Final Trailer Analysis Divergent

Identifying With The Audience The location of a derelict New York is first shown though the

establishing shot that zooms in so we can see the details of the derelict city. This establishes a post-war genre set in the future after devastation to the city.

Lighting suggests a sci-fi element to the, how the chair in the centre of the one shot is lit up.

Females might identify with the trailer more as it focuses around the female lead . Tris is represented as a strong fearless lead. The trailer also showed a strong male character who males could identify with but females will also see as appealing.

A character in the trailer that could be relatable is the mother figure, she’s shown as protective and wants what’s best for her child. This is something the audience will relate with their own parental figures.

Character Relationships within Narrative Relationships are a crucial part of the trailer. The first one that is clear to see is the difference in

groups, called factions, established through clothing.

There is also a relationship established between the female lead and the main male. You can see see this through the long shot of the two characters on the balcony.

You can also see a friendship established between two female characters when they jump together.

The editing/ effects and shots To help us identify with the characters mid-shots are often used

when they are shown. This helps us to see and relate with emotion.

Establishing shots are used so we can put context to the narrative and understand what’s going on.

A long wide shot is used of all of the people located in the derelict New York. There are different groups which is represented through costume, different faction is a different colour. This raises questions to an audience and makes them want to know more about why they are grouped.

Action shots are used increasingly towards the end as well as through out to build tension and leave the audience with a lot more questions. It adds more of a sense of urgency to her survival and you want to know who survives by the end of it.

Code of Enigma How is Tris Divergent? What is real? What is the test? What are the leaders doing? Why does she end up in dauntless? Why doesn’t he trust anyone? Why are there restrictions as to who you can be? Why do divergents threaten the system? Who and why are they fighting?
