Finding Zabel Yessayan The Watertown Free Public Library, the Armenian International Women's Association and the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research are pleased to announce the screening of "Finding Zabel Yessayan". This short documentary inspired AIWA to translate and publish two of Yessayan's books: The Gardens of Silihdar, a memoir; and My Soul in Exile, a novel. AUTHOR, ACTIVIST, FEMINIST: ZABEL YESSAYAN (1878-1943) was a renowned Ottoman Armenian intellectual and courageous champion for peace, social justice and women’s rights. Her novels, memoirs, short stories, and political essays reflect the catastrophic events endured by Armenians in the Ottoman Empire. During her lifetime, her publications enjoyed enormous popularity, yet very little of what she wrote found its way into English. To introduce English-language audiences to this almost forgotten author and heroine, the Armenian International Women’s Association (AIWA) has arranged for translation of a Yessayan memoir and novel:
The Gardens of Silihdar is a captivating account of the author’s girlhood in Constantinopleand 19th century life in the Ottoman capital. Jennifer Manoukian of Columbia University addscolorful footnotes to further illuminate people, places, and events chronicled here.
My Soul in Exile is a painterly story told by a young Armenian ex-patriate artist who su�ers theheartbreak of returning to the city of her childhood only to find everything changed. The novel isset in the tumultuous turn-of-the-century era in Turkey following the 1909 Adana massacres ofArmenians, prior to the outbreak of World War I. The book is translated by G. Michael Goshgarian.
