there is a variety of outdoor leisure facilities nearby including Blackness Castle and the beach, Beecraigs Country Park, Muiravonside Country Park, water sports and pleasure boat trips on the Firth of Forth, the Union Canal for cycling and canoeing, hill walking, golf, and a dry ski slope at Polmont.
In these surrounds sits an exceptional detached Victorian fi ve-bedroom house with lovely gardens, a stable, paddocks, a coach house currently used as a double garage incorporating a stable, tack room, workshop and storage, and a number of additional outbuildings. This elegant property, Pardovan House, dates from around 1850. The home is set within substantial grounds – approximately 1.4 acres – which include a sweeping driveway that leads to the gorgeous expanse of garden, a large paddock, an orchard, and a kitchen garden, just waiting for a home cook toprovide for.
The property is located in a wonderfully tranquil and rural setting with an open outlook across fi elds and countryside, and yet conveniently close to excellent transport networks for easy commuting within central Scotland and further afi eld.
The property is superbly presented, refurbished to an exacting standard by the current owners, whilst retaining many period features such as wood fl oors and cornicing. The house is entered through a solid timber door into a vestibule with a traditional tiled fl oor. A further part-glazed internal door leads to a hall with a wooden fl oor and doors off to the principal reception rooms, and a sizeable under-stairs storage cupboard.
A stunning drawing room of generous proportions is situated near the front with triple windows facing west, overlooking the garden and countryside beyond. These windows capture the afternoon and evening sun, leaving the drawing room bathed in a golden glow. A further window facing south adds to this bright and welcoming entertaining space. Picture a fi re crackling in the traditional fi replace, warming a winter’s night and complementing the delightful ambience of the room.
Adjacent to the drawing room is an elegant, bright and spacious dining room with two double windows facing south, two recessed arched alcoves, and another open fi replace with a traditional fi re surround. Across the hall is a comfortable snug with a double window to the front overlooking that stunning garden, the views stretching across the countryside. Ensuring warmth, a third traditional fi re surround with open fi re, is found here.

A door leads from the snug to the billiard room, perfect for family entertainment and this leads through to the rear hall which provides access to a boot room with hanging space, a door to the north garden, and a separate cloakroom. At the opposite end of the rear hall is abutler’s pantry.
The kitchen and a laundry are located off the rear hall with double windows facing east capturing the morning sun, and a traditional wood burning stove. The kitchen is generously proportioned with ample space for dining and could easily be converted into a welcoming home hub.
Double doors lead to the garden room, which is perfectly positioned to face south overlooking the garden, with glazed windows on all three sides and double doors opening directly on to the garden. A further door leads to the prep kitchen which has a door out to the courtyard with three external storage rooms and a gate to the east garden.
An impressive carpeted staircase with cast iron balustrades and wooden handrail leads to the fi rst fl oor with a lovely stained glass window casting shards of coloured light. From here, doors lead to the bedrooms. The luxurious master suite has south facing windows, a traditional fi replace, a dressing room with double aspect windows and ample space for dressing room furniture. The generously sized, high-specifi cation en-suite master bathroom has a window to the east which catches the morning sunlight.
This property, surrounded by arable farmland, is a comfortable home, successfully combining country living with city access. It seeks a new family to welcome into its heart and hearth; to call it home.
