The Bachelor o ScienceThe Bachelor o Science (BS) degree is only availablein Sound Engineering, and is intended or thosestudents who seek rigorous proessional training inacoustics, the physics o sound, sound engineering,computer science, and sound recording. The Bachelor o MusicThe Bachelor o Music (BM) degree is the mosttraditional degree oered by the School o Music,
Theatre&Dance.Approximately75%ofthecoursework o a BM is in music, while the balanceis completed in other areas, most typically in liberalarts courses within the College o Literature, Science,and the Arts. Undergraduate Core Curriculum
Every undergraduate student enrolled in either aBachelor o Music (BM) or Bachelor o Musical Arts(BMA) degree will take a curriculum that is designedto provide a comprehensive oundation in basicmusicianship skills. Typically, the coursework or therst two years in these degree programs is ocusedon completing this Core Curriculum, although somerequirementsmaybemetthroughprociencyexaminations, while others may be taken out osequence:

The Bachelor o Musical Arts andBachelor o Theatre ArtsThe Bachelor o Musical Arts (BMA) and Bachelor
o Theatre Arts (BTA) degrees are interdisciplinarydegrees. The overall balance o coursework in thesecurricula is evenly divided between music or theatrestudies and academic coursework. While thesedegrees include some level o proessional training,they are intended to allow a student wider exposureto the liberal arts within the scope o a traditionalour-year program. As such, they tend to be mostappropriately selected by those students whointend to pursue studies in music or theatre with an
academic emphasis, or who wish to consider careerpaths other than perormance upon graduation.
The Bachelor o Musical Arts degree allows studentsthe fexibility to develop secondary (cognate) eldso interest through the design o a large part o theirprograms within stated guidelines and throughconsultation with a aculty adviser. Applicants areasked to explain their educational and proessionalgoals in the application.
Dual Degree ProgramsA variety o degree programs are available at theUniversity o Michigan that allow students to increasethe academic options available to them. The mostcommon way to do this is either by enrolling in theBachelor o Musical Arts (BMA) degree or by choosingto pursue a dual-degree program with another schoolor college within the University.

School scholarships are merit-based, need-inormed. This means that while encouragingand rewarding artistic and academic excellenceis our top priority, we also consider theextent o the students access to additionalfnancial resources.
The School o Music, Theatre & Dance commitsover three million dollars annually in scholarships orundergraduates. You will be considered or School
scholarships i you submit all the application oradmission materials by the deadline or your program(typicallyDecember1),submit the Free Applicationor Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and CSS Profle,complete the audition/interview no later than March12,2010,andaresubsequentlyofferedadmission.
Scholarship decisions are based on a combinationo the students artistic and academic merits incombination with the nancial need o the student
asindicatedbythe2010FAFSAandCSSProle.Currently, we are unable to award scholarships to allwho apply, yet we make every eort to assist as manystudents as possible to attend the School.
The Department o Theatre and Drama and theDepartment o Dance administer their scholarshipprograms separately. Scholarships or the Departmento Musical Theatre and all the music departments othe School are administered by the Associate Dean or

The School o Music, Theatre & Dance is locatedin a park-like setting on the Universitys NorthCampus. The distinguished Earl V. Moore Building,designed by the renowned Finnish architect Eero
Saarinen, contains two rehearsal/concert halls,orty-ve perormance teaching studios, eighteenclassrooms, orty oces, one hundred twenty practicerooms, a computer lab with orty stations, and otherspecial acilities or piano, harp, organ, harpsichord,ortepiano and percussion practice. The School oMusic, Theatre & Dance is also home to one o theoremost music libraries in the United States.
The University o Michigan maintains state-o-the-art
computing resources or all students, and the Schoolo Music, Theatre & Dance provides rich opportunitiesor applications o technology in the perormingarts. Facilities or music composition, recording andproduction include the Music Listening Lab, theMusic Technology Lab, the Surround Lab, the VRoom,the Electronic Music Studios and a state-o-the-artAudio Studio.
The Margaret Dow Towsley Center contains theBlanche Anderson Moore Hall, an organ recital hallwith a magnicent tracker-action organ modeled onthe organs o Silberman; the McIntosh Theatre, avocal arts rehearsal and perormance space; and theStearns Collection o Musical Instruments.

All composition applicants must perorm an audition ontheir principal instrument or voice (guidelines are listedunder the appropriate department). In addition, submitup to seven scores o your musical compositionswith recordings o each work on indexed compact disc.We do not accept MP3 disks or data CDs. All musicalstyles are welcome, though it should be noted that thedepartmental curriculum is geared toward composingor classical instruments and ensembles.

AuditionRequirements
All applicants will demonstrate their skills inmainstream jazz according to the guidelines below.
Applicants with original compositions, or who areinvolved in creative areas that may not all within thecategories listed, are strongly encouraged to presenttheir work at the audition.
Along with the jazz audition, a classical audition isrequiredforJazzandContemporaryImprovisationand or the BMA degree. List both classical andjazz repertoire in your audition repertoire, as wellas on your comprehensive repertoire list. Theclassical audition will be played or the appropriateperormance aculty, ollowing the standardaudition parameters.
Applicants auditioning by CD must demonstrateimprovisational skills on their recorded audition.
Note to guitar applicants: There are two jazzdegree options or guitarists: the BFA Jazz Studiesand the BFA Jazz and Contemplative Studies.Because we do not oer classical guitar, Jazz andContemporary Improvisation and the BMA arenot available to guitarists.
Note regarding jazz voice: We do not oer a programo study in jazz voice. Students in other programs,such as voice perormance, are able to perorm withjazz combos and ensembles by audition.
Drum set players will be asked to demonstrateprociency in the ollowing areas: Brushes (slow,mediumandfastswing),trading4sand8s,Aro-Cuban and Brazilian grooves such asthemambo,chachach,songo,12/8,partidoalto, samba, and the bossa nova. Students will also be asked to do simple hand/oottiming and coordination exercises, as well as somesight-reading. Perormance o scales or melodies ojazz tunes on any mallet keyboard instrument such as
