It was a perfect green plastic Easter egg complete with candy still inside. Clearly it was a leftover from our Easter egg hunt a year or two ago. OK, maybe three. That cold January afternoon I brought my Easter find into the office and placed it on my desk. As I looked at the faded plastic and the disintegrating candy, I had to admit that much like the plastic oval, my Easter spirit had faded and if I’m honest, it might have even been in a state of decomposition too. You know all the excitement that surrounds Easter…Holy Week services, sunrise services and early morning breakfasts, egg hunts and cantatas. We Christians pull out all of the stops at Easter time. So, after we sing at the top of our lungs, "Christ the Lord Is Risen Today" … then what? Where do we go from there? Is the rest of the year just one big letdown? Well, it kind of is… Every day pales by comparison to the resurrection of Jesus. Every other Sunday falls short of Easter Sunday. Yet, that's where we live, isn't it … in the everyday of life? Except for a few high moments here and there, most days are routine and anything but extraordinary. That can be a problem because, if we're not careful, faith can easily amount to little more than going through the motions, where the transforming power of the resurrection is watered down to a historical event, rather than the means of new life. Let’s be honest…here we are, barely a week past Easter Sunday, and, already, the Lilies are beginning to fade, the eggs we’ve dyed are beginning to stink, and the only Easter basket grass left in the house is caught around the beater bar of the vacuum cleaner. We're not the first to experience the post-Easter doldrums, of course. Take the 21st chapter of John. Peter announces to the others, "I'm going fishing." Some take that to mean, "I'm going back to fishing … back to my old way of life, my every day, in other words … to which the others respond, "We are also coming with you." (John 21:3) So, it's a valid question: After Easter, then what? I find the answer in the rest of Peter’s “fishing story”. Right after Peter and the other disciples go back to their every day, Peter has breakfast with Jesus on the shore. It is here that Jesus gives Peter his life’s purpose. “Feed My sheep”, Jesus tells Peter. He leaves Peter in charge of his flock of followers. Peter…a denying friend, a short-tempered follower, and a headstrong leader in whom Jesus clearly trusted. Because of Jesus’ transforming power he restores Peter from his mundane everyday life, to a man filled with “Easter” spirit. A spirit of renewal, new beginnings, hope, and faith in a living savior. Jesus means for us to keep Him in our everyday lives and when we allow the doldrums of this life to get us down we must seek him in the smallest things. Even things like leftover Easter eggs. May you keep the power of Jesus’ resurrection with you throughout this coming year! Deep Creek Friends Meeting April, 2013

Finding My Easter Spirit Back in January, I was walking into my office at the church when I looked down and lying in the pine needles under a bush was an Easter egg. It was a perfect green plastic Easter egg complete with candy still inside. Clearly it was a leftover from our Easter egg hunt a year or two ago. OK, maybe three. “You shall have no other gods before me”…We all recognize that as one of God’s Ten Commandments but I bet many of us did not know that Martin Luther, the father of the Reformation, said that you could not violate the other nine commandments without this one first. You and I create idols in our lives often from things that seem very innocent like…food, entertainment, or family…to things that our culture celebrates like…success, money, or sex. Let’s get together on Wednesday nights to create

a battle plan against these gods that are at war for our attention.

“Gods at War” by Kyle Idleman Beginning April 10th 7:00pm DCF Fellowship Hall Sign up outside the church office. If you have any questions about this

study please contact Georgianne.

New Sermon Series “More Than Conquerors: Plugging Into the Power of God” God gives us the power to conquer the enemies, mountains, the obstacles, the baggage, the issues…whatever the label you choose in our lives. Come worship God with us as we discover His power to conquer our lives biggest obstacles. Series begins Sunday, April 3rd.

S.A.M (Single Again Ministry)

Unfortunately, a good portion of us know the pain of losing a spouse whether through death, divorce, or separation. The “how” we become single again is less important than the way we handle our circumstances. Being alone through this life transition can be difficult at best.

In February, a wonderful group of single ladies came together for lunch on Valentine’s Day. We had so much fun together that we decided to do it again. Out of this experience

together came the idea of S.A.M.

S.A.M is an opportunity for folks to get together once a month for lunch or dinner to

fellowship and support one another. Mark your calendars now…to join us April 24th for lunch at The Third Branch Café, 12:00 noon. If you have any questions about this outing please contact

Georgianne, 408-2677.

Deep Creek guests for Special Music in April

Fourth Sunday, April 28, Jacob Brendle and “Buck” Owens will perform together. They will play a piano/violin duet.

Jacob Brendle is the son of Angie and Jay Brendle. Jonathan “Buck” Owens is Jacob’s music teacher. He and his family live in Boonville. Buck is active in his own church, Boonville United Methodist, where he often shares his gift of music and is also very actively involved with the youth group there. He has been involved in the Boy Scouts (with his son), which is where he and Jacob met.

Buck went to the School of The Arts where he played piano. He loves all different types of music and plays several instruments – piano, guitar, violin to name a few. He has played for several plays such as Annie, performed in Jonesville, and played violin with the Messiah performance at Yadkin Arts Center.

Jacob began taking piano from Buck three years ago and enjoys the lessons. As he teaches, he also allows Jacob to be himself and is always open to things that Jacob wants to try. He teaches other students as well and his passion and love for music shows in his playing.

Second Sunday, April 14, Dancers of Destiny will perform.

Emma Shore, granddaughter of Carol Shore, and Shannon Shore, daughter of Franklin and Anita Shore, are members of this spiritual based group.

Dancers of Destiny are all members of a class with teacher, Mitzi Davis, at Dance with Mitzi Studio. Mitzi explains that she prayed for God to direct her in a way to make a difference in the lives of young people. Out of this, she felt led to begin a special class with Bible study, prayer and worship. From this time together, the Dancers of Destiny movingly portray spiritual stories or thoughts as they perform.

Since beginning, Dancers of Destiny classes have performed for numerous church worship services and special meetings as well as at various community gatherings and Holiday events.

Mitzi continues to be actively involved in Boonville United Methodist Church and is choir director.

April 14 – One of our members, Craig Shore, will be Worship Speaker

Craig is the son of Tommy and Cathy Shore. He served as Youth Director at Winthrop Friends Meeting for some time and was their worship speaker on several occasions. He is now completing his Masters of Arts in College Student Development at Appalachian State and is job hunting, doing some campus interviews. He found it necessary to resign his Youth Director position at Winthrop last fall, concerned that he would be stretched too thin with a new internship at University of North Carolina-School of The Arts in Winston-Salem in their Office of Residence Life/Student Engagement. He has been commuting between there and Boone on Tuesday and Wednesdays. In addition to all his studies, Craig has received special recognitions for his Graduate Assistant work. He is now bragging on his students as the residence hall community that he oversees is currently in 1st place for Hall Of The Year. We look forward to hearing Craig share his message on the second Sunday in April. We Made a Mistake: Last month, we shared the story of the beautiful hymn, Precious Lord, Take My Hand. The story and name of the author was correct, but the person was not.

Some people think this old gospel song was written by the famous big band leader Tommy Dorsey (which we did in the last edition of The Encourager). It wasn’t; the author was named Thomas Andrew Dorsey, and he was the son of a Black revivalist preacher.

Thomas was born in Georgia, fell in love with the blues and began playing piano at a vaudeville theater. Later his family moved to Chicago and he ended up playing in one of Al Capone’s speakeasies.

He was converted in 1921 and began writing gospel songs and trying to get them published. It was discouraging and “I borrowed five dollars and sent out 500 copies of my song, ‘If You See My Savior,’ to churches throughout the country. . . It was three years before I got a single order. I felt like going back to the blues.” Today Thomas A Dorsey is remembered as the “Father of Gospel Music” and the author of hundreds of gospel

songs including his equally famous, “Peace In the Valley.”

Taxes

A tax assessor came one day to a poor Christian to determine the amount of taxes he would have to pay. The following conversation took place:

"What property do you possess?" asked the assessor.

"I am a very wealthy man," replied the Christian.

"List your possessions, please," the assessor instructed.

The Christian said: "First, I have everlasting life, John 3:16

Second, I have a mansion in heaven, John 14:2

Third, I have peace that passes all understanding, Philippians 4:7

Fourth, I have joy unspeakable, 1 Peter 1:8

Fifth, I have divine love which never fails, 1 Corinthians 13:8

Sixth, I have a faithful wife, Proverbs 31:10

Seventh, I have healthy, happy obedient children! Exodus 20:12

Eighth, I have true, loyal friends, Proverbs 18:24

Ninth, I have songs in the night, Psalms 42:8

Tenth, I have a crown of life, James 1:12"

The tax assessor closed his book, and said, "Truly you are a very rich man, but your property is not subject to taxation."

EASTER EGG HUNT A FUN AND LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Around 30 children participated in the Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday. The children traveled to six different stations (which were led by the Youth group) where they learned about the story of the cross. Station 1. Celebrating Jesus’ entry

2. Jesus and the disciples sharing the Last Supper 3. Jesus praying in the Garden 4. Jesus taking our sins 5. Jesus the light in the darkness 6. New Life

We ended in the sanctuary where the children, each placed a beautiful paper flower on the wooden cross as a reminder that Jesus gives us new life. We concluded with a special prayer. This was absolutely a great experience for the children and adults!! Thanks to the Youth group for be willing servants as they led the stations and also as they shared their own personal experiences with the children. They truly are all about JESUS!!! I love you all, Angie

Thanks note: The Christian Education Committee, along with Angie and Jared would like to thank Clark Shore and Ethel Smith for helping fill eggs with candy for the Egg Hunt! The two of them always have a willingness to help and support us in all that we do. Thank you both; we love you!!!

Vance and Emma and Emma were winners of the Easter Candy Guessing Games.

With snowflakes falling, we began March with a mountaintop experience. The Youth group started the month with our annual ski trip in West Virginia. It was a great day with a light snow falling for most of the day. We enjoyed great fun and fellowship

throughout the day, reveling in the wonderful creation of God. The DOGS and Youth also enjoyed their regular meetings

this month. At our first meeting, we talked about the story of the “rich young ruler.” We examined his life and how despite the fact that he had many things going for him, he knew his life lacked something. He sought out Jesus, the good teacher and asked him what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus instructs him to obey the commandments. The rich

young ruler asserts that he has kept the commandments from a young age. Jesus tells him that there is still one

thing he must do and that is to sell all of his possessions, give the money to the poor and come and follow Him. The rich young ruler was sad at Jesus’ response because he was wealthy. Jesus proceeds to tell him that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven. The rich young ruler did several things correctly in this story; he sought after more for his life and he came to the right person to find it. Upon finding the right person, he asked the right question and received the right answer. While we don’t know if the rich young ruler ever took the advice of Jesus, we can learn from his example. There is more to our life than just rules, wealth and good works. We must ultimately seek out Jesus, claiming him as our Savior if we want to inherit eternal life.

Our next lesson came from Acts 3:10. This is the story of Peter and John healing the lame man on their way to the temple to pray. While on their way, they encounter a lame man who is seated daily at the gate of the temple to beg for alms. When approaching the lame man, the disciples are posed with the choice of avoiding the lame man or reaching out to him. While they didn’t have any alms to provide the man, they gave him something greater. They provided him with healing through the power granted to them by Jesus. Like the disciples, we are confronted with choices as to how we react to the needy in our everyday lives. Peter and John set a great example for us to follow by not “missing the trees for the forest.”

The DOGS also enjoyed participating in our children’s revival, while the Youth participated in our adult revival services. Our revival

services were great and the Spirit was definitely present. The DOGS also spent time at the County Park after

getting ice cream! Regardless of the weather, we are waiting for spring to bloom!

It was also exciting to see some of our youth becoming the newest members of our church! God is truly at work at Deep Creek! Blessings, Jared Students & Parents: Start collecting

your pictures for Graduation Sunday, May 19. Need pictures by May 5 of Grades 8,12 and College.
