“The mentor/pupil relationship is as old as jazz itself. Mentors learn from elders, process the information they receive from others in their genera-tion, and use all that enables them to develop their personal style.” —Dr. Billy Taylor

“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be part of this great experience. I never knew there were other people interested in chang-ing the society that people of color live in. I have always believed that art is the best way to connect with people. I’m so filled with ideas for change and the ways to help. I feel much stronger and not afraid to take a risk. Thank you so much for everything!!!” Project 2050 participant, age 17

A Message from the Director

This year, as in the past, the Fine Arts Center brought to the campus leading artists, dancers, musicians, directors, conductors, composers, and choreographers. Among them was the 9th Annual Billy Taylor Jazz Residency Artist, trumpeter Sean Jones. Artist Residencies are vitally important because they bring students into

contact with a range of arts practitioners and encourage robust dialogue and communication among artists, students, and the general public.

We believe it is time to initiate a major program at the Fine Arts Center to deepen the diversity of the arts education we offer by creating more opportunities for artist residencies. Such a program could connect UMass academic departments and arts programs and encourage collaboration and longer-term creative influence by visiting artists. At the same time, the University, as an intellectual center, could provide background and stimulation to the artist.

There is much to be gained by initiating a major artist-in-residency program. Take a look inside this report to see what we have been able to accomplish with a limited residence program, and stay with us to see how much more we can do.

New Works for a New WORLD

In New York, the first National Asian American Theater Festival included two new pieces developed in New WORLD Theater’s annual summer playlab, including one directed by Artistic Director Andrea Assaf. A one-week developmental period in Amherst was capped by two public performances before the shows traveled to New York. Parang Sabil: The Ballad of the Kris is an original piece by the dance-theater company Kinding Sindaw based on the legendary ballad of the Tausug people of the southern Philippines. The age-old story of resistance, dignity, and courage is told through indigenous Tausug dance, music, martial arts and epic storytelling. This postmodern version portrays the struggle against U.S. military occupation of the Philippines in the early 20th century and the 1906 massacre of hundreds of men, women, and children by U.S. troops. Mark Twain’s anti-imperialist broadsides in response to this event are incorporated into the performance.

A second piece developed by New WORLD, Ramble-ations: A One-D’Lo Show, a multi-character exploration of clashes of culture and identity in modern America, also traveled to New York for the festival.

9th Annual Billy Taylor Jazz Residency

The immensely talented jazz trumpeter Sean Jones, best known for his current playing at Jazz at Lincoln Center, was the ninth annual Billy Taylor Jazz Residency artist. For three days this young talent inspired UMass Amherst students, high schoolers, and community members with his exquisite artistry. Dr. Taylor believes that the influence of these rising professional jazz mentors is unparalleled and a presence essential to the jazz education experience. These young artists are able to reach students and inspire them in a way not possible with more established talent. Sean Jones’s visit included master classes and jazz composition, arranging, theory and improvisation for UMass jazz students. His impassioned and personal talk about the positive impact of arts and educational experiences in the lives of young people inspired FAC board members, as did his performance with UMass faculty member Jeff Holmes. Sean also led a master class for the Amherst Regional High School Band, gave a live radio interview on WMUA, and taught the Lively Arts general education class. The residency concluded with a breathtaking performance with his band in Bowker Auditorium.

Reaching New Frontiers in Franklin County

This year the Asian Arts & Culture Program focused its educational outreach on a new constituency: nearly 600 Franklin County public school students witnessed the extraordinary Indonesian production Kali Yuga,by Gamelan Sekar Jaya. They enjoyed hearing and playing the gongs, watching the intricacies of the dances, and learning about instrumentation, musical scales, and rhythms from the music director. Dedicated to the victims of the 2002 and 2005 bombings in Bali, the production melded an innovative music score, choreography by Bali’s best dancer, and poetry by Java’s internationally celebrated writer and journalist Goenawan Mohamed.

“It was a very graceful play. The costumes really empha-sized the characters’ roles. The character who caused chaos had a very chaotic hairdo. The people who kept the peace were very clean, their hair was organized”. —Seventh-grade student

Politics and Protest: The 1960s and Now

The Fine Arts Center joined with the Department of History and others to present “Protest and Politics: The 1960s and Now.” Part of the Feinberg Family Distinguished Lecture Series, the program included panels and discussions featuring prominent authors and activists, theater pieces presented by New WORLD Theater and Project 2050, performances by jazz icons Cecil Taylor and Joe McPhee, a documentary film series, and exhibits in the Hampden and Augusta Savage galleries.

The Art of Our Time

The University Gallery continues to be the place where visitors can discover the art of our time and where artists can share their works, their inspirations, and their visions. Internation-ally renowned artists from Switzerland, the U.K., Belgium, New York, Los Angeles, and the Pioneer Valley joined with creative thinkers from a range of disciplines for engaging, timely discussions about their work and the themes and issues it explores. The ongoing series of interdisciplinary events was expanded to bring scholars, poets, musicians, and visual artists together in thought-provoking ways.

Exhibitions this past year included important installations of film, video, painting, sculpture, photography, drawings, and prints. The New England Museum Association recognized University Gallery with two exciting awards: first place for the Beat Streuli / Bruxelles Midi publication and honorable mention for the Fall 2006 newsletter.

As one art faculty member recently put it, the Gallery plays an impor-tant role as catalyst— “concrete evidence that hosting events that bring together people from different departments, programs, institutions, etc., does have direct impact in establishing relationships and perspec-tives that include a more interdepartmental/institutional foundation.” —Art faculty member
