The Western Gateway design project called for an innovative solution to the task set out. The Rhythm Gate fulfils this role exactly, delivering a meaningful and inviting form which showcases the growth and culture that Wyndham City has become known for.

The series of sculpted arches within the design emulate the features of a literal gateway into Wyndham by creating a sense of transition and arrival. The de-sign derives its influence from the theme of rhythm and the synergy it shares with growth and dynamism.

The final outcome of this careful selection of information and design processes delivers an immersive experience which is both memorable and reflective of Wyndham’s character.

Travellers experience a series of sculpted arches which illustrate a storyboard which reflects a sense of progressive development synonymous with Wynd-ham’s development. The gateway is viewed at a rate of 0.8 seconds per arch, allowing travellers to experience the design at a constant rhythm, subtly im-parting a sense of immersion and entrance.

The structure of the Rhythm Gate is composed primarily by a set of Pratt trusses on the sides. Their sizes are altered to respond to their position in the structure. To bridge the gap between the sides of the structure, two universal beams are used which are also braced laterally. The univer-sal beams are also the elements from which the Perspex cut profiles are suspended. To keep anchored to the ground, deep pad footings are used on either side.

design charachteristicsOne of the objectives in the design intention was to represent Wyndham City’s characteristics in terms of loca-tion and context. As Wyndham City lies between Melbourne and the You Yangs, these landmarks were used to influence the design outcomes.

The profile of the You Yangs progres-sively morphs to represent the profile of the Melbourne city skyline, demon-strating Wyndham’s contextual rela-tionship to its surrounding area. This morphing of forms symbolically rep-resents the fast paced development and urban progression of Wyndham City.
