The opening 4 notes have become one of the most iconic passages in music culture. The 1st and 3rd movements are in C minor and the 2nd is in A flat major. But the 4th and final move- ment is in C major (the parallel major), which is very unexpected for a piece that began in C minor, however Beethoven himself said, "Joy follows sorrow, sunshine --rain." This arrangement presents the triumphant finale for string orchestra. The lengthy movement (around 9:00) is condensed to about 4:30, but none of the thematic material is sacrificed. Students will get an insightful experience of playing this important work. The coda of the finale in the original work is extremely long, establishing the final cadence in C major that ends with 29 measures of C major chords. To put this in proportion for this arrangement, this has been shortened and also includes an optional cut if the conductor wishes to shorten it even more.
