Financial Aid for Global Education

In order to make Global Education programs accessible to all students, regardless of financial circum-stance, Duke has established robust financial aid programs to support our students' global academic en-deavors. Duke guarantees to meet 100% of demonstrated need for any Duke-administered (referred to as “Duke-In”) program abroad . Students studying with Duke-approved programs through other institu-tions may have 100% of their demonstrated need met, up to cost of attendance of a semester here at Duke. This means we consider the cost of attendance for your program, including:

Tuition & fees

Housing & Meals

Books & supplies

Visas & vaccinations

Airfare

Other personal/miscellaneous expenses Provided that you are not on a Duke-approved program with a cost of attendance that exceeds that of a semester at Duke, your expected family contribution will not change when you study abroad. See the examples below to deter-mine how your chosen program may interact with your financial aid award.

Example 1: Duke-In Program As you can see in the example above, your family contribution will not change when choosing a Duke-In program, even if the program exceeds the cost of a typical semester at Duke. If the cost of your Duke-In program is less than a semester on campus, your family contribution will not change, and your aid will be adjusted accordingly. When considering non-Duke (also called Duke-approved) programs, your financial aid will vary based on the cost of the program. View the examples on the next page to determine how the cost of non-Duke programs may impact your financial aid.

Example 1: Cost of a Typical Semester at Duke

Tuition, fees, room, and meals: $27,936

Books, supplies, personal, and all other expenses: $1,736

Total Duke Semester Cost of Attendance: $29,672

Example 1: Sample Cost of a Duke-In Program

Financial Aid for Global Education

How do I apply? No separate financial aid application exists for "Duke-In" Global Education programs. Once you commit to your Global Education program, we will adjust your financial aid automatically. What happens to my work study? For students receive need-based aid, work study funding is replaced with grant funding when you study abroad. What's included? We receive program budget information from the Global Education Office. This budget is also availa-ble on your MyGlobalEd application program information page. For the purposes of calculating financial aid, the program budget includes both billed expenses (tuition, fees, etc.), and out-of-pocket expenses (books & supplies, necessary visas & vaccinations, roundtrip airfare, and other personal and miscellane-ous expenses). Your family contribution does not change for participation in Duke-In Global Edu-cation programs. This means the total cost to your family is the same. Once we adjust your financial aid award, you will receive your revised award notice via email. You can always check your financial aid budget and financial aid award via your ACES account.

How do I pay for out-of-pocket expenses? Duke does not issue stipends for airfare or other out-of-pocket expenses. Instead, all grant and loan aid is deposited into your student account, which may reduce your bill to an amount less than your EFC for that semester. This is because we are expecting part of your family contribution to cover other expenses not listed on your bill such as airfare, books, visas, and pocket money. If your grants and loans are more than your billed expenses, then you will be eligible for a refund of the difference. This refund, in addition to your family contribution, should be used to cover these unbilled expenses. How do I get my refund? First, make sure you've set up direct deposit through the Bursar's Office so your refund is deposited di-rectly into your bank account. The Bursar's Office handles all billing and payments, including refunds. If you might be eligible for a refund to help pay for advanced out-of-pocket expenses like airfare and vi-sas, the Financial Aid Office will email you an "Advanced Disbursement" form, which you should com-plete and send to the Bursar's Office for your refund to be processed. This form is automatically emailed to you by the Financial Aid Office once the following are true:

You've completed all paperwork for the Global Education Office

You've committed to a Duke-In Global Education Program

Your financial aid award is complete

Your grants and loans significantly exceed the amount of your bill

Financial Aid for Global Education

Duke-approved semester programs are study abroad or domestic study away programs that are administered by an institution other than Duke University. Financial aid is provided for Duke-approved semester programs based on the cost of the program relative to the cost of a semester at Duke (see the exam-ples provided earlier for further clarification). We've compiled a list of the most requested Global Education information for you below: How do I apply? If you are accepted to a non-Duke Global Education program, you must complete the following steps to have your financial aid award revised for your semester abroad: 1. Confirm with the Global Education Office that your study abroad program of choice has been ap-

proved by Duke University. 2. Once the Global Education office indicates you are committed to a Duke-approved program, the Fi-

nancial Aid Office will automatically send your host institution a consortium agreement. When we re-ceive the completed consortium agreement from your Host Institution, we will confirm the program budget and adjust your financial aid for your semester abroad.

How do I pay for out-of-pocket expenses? Duke does not issue stipends for airfare or other out-of-pocket expenses. Instead, all grant and loan aid is deposited into your student account, which reduces your bill for that semester. If you participate in a Duke-approved program, you will be eligible to receive an advanced refund of all financial aid funds for that term, less the Duke Study Abroad fee and any past due balance. This refund, in addition to your family contribution, should be used to cover all non-Duke expenses. Do I pay my Host Institution? Yes. Students should instruct the Host Institution to bill them directly; it is the student's responsibility to pay the Host Institution directly for all costs related to the academic program. Your refund, in addition to your family contribution, should be used to cover all non-Duke expenses.

You've committed to a Duke-Approved Global Education Program

Your Host Institution completed the consortium agreement

Your financial aid award is complete

Your grants and loans significantly exceed the amount of your bill

Summer Programs:

Financial Aid for Global Education

Students may receive institutional financial aid for up to two summer terms, including summer Duke-In Global Education programs. There is no separate summer financial aid application. Duke need-based aid is only available for students traveling with Duke-In programs; no institutional aid can be pro-vided for non-Duke (sometimes called Duke-approved) summer pro-grams. Summer Enrollment Enrollment in summer school is broken into two terms: Summer Ses-sion I and Summer Session II. Financial aid is awarded on a per-term basis: Summer Session I aid is based on financial aid eligibility for the prior academic year, and Summer Session II aid is based on financial aid eligibility for the upcoming academic year. For this reason, Sum-mer Session II aid awards CANNOT be processed until your renewal financial aid application is complete. Summer Cost Determination The cost of your Duke-In Global Education program is determined by the Global Education Office and is available via your MyGlobalEd program application information. If your financial aid award has already been finalized, you can also view your financial aid budget on ACES. Summer Family Contribution The family contribution for Summer I is determined by taking 25% of the prior academic year's parent contribution. For example, if the parent contribution for the academic year just ending was $10,000, the Summer I contribution would be $2,500. The family contribution for Summer II is determined by taking 25% of the upcoming academic year's parent contribution. Applications for financial aid for the upcoming academic year must be complete before any Summer II aid can be awarded. Summer Financial Aid Awards The summer financial aid award is built the same way as the academic year award: Cost of attendance - Family contribution Demonstrated need 100% of demonstrated need is met by need-based scholarships and a small loan. Estimating Your Award If you're participating in summer Global Education program and need to commit to your program be-fore receiving your summer financial aid award, estimating your aid is as easy as 1-2-3: 1. Retrieve your cost of attendance by logging into your MyGlobalEd program application and clicking the link for your program's budget. This should include all billed expenses (tuition, fees, etc.) and out-of-pocket expenses (airfare, books, personal expenses, etc.).

Page 7: Financial Aid for Global Education Programs

2. Determine your summer EFC. This is done by taking 25% of your current parent contribution. Note: if your family's financial circumstances have changed significantly, please realize that this will have an im-pact on your Summer Session 2 EFC. 3. Subtract your summer EFC from your cost of attendance. This is how much your summer financial aid award is estimated to be. Due to the busy financial aid application season, the Financial Aid Office will not be able to provide indi-vidual estimates for summer financial aid. Advanced Refunds If your financial aid significantly exceeds your billed charges, you may be eligible for a refund to help pay for advanced out-of-pocket expenses like airfare and visas. To facilitate this, first make sure you've set up direct deposit through the Bursar's Office so your refund is deposited directly into your bank ac-count. The Bursar's Office handles all billing and payments, including refunds. If you might be eligible for a refund, the Financial Aid Office will email you an "Advanced Disbursement" form, which you should complete and send to the Bursar's Office for your refund to be processed. This form is automatically emailed to you by the Financial Aid Office once the following are true:

You've committed to a Duke-In Summer Global Education Program

Your summer financial aid award is complete

Your grants and loans significantly exceed the amount of your bill Summer Earnings Expectation Students participating in Global Education programs for one or more summer terms may be eligible to have their summer earnings requirement (the basis for the Student Contribution) for the academic year replaced with grant funds. Eligibility for the grant replacement will be determined by the Financial Aid Office and automatically awarded, and is dependent upon federal financial aid eligibility (based on the FAFSA).
