Radio Reacts To ACM: Our Country In a world of coronavirus and social distancing, the Academy of Country Music and Dick Clark Productions were forced to postpone the 55th Academy of Country Music Awards until September (CAT 3/16) but embraced the opportunity to debut an at-home special, ACM Presents: Our Country last night (4/5) at 8pm ET on CBS (CAT 3/19). Country programmers and personalities were tuned in and shared their thoughts with Country Aircheck following the broadcast. iHeartMedia KSD/St. Louis APD/MD/afternoon personality Dusty Panhorst: “I’m a huge fan of stripped down, acoustic
performances, and I loved how each artist did more than just performing a song. They spoke from their heart and helped us forget about everything for a little bit; we all needed that. Charles [Kelley] and Dave [Haywood of Lady Antebellum] with their kids jumping in the video was a favorite moment for me, because that is all of us right now. Luke Combs was amazing, as were Old Dominion, Eric Church and the Kenny Rogers tribute. But for a stand
out performance, I have to give it to Kane Brown and John Legend or Tim McGraw. They really stuck with me.” Summit KFDI/Wichita APD/MD/midday personality Carol Hughes: “I got all dressed up and even changed sweatpants for the occasion and watched with my very senior dog and even more senior cat. But, I really wish I had watched with a horse. Seeing Shania singing to her horse tonight was either the best thing on the show or the weirdest, and I honestly can’t decide. Obviously, with it being Palm Sunday, I was most excited about Church. Who am I kidding? Knowing he was going to sing a new song was the highlight of my weekend, and it did not disappoint. Honestly, the show didn’t need Gayle King. Her comments fell flat ... they could have thrown it to each other and it would have been more effective. (continued on page 9)

Finding Silver Linings Radio stations, record labels, artists, songwriters and others are developing new and creative approaches to work, communicate, entertain, uplift and inform in a world of turmoil. Country Aircheck has been littered with those stories over the past two weeks and now takes a deeper look at three in what it’s hoped will become a recurring series on the bright spots where inspiration and perspiration are making life better.
Sipping Lemonade: Academy of Country Music board executive committee members share a pre-show toast to last night’s ACM Presents: Our Country (4/5), which replaced the postponed 55th ACM Awards, now scheduled for Sept. 16. Pictured (l-r, top to bottom) are City National Bank’s Lori Badgett, Country Aircheck’s Chuck Aly, Exec. Producer RAC Clark, UMGN’s Cindy Mabe, Joe’s Live’s Ed Warm, FBMM’s Duane Clark, ACM’s Damon Whiteside, FBMM’s Carmen Romano, Sony’s Ken Robold, FBMM’s Paul Barnabee, WME’s Becky Gardenhire and Essential Broadcast Media’s Ebie McFarland.
A day in the self-isolated life of of a new artist with Monument/Columbia’s Brandon Ratcliff. Every morning I get up, have coffee or peppermint tea with my wife and make a checklist for the day. I stopped going anywhere March 14, so I’m definitely starting to go a little stir crazy, but I’m also really trying to be productive. I walk or drive every day just to get out. I like to do a little workout and have been doing a ton of yoga lately. And I’ve been easing into the Wim Hof method, which is basically about breathing, meditation and the power of cold showers or ice baths, which I did today. I have a love-hate relationship with it. Being in that bath is so painful, but it makes me feel so energized afterward. His app is awesome if anyone is interested. The rest of the day is reading – I’m on Love Does by Bob Goff – playing guitar and writing songs. I’m doing a few virtual writes here and there. Then I’ll play some Xbox until my wife gets home. She nannies for a family we are close with, and they’re the only people we see and vice versa, so her day feel feels relatively normal. I went to their house yesterday and hung out with all of them, which was the first day in three weeks that seemed like before all this. Right now I’m in the middle of my Uncovered project, which is three songs that show my influences and will segue into
the release of my second single “Always Never.” The first cover was “Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac. The second, Stevie Wonder’s “Living For The City,” is out Friday (4/10). What I’m Bingeing: My wife and I tried Tiger King with everyone else and got through about four episodes, but the stuff with people hurting animals ... we had to leave it alone. We switched to some of our go-tos like The Office and Parks & Rec. A couple good movies we’ve watched are Peanut Butter Falcon and Contagion. That one is eerie. For the first 20 minutes, it’s like it’s about what we’re going through right now. And it was made in 2011. First Stop When It Ends: If we’re completely good to go, I’m going to hang with my dudes and write some songs. Thank God we have the technology to see and communicate with each other, but I’m so passionate about songwriting and feeling that vibe in the room. You just don’t get that virtually. It’s like fighting with one hand tied behind your back.

Cope Floats: WCTK/Providence PD Bob Walker came up with the new Wellness 4-1-1 feature by doing something as radical as listening to his own station. “Courtney Kelley does middays,
and I was listening to her thinking about how helpful and on-target some of the things she was saying were,” Walker says. “Sometimes even I forget she’s a clinical therapist.” The thought rattled around in his head until the idea sprang forth in a conversation with the Cat Country Mornings team. “We were in week three of the stay-at-home angle and we were talking about what people really need is ways to address mental health,” Walker
says. “It hit us all at once.” The five-minute feature airs at 8:30am, replays the next morning at 6:15am and is collected into a half-hour weekend program airing on three Hall Communications stations. Topics have ranged from general coping mechanisms to what to tell children about COVID-19. “Courtney is taking her cue from what she’s hearing in her other world as a therapist and also what listeners are emailing her,” Walker says. He also reports strong phone response. Details and audio here. This Is Now: For artists, loss of touring income also comes with downtime and the ability to get in front of more fans – virtually – than was previously common. Scores of artists at all levels have jumped into regular social media concerts, and one of the most prolific has been Triple Tigers’ Scotty McCreery. Bob WalkerBob Walker
Avenue Beat’s Sam Backoff, Savana Santos and Sami Bearden put an industry spin on the artist interview:Bearden: We grew up listening to our hometown station, KICK/Quincy-Hannibal, IL-MO.Hearing ourselves on the radio actually hasn’t happened yet. I imagine one of us will hear, call the other two
while babbling incoherently and cry like babies!Favorite radio tour memory so far is rolling into Boston late and going for pizza and cannolis in North End. It was heaven. Our favorite road companion is our manager Charly Salvatore, because he always picks the best podcasts.Santos: Every time we’re in a truck stop, we get one of those cookies ‘n’ cream milkshakes from those “mix it yourself” things. If I could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, it’d be Kacey Musgraves. She’s the dopest person to ever exist. I would probably order a classic lil’ burger with fries. Our song “Ruin That For Me” is about not letting your ex ruin your life.My last impulse buy was sour skittles, but then I realized that I don’t like sour candy. So, waste of an impulse buy! Backoff: Tim McGraw’s “Live Like You Were Dying” is seriously the best country song of all time, and I stand by that. Every time we go on a really long road trip and start to get sleepy, it’s the song that hypes us back up. We’re scream-singing every word at the top of our lungs. How can you not, though? It’s simply iconic. Road essentials are definitely our headphones, so when Sami starts listening to a weird podcast about the Loch Ness Monster, we can each plug in and tap out. I think I’d want to be stuck in Malibu so I could go to the beach, eat a taco and live my best life. I’m currently obsessed with Love Is Blind on Netflix. It gives me anxiety, but I love it. I live for the drama.

“We started kind of grassroots trying to help a couple stations desperate for content once California locked down,” explains Triple Tigers Dir./National Promotion Raffaella Braun. “Radio didn’t have shows, and we talked internally, including with Scotty’s manager [Triple 8’s] Scott Stem. His background is publicity and he said, ‘This is interesting. If you can give me 24 hours notice, we’ll loop people in and publicize on socials with a link to the radio station’s site.’” For the week of March 23, McCreery did shows for WUSH and WGH/Norfolk, WRNS/Greenville, KNCI/Sacramento, KWJJ/Portland, WGNA/Albany and WQDR/Raleigh, reaching aggregate viewership exceeding 472,000. “Scotty’s loyal fanbase meant value-added eyes and ears for the stations,” Braun says. “We made this a national situation in spreading the love separately and locally. Management’s help and us having a smaller staff made it easier to mobilize this quickly to meet two needs with this cataclysmic event. There was a lot of trial and error with technology, getting time zone messaging consistent and trying to get it up, running and starting on time. But even if we were late off the cue, it was worth it and paid dividends for radio because his audience has been rabid ever since the American Idol days.” Be The Why: The Pensacola area wasn’t the first to have the community show up in droves at hospitals to shine car lights and cheer for healthcare workers from parking lots, but WYCT’s participation shows the power and flexibility of radio. PD/morning host Brent Lane saw the concept on social media. “Somebody posted a video of something similar in another town,” Lane says. “Someone tagged me in a comment and said, ‘It would be great to do this here.’ That was on Sunday night (3/29). By noon the next day we put it on the radio and by 6pm had hundreds of cars at seven different hospitals around the area.” The station invited a local pastor to pray for hospital workers on the air, followed by Thomas Rhett’s “Be A Light” and George Strait’s “I Saw God Today.” An email arrived the next day from a local RN who, understandably, has been anxious in her job and personal life. “I’ve been scared, sad, upset, nervous and downright mad,” Meagan wrote. “Yesterday was a day I had to talk myself down the whole way to work about how I and my team are doing what we can to help our communities and those in need. I had to try to remind myself why I became a nurse. Then I
pulled into the parking lot to see the brigade with the signs and lights, waving and cheering us on. Tears began to stream down my face and I said, ‘This is why.’ So thank you to everyone who showed their support. We talked about you all night and every nurse said it made them feel like a hero and proud to serve you ... I am honored to be a part of this community as well as having the amazing fellow staff beside me in this fight. Cat Country Strong!” Lane says radio still has the power and opportunity to make a difference. “If you’re tied to the community, you can be cathartic. I felt like people really need this. There’s nothing else going on and people needed something good to do. This was one of those ‘get-to’ moments in my career.” –Chuck Aly
Chart Chat Congratulations to Jordan Davis, Royce Risser, Katie Dean, David Friedman, Chris Schuler and the MCA promotion team on landing at No. 1 with “Slow Dance In A Parking Lot.” The song is the third single from Davis’ debut album,
Home State, and is his third career No. 1. Songwriters are Lonnie Fowler and Davis. And kudos to Ashley Sidoti, Chris Palmer and the Valory crew on notching 79 adds for Thomas Rhett & Co.’s “Be A Light” topping this week’s board.
News & Notes Big Machine’s The Cadillac Three are selling a t-shirt and poster with proceeds benefitting their road crew. Details here. Scottish recording artist Johnny Reid has purchased the late Randy Scruggs’ Scruggs Sound Studios and will reopen it in Nashville this spring as Soultrain Sound Studios. I assume they didn’t have time to include anyone singing a Joe Diffie song, but I would have loved to hear that.” iHeartMedia WRBT/Harrisburg, PA PD/morning host Newman: “I liked the authentic realness of the show, both online and on-air. I was really excited to see Chris Young’s tribute to Joe Diffie [during the online pre-show] and how Kenny Rogers would be honored. During the online show, Jake Owen using his garage acoustics was brilliant, and Ashley McBryde was just outstanding. [During the CBS broadcast], I learned that Carrie Underwood could sing the phone book. That’s a book we used to get delivered to the house with everyone’s phone number listed – it was old-people Facebook. This is a great way to have artists connect to fans, but there is a reason concerts and big performance shows have a level of success. The bells, the whistles, the clothes, the lighting and sound, the audience electricity and the artists feeding off that electricity...I miss that and hope we get back to it sooner than later.” Midwest WNWN/Battle Creek, MI Brand Mgr. Miggy Santos: “I watched alone – I’m really taking this social distancing thing seriously – and was most exited to see Kane Brown with
John Legend. That performance gave me goose bumps. I love it when two genres get together and put out a beautiful song, both lyrically and melodically. Of course, I can say the same about Blake Shelton with Gwen Stefani. I was expecting a heartfelt show that would bring the American people together, and it did not disappoint! I got a good laugh from Charles Kelley’s son during the Lady Antebellum performance, and the Kenny Rogers tribute made me tear up. I also
enjoyed Luke Bryan’s setup, because it seemed like he was in a home that would look just like yours or mine. I also learned Gayle King loves country music.” Forever WXCY/Wilmington, DE PD/afternoon host Tyler Daniel: “Florida Georgia Line’s performance of ‘Blessings’ gave
me goose bumps and misty eyes looking around that room and seeing children, wives and even pets. I finally realized this song is for more than just their wives. I also learned that even the artists are doing their part to remain apart from as many people as they can. And, I learned what the interior portions of their homes look like – that’s something not many people get to see! The ACMs made lemonade out of these current lemons, but if
I could have changed anything, I would have enjoyed more ACM performances from previous years. Overall, I’d give it a B+.” iHeartMedia KNIX/Phoenix APD/MD/midday personality Lois Lewis: “Blake [Shelton] and Gwen [Stefani] and their outside setup with the fire, and just how casual they are together while both being superstars, was a standout for me. Of course, the Dierks Bentley performance with his Colorado crow visitor takes the cake. I was also taken with Miranda [Lambert], fresh-faced, with a beautiful setting. Meanwhile, Thomas Rhett felt like he was taking us to church in an unassuming, gentle way. I most looked forward to his performance of ‘Be A Light,’ and it didn’t
disappoint, so I can’t wait to see a full performance with his special guests. But the biggest heartstring moment for me wasn’t even one from this year. It was the ACM Extra with Lionel Ritchie and Kenny Rogers. That performance of ‘Lady’ has always been and will always be one of my favorites. Their camaraderie and joy was a special moment and the perfect way to close out the evening.” Big River WXFL/Florence, AL OM/PD Fletcher Brown: “A chance to see stars dressed like us on any given day, surrounded by family and pets, and being invited into their personal space so they could graciously share not only their music with us, but their hearts, made this feel like a family reunion. Every artist we saw, regardless of what anyone says, can and does sing country music! This needs to become ‘a thing.’ Getting to hear the artists in a way that is not typical in concert or on the radio made some of my friends, who are already fans, love them even more and find new appreciation for artists outside their general taste. During Shania Twain’s performance, I thought the horse was going to eat her guitar. Also, it wasn’t the best room acoustically, but the Old Dominion performance was great – and I’d bet good money they were six feet apart!” Buck Owens KUZZ/Bakersfield MD/afternoon host Kenn McCloud: “I came away from this so incredibly proud to be in this format. I’m confident no other music genre could possibly pull off what we just experienced. ACM weekend is usually all about getting dressed up, patting ourselves on the back and celebrating country music with as much glitz and pyrotechnics as money can buy. But this showed what really matters – the music and the songs. The format spotlighted our artists as people we would all feel comfortable inviting into our homes, and they would feel comfortable inviting us into theirs – as they did last night.” Summit WCYQ/Knoxville MD/afternoon host Opie Joe: “Gayle King seemed out of place and disconnected ... she didn’t even appear happy to be there at times. The pairing of Brad Paisley and Darius Rucker was outstanding, and Tim McGraw singing ‘Humble And Kind’ was something we all needed to hear. But, can we talk about Carrie Underwood with the glass of wine? How many ladies got up and poured a glass after seeing her? Overall, the message was sent that the country music community is with all of us, and we’ll get through this together.” Cherry Creek KIYK & KCIN/St. George, UT PD/morning host Aaronee Cottam: “I wasn’t sure about Gayle King hosting, but when she said, ‘There’s a lot of uncertainty about how long this will last, but one thing we do know is the healing power of music, and nobody, I mean nobody is better at nursing that power than country music artists,’ we pretty much bonded after that. I love that, as an industry, we are trying to adapt and move forward in the face of opposition. Before Lady Antebellum sang from different locations, Hillary Scott said, ‘We are all just doing the best we can,’ and I really felt that. The show felt like a bunch of friends hanging out while the really talented friends shared some uplifting songs. It was less scripted, real and raw like the stuff you only get from performers when you find a good interview online. The landscape is changing, and we crave real connection. The country music industry is leading the way to reconnecting with the audience.” –Monta Vaden
