This year’s recipients are juniors (from left) Jessica Morrison and Courtney Cremerius. A memorial scholarship endowment fund to benefit rising juniors and seniors was established at the Catholic Diocese of Memphis three years ago to commemorate the lives of Herman Albert and Berenice Agnes Remmert for their longstanding commitment to Catholic education. Mr. and Mrs. Remmert’s connection to Catholic education in the Diocese dates to their arrival in Memphis in the 1950s. Over the next 25 years, they supported seven children through their completion of higher Catholic education. To honor their wishes of establishing a long-term legacy to Catholic education their family created this memorial endowment. It is a reflection of their earlier commitment to Catholic education and helping students succeed in Diocese of Memphis Catholic Schools. Students with a 3.0 GPA or above competed for the scholarship by submitting applications, reference letters and essays to the Superintendent of Catholic Schools. From these, prospective recipients were asked to highlight early career interests in a number of key areas. Other relevant factors, such as faith and service, were also considered in determination of award recipients. Two scholarships were awarded this year and these SBA students were selected. 2 - The West Tennessee Catholic Week of April 28, 2016

On May 8 we celebrate Mother’s Day, and as Catholics we dedicate the whole month to our heavenly mother, Mary. And so, May is a natural time to reflect on the irreplaceable role of mothers and all women in our lives. In the weeks following our appearance at the Supreme Court, several women who write about Catholic spirituality mentioned prophetic words of Pope Paul VI to women in reference to our case – words uttered over 50 years ago, but which are, perhaps, more relevant today than ever. “At this moment when the human race is undergoing so deep a transformation, women impregnated with the spirit of the Gospel can do so much to aid mankind in not falling,” Paul VI said at the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council. He continued with this urgent plea: “Women of the entire universe, whether Christian or non-believing, you to whom life is entrusted at this grave moment in history, it is for you to save the peace of the world.” The fact that several women who have no obvious connection to each other, and who are too young to have assimilated Paul VI’s words when they were uttered December 8, 1965, mentioned these words to me, is worth pondering. As I do so, the faces of countless women and girls pass before my mind’s eye, and myriad prayers arise in my heart. I think of the elderly women in our homes around the world, women who have borne children and labored at tasks both great and small, and who now spend their days praying for others’ needs even as their own strength wanes. I think of our female staff members, who spend themselves so generously in the care of the aged and then return home to serve their families, churches and communities. I think of my nieces and other young women who are grappling with so many competing choices and pressures as they

May - the month of mothersSister Constance Veit, LSP

strive to define the priorities and values that will guide their adult lives. I pray for women around the world who have been displaced by war, economic hardships and situations of religious persecution, who struggle mightily to provide their children with the most basic human needs and comforts. I also pray for the brave women who advocate for educational and workplace equality, for victims of trafficking, sexual exploitation and the plague of illegal drugs. As I ponder Paul VI’s call for women to save the peace of the world, I also think of the religious sisters and Catholic laywomen, full of enthusiasm and impregnated with the spirit of the Gospel, who joined us in prayer and walked with us as we prepared for our day in Court, and who gave a stunning public witness to the beauty of the Gospel of Life at the rally outside the Supreme Court. Finally, I pray for the women who protested against us on March 23, that they may come to understand that openness to life, most often expressed through physical motherhood, but also manifest in spiritual, affective and cultural maternity, does not deprive women of their dignity, their potential or their possibilities, but enables them to flourish through the sincere gift of self to God and to others. May is dedicated to Our Lady, the greatest expression of the “feminine genius.” Let us turn to Mary and ask her to intercede for all women. May we cherish our vocation as guardians of life and nurturers of peace. May we step out as unapologetic prophets of a more human culture where each person is seen as the child of God they were created to be and those who are weakest receive the greatest share of our love.

government already works with states to do it. That was discussed in our opening brief. It’s ignored in the government’s brief today because they don’t have a good answer to it.” “In every other context the government will tell you the healthcare exchanges are awesome. It’s never really had an explanation why the only people who it won’t let use its exchanges are the people who work for these religious institutions. The bottom line: the government has said alternatives exist. They have to use them.” “There is a win-win. It’s actually really easy: The government can go do what it needs to do and leave the nuns out of it. And in the end everyone wins because the truth is we are all better off if we live in a world where people like the Little Sisters of the Poor can, inspired by their faith, devote their lives to caring for the elderly poor.” Paul D. Clement of Bancroft, PLLC presented the oral argument before the U.S. Supreme Court for the Little Sisters. Noel J. Francisco of Jones Day LLP also presented arguments on behalf of several ministries. The Little Sisters of

the Poor are represented by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, Locke Lord LLP, and Professor Kevin Walsh of the University of Richmond Law School. Robert Muise of American Freedom Law Center represents plaintiff Priests for Life. David Cortman of Alliance Defending Freedom represents severa l d i f f e rent re l i g ious ministries. For more information or to arrange a follow-up interview with a Becket Fund attorney, please contact Melinda Skea at [email protected] or 202-349-7224. Career Speakers visit OLPH KindergartenBy Phillip Allen and Riley Smith; edited by Kenner Sernel

Throughout the month of March, the kindergarten class at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School and their teacher Mrs. Jessica McLaughlin welcomed parents and family friends to visit the class to talk about their careers. The kindergarteners had lots of speakers talk to them about a wide variety of careers including nursing, speech therapy, communications, engineering, and management. Mrs. McLaughlin said, “The kids were very excited to learn about different careers. We pretended we were scientist, engineers, nurses, pilots, and more.” Mrs. Bethany McFadden is a speech therapist, she did an activity to show how some people have to learn to swallow again. Grant Hubbard talked to the kids about being a pilot. Mr. Craig Unger taught the children all about his job with the Memphis Redbirds baseball and the students even got some cool Redbirds gear to bring home. “The students want to be a variety of things when they grow up such as teachers, scientist, coaches, and more,” commented Mrs. Laughlin.

OLPH student shines in Memphis in May competition By Jack Shaw, Anna Black, and Colin Moore

This year the Memphis in May International Festival is honoring the country of Canada. Seventh-graders at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School participated in the Memphis in May PowerPoint Competition, under the guidance of their social studies teacher, Mrs. Katie Holt. The seventh-graders graders created a PowerPoint presentations about Canada including the following topics: History, Geography, Language, Food, Music/Dance and Religious Beliefs. The PowerPoint and the project had a limit of only 8-10 slides. Mrs. Holt commented, “This competition offered the students a way to summarize their learning about Canada. Their entries were excellent.” OLPH was one of many schools in the Memphis area that participated in the competition. OLPH sventh-grader Lily Hogan received 1st place and won $200!

She was told that she had placed, but she had to go to the ceremony on April 13 to find out which place she had won. She said, “ I was really excited after they announced 2nd and 3rd, because right away I knew I must have gotten 1st. Everybody there was so nice, too!”

6 - The West Tennessee Catholic Week of April 28, 2016

Q. I attended Catholic schools for 12 years, and I view that experience as a prime factor in my success in life. In 1966 when I was confirmed, I took George as my confirmation name. Shortly after that, my class was told that many saints never existed and that George was one of them.

Our teacher explained that George was a folklore hero, a cultural myth much like Paul Bunyan, who existed only in storybooks. (Strangely, though, we were told that we could still pray to him.) I’m wondering whether there is any new thought on this and what the current state of sainthood is for good old St. George. (Owings Mills, Maryland)

A. Whoever told you that St. George never existed was wrong. He was born to a Christian family in Lydda in Palestine in the late third century and became an officer in the Roman army. When the emperor Diocletian decreed that every soldier should renounce Christianity and offer sacrifice to the Roman gods, George refused, the result being that he was decapitated for professing his faith, most likely in the year 303 A.D.

From that time on, Christians revered him as a martyr, and a basilica was later built in his honor in Lydda. That much is factual, but the legend of George as a dragon slayer, a story carried back to Europe by the Crusaders in the 12th century, seems to have little basis in fact.

The confusion over the status of George arises, in part, from a 1969 revision in the church’s liturgical calendar when it was decided that some names should be removed from the calendar of the saints and several others, including St. George, should have their feast day celebrations made optional. That change was the logical consequence of the Second Vatican Council’s determination in its decree on the liturgy that “lest the feasts of the saints take precedence over the feasts that commemorate the very mysteries of salvation, many of them should be left to be celebrated by a particular church or nation or religious community; only those should be extended to the universal church that commemorate saints who are truly of universal importance” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, No. 111).

On April 23, 2013, just a month after his election as pontiff, Pope Francis joined several cardinals in celebrating Mass in a Vatican chapel in honor of his patron saint on St. George’s feast day. (The pope’s baptismal name is Jorge.)---

Reflections OnSunday's Readings

By Jeff Hensley, Catholic News Service

May 1, Sixth Sunday of Easter

Cycle C. Readings: (1) Acts 15:1-2, 22-29, Psalm 67:2-3, 5-6, 8 (2) Revelation 21:10-14, 22-23 (Gospel) John 14:23-29

The college student I was interviewing for an article in the North Texas

Daily at the University of North Texas had retained his Jewish identity when

he converted to an evangelical mode of Christianity.

Ron was very late to our appointment, and I found out why once he

arrived.

People kept stopping him along the way and engaging him in conversations

about his newfound faith.

I’ve always thought it had something to do with a giftedness he had for

sharing the Good News of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection.

In this week’s Gospel, Jesus says to his disciples, “I have told you this

while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will

send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told

you.”

I’ve always thought Ron had a special measure of the Holy Spirit that

caused him to draw people to himself so he could share the wisdom of God’s

love, the wisdom Jesus was talking about here.

On that first meeting with him, we began walking around the journalism

offices on campus where I got to witness firsthand how God used Ron to

communicate his love.

Person after person whom we greeted got into long, deep conversations

about God and Jesus. People with slender faith backgrounds were eager to

discuss faith with this exceptional guy.

While I had started out to get a factual story about Ron, it turned into a

faith-filled feature story that ran in the secular campus newspaper.

Hmm, Holy Spirit at work?

“WE’RE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RAINY SEASON, WHICH COMPLICATES THE SITUATION. ROADS HAVE BEEN WASHED OUT OR BLOCKED BY LANDSLIDES, AND INFRASTRUCTURE HAS BEEN RAVAGED. WE ARE STILL TRYING TO GRASP THE MAGNITUDE AND THE SCOPE. THIS IS NOT OVER. SADLY, RESCUE WORKERS CONTINUE TO FIND BODIES IN THE RUBBLE.”
