Iwelcome you all to the New Year 2016!

It is through God's blessings and hard work that we have come this far.

It is imperative to note that we have resumed milling after a successful annual maintenance exercise. This routine exercise is meant to improve on efficiency and reduce downtime brought about by breakdowns.

In the New Year, we have high expectations that we will continue to work well and harmoniously with all our stakeholders in order to achieve our targets and fulfill our corporate vision and mission.

On that note, we have been talking to our farmers to open bank accounts so that we can make their payment process fast and easy. We encourage them to do so quickly to enhance efficiency of payment. The company also intends to reduce the payment period to two weeks to enable our farmers enjoy the benefits of their produce early enough.

We are also happy with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries and the Government of Kenya for the immense support they extended to us during the challenging periods we experienced in business. Let us all renew our commitment to work harder and strive to deliver on our common goals and objectives as we steer this company to greater heights and success.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish to assure all the stakeholders of our support and co-operation.

Finally, let me take this opportunity to wish the Board of Directors, Management, Staff and all our valued stakeholders a happy and prosperous new year 2016.

God bless Nzoia Sugar Company as we continue sweetening Kenya!!!

I take this opportunity to welcome you to yet another issue of Sukari News Magazine. Nzoia Sugar Company has tirelessly worked to ensure that the financial year 2014/15 is a productive

year by surpassing the targets and goals set.

We have endevoured to offer better services by constantly filling the skills gap. In this regard, I am proud that ICT function has continually strived to ensure data information security and accessibility. Automated integration between the Smart weigh system fitted at the weighbridge and the Ebizframe Agriculture Management System have hastened information exchange between the two systems thus ensuring data accuracy. The Daily Production Report from the factory can now be accessed directly by relevant personnel. An exclusive company email system (zimbra) is in use specifically for sharing confidential information among staff members.

We are glad that the annual factory maintenance was successfully completed and the performance of the factory improved. We have acquired new branding machines for production team and we are optimistic our branded products will continue being more visible in various outlets in Kenya. This will also work towards ensuring that our customers and stakeholders recognize that we are the producers of the quality sugar in the stores hence earning us the much deserved publicity enabling us to stay globally competitive.

The company supports the neighbouring community through Corporate Social Responsibility programs including donations, infrastructure development, health, education, youth and sports among others.

Have a blessed year 2016!

Thank you.

GLOBAL NEWS

Following the shortlist, the Company is allowed to use the Institution of

Chemical Engineers (IChemE) badge of

quality and excellence in all its promotional

material as an endorsement by IChemE

Nzoia Sugar Company was a m o n g t h e c o m p a n i e s shortlisted for the prestigious

IChemE global award for the cost reduction innovative idea dubbed 'gravitational milk of lime dosing system'.

Process engineer brings IChemE 2015 to Nzoia Sugar By Florence Mutinda

NSC was the only company in Kenya and in the African continent to be shortlisted for this year's prestigious award under the industry project.

Following this development, the company has acquired a badge of quality that the company is endorsed to use in its products and stationery forever.

In this innovation, Nzoia Sugar Company's Process Engineer Mr. So lomon Bhaddy Amwayi re -engineered the company's gravitational liming dosing system used in the early stages of sugar processing.

This innovation has subsequently led to at least a 20% drop in lime usage and an equal drop in energy and maintenance costs saving the company KES 2.5m (US$24,000) in the past year (2014).

Liming i s a process in ju ice purification/treatment where hydrated lime is introduced into sugarcane extracted mixed juice in the form of Milk of Lime, (MOL) to neutralize the acids in the juice and react with phosphoric acid to produce a precipitate.

Conventionally, dosing of the prepared lime is done by a pumping system. In this innovation however, there is a switch from pumped to gravitational dosing system.

Mr. Amwayi, a P r o c e s s E n g i n e e r i n g Superintendent at NSC with over 8 years' experience in the chemical engineering field was part of a host of engineers from around the world nominated for their chemical engineering innovations under the industry project category which attracted 6 entries. Over 500 entries were presented by engineers representing 40 countries in 5 continents. Out of the 500 entries, only 200 were shortlisted in the 17 categories namely; water management, energy, young researcher, food and drink, palm oil, outstanding achievement, research project, education and training, oil and gas, industry leader, business start-up, resource poor technology, process safety, sustainable technology, innovative product and industry project.

16 experts pooled from different parts of the world and different sectors of the economy formed the panel of judges.

The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) is the global professional membership organisation for people with relevant experience or an interest in chemical engineering.

Founded in 1922, it currently has over 40,000 members across 120 countries with offices in Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and the UK.

Mr. Solomon Amwayi at the IChemE award ceremony

I am a chemical & Process Engineer by profession, working as a process engineer with over 8 years '

experience. My journey to Birmingham, UK was a great experience. I had the

opportunity to visit the IChemE headquarters in the UK and attend the award dinner at the Hilton Birmingham, situated at the National Exhibition Centre. UK business and finance journalist, and award winning engineer, Steph McGovern hosted the Global Awards on 5 November 2015. Steph is a regular presenter and host on television and radio reporter who reports on major economic, financial and business news on programs including BBC TV's Breakfast.

This was the first appearance of a Kenyan company for such an award. Under the Industry project category, NSC was the only company representing Africa.

I would encourage the company to support future innovations for improvement.

Originality, innovation, potential or achieved technical and/or business success, impact on the environment, impact on stakeholders and wider application were key elements used to choose the winners of the event.

I am happy that Nzoia Sugar Company was awarded a certificate and a badge of quality that the company is endorsed to use in all its products and stationery forever.

Let's all work towards maintaining NSC on the global map and market this company beyond our borders.

My experience at Birmingham UK for the IChemE Award Ceremony

I had the opportunity to represent not only Nzoia Sugar Company but also Kenya as a Country and Africa as a continent at the prestigious ICHEME

Global awards.

During the tour, the Chairman of the Board

assured the management team that

the Board would give adequate support to

ensure factory output surpasses the outlined

targets

The Board of Directors toured the factory to determine its suitability to resume operations after a

month's break for annual maintenance.

The Board under the leadership of the Chairman Hon. Joash Wamang'oli inspected all the relevant operational areas of the factory on 4th December, 2015.

The Factory Manager Mr. David Mulungwa while taking the Directors through the factory mills, confirmed that the factory will undergo various trial tests in the course of the week before resumption of the milling process.

Wamang'oli said the Board is impressed by the progress made and was undoubtedly convinced that the factory will run at its optimum after the annual maintenance program.

He added that the Company has the best m a n a g e m e n t t e a m c a p a b l e o f

t r a n s f o r m i n g c h a l l e n g e s i n t o opportunities.

Mr. Mulungwa also assured the Board that most of the maintenance work had been adequately undertaken and was confident to state that the maintenance project was 95% complete and expressed satisfaction tha t the work was under taken professionally.

He emphasized that the factory has to undergo maintenance annually to increase throughput since the boiler system efficiency dwindles after 12 months operations without maintenance. The Factory Manager added that el-nino rains this year posed a challenge on the effectiveness of the maintenance programme and added that the third line branding machine is in the process of being installed and will later be commissioned after inspection to enhance our production output to meet branded sugar market demand for various quantities.

Members of the Nzoia Sugar Family pledged to serve the Lord together as a team and

trust God to help them manage the affairs of the company.

Following a successful maintenance program, Nzoia Sugar Company resumed milling on the 21st of December 2015.

The management and staff dedicated the plant to God in a ceremony held at the factory premises just before the official opening of the plant.

During the maintenance, the engineers installed a Rotary Juice Screen, retubing of boilers, modification of juice filtration system, balancing sugar dryer and juice heater retubing to allow for proper heating of juice to improve juice clarification and subsequently improve on sugar recovery.

The speaker of the day quoted the book of Joshua 24:15 which talks about Joshua

who was chosen by God to take over the leadership of the children of Israel to the promised land of Canaan. Joshua made this declaration when he saw the Israelites begin to serve idols. Amidst the pressure of idol worship from all quarters, Joshua declared that together with his family, they would serve the Lord.

The acting managing Director, Mr Godfrey Wanyonyi, thanked the engineers for the good work and urged the employees to be good ambassadors.

The Nzoia branch secretary KUSPAW Macdonald Wamocho, thanked the management for their support and employees for their hardwork and diligence as he urged the management to work on the challenges affecting the employees.

The factory manager Mr. Mulungwa emphasized the importance of team work since all players in the company are equally important because they all contribute to the smooth operations of the company.

Part of the ICT strategy is to deliver mobile

based applications to enable farmers receive alerts on relevant field activities and services offered by the company

The ICT department of NSC has been working hard to ensure that the company has avenues enabling it to

stay competitive in both local and global platforms. An interview with Systems Analyst, Louis Shitandi, helped shed light on some of the elements of the ICT strategy that the department has achieved in the financial year 2015/2016 and plan to achieve in future.

In order to ensure data security and systems availability, a modern primary data center has been set up at the ICT offices with a secondary data center being set up at the Company guest house to act as a backup. Network infrastructure having wireless access points in the various office blocks has been laid out to support connectivity to the data and systems in the secured data center so that employees can enjoy continuous availability of ICT systems and services.

“Information security, timeliness, availability and accessibility are key in our strategy,” says Mr. Shitandi, “and on top of a robust network infrastructure we intend to avail innovations to meet these needs for competitive advantage.”

A r e - d e s i g n e d c o m p a n y w e b s i t e (www.nzoiasugar.co.ke) has been delivered for easy information dissemination to the public which will allow access 24 hours a day. The website conforms to current web design standards to assure not only adequacy and relevancy of the information presented but also a pleasant user experience Automated integration between the Smart weigh system at the weighbridge and the Ebizframe Agriculture Management System has speeded up the information exchange between the two systems and ensured data accuracy. The Daily Production Report from the factory can now be accessed directly by relevant personnel owing to a web-based data capture and reporting system that has been developed in-house, tested successfully and is in the final stages of roll-out. “We have worked closely with Desmond Obura of the Factory Chemistry Lab to develop this system and intend to encompass the other numerous reports within the business to reduce costs on paper by availing information online.” “Our aspiration is to deliver a mobile-based applications to the farmers” he went on to say. The applications will enable farmers receive alerts on relevant field activities and services

offered by the company and provide them with a platform to raise their complaints that will be accessed directly by the management.

The department aspires to in future provide automated data capture forms that the NSC staff can be able to fill even from the field via mobile devices. Their overall goal is to work towards actualizing the company's mission and vision by presenting a professional and credible image geared towards emphasis of our corporate identity.

Farmers Have been warned against selling cane to poachers.

While addressing stakeholders at Mabanga Agricultural Training Centre on 19th November, 2015 Area Manager Mr. Joab Omulubi warned farmers that poachers only exploit them economically.

Omulubi also reminded the farmers that the company normally invests a great deal in cane development. “We expect to recuperate our costs before we pay farmers. Any effort to deny the company cane denies us income,” he added.

The theme of the event was “Diversification of

Products in order to enhance Technology in

Agriculture and Industry for Food

Security and National Growth”.

Omulubi compared a Poacher to the devil who

only comes to tempt you when you are about to

succeed. “A poacher doesn't make roads,

unlike Nzoia, doesn't give back to the society

in any way and has also tightened their

weighing scale,” he said. The company has in

the past lost a lot of cane to poachers and this

has necessitated vigorous media campaigns to

deal with this vice.

The farmers requested the Company to

diversify as a means of generating additional

income to gain a solid financial base to ensure

sustainability of the Company in the highly

competitive sugar industry. The farmers also requested the NSC to harvest

and pay cane farmers on time and also supply

different varieties of sugarcane to boost

productivity in their farms.

Communications officers must interpret

contexts to management and must speak the language of

business in the institutions that they

work in

The Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK) supported by the Global Alliance for Public Relations &

Communication Management (GA) hosted the premier world conference on public relations in emerging economies (WCPREE) on November 15 – 18, 2015 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

Nzoia Sugar Company sent two officers from the Public Relations Department to represent the company at the conference which attracted over 400 PR practitioners and academics from across the globe. Mr. Awino Gilbert the Public Relations Manager and Miss. Florence Mutinda, a Public Relations Supervisor attended the conference which provided a platform for them to network, exchange ideas and gather knowledge on the latest trends on Public Relations in emerging

economies and how PR can play a positive role to bring about social and economic change while aiding to alleviate particular challenges faced by emerging economies.

The conference brought together practitioners and academics from across the globe to look at particular challenges faced by emerging economies in an evolving and continually changing environment.

The international communication community led by a host of thought leaders and speakers debated topics such as the role of emerging economies in the global economy, the role of public relations and technologies in emerging economies, how to achieve sustainable development, stability and wellbeing in emerging economies and globally.

The conference included sessions of ideas and innovations sharing in a mix of plenaries, panel opinions and workshops, research colloquium showcasing academic research to both academics and practitioners, master classes for personal and professional development, tours and networking opportunities, welcome reception and gala dinner and awards ceremony.

Cheryl I Procter- Rogers from Lincolnshire, Illinois an accredited Senior PR Consultant and a certified Master Coach concluded the afternoon session with a powerful presentation on the power of communication in leadership. She persuaded communicators to be consistent in their leadership styles and be ready to give direction without emitting negativity. She urged communicators to always be present during key decision meetings in the boardroom and maintain behaviours that are consistent with the practice.

The 15th edition of the PRSK awards saw a host of local organizations drawn for the banking industry, legal fraternity, energy sector and PR consultancies receive top honour for their work

In a bid to retain members, Kenya National Secretaries Association (KENASA) has intensified efforts to improve performance

of its members through trainings on emerging issues.

The workshop held at Mombasa was attended by 15 secretarial staff from Nzoia Sugar Company.

Those of us who were privileged to participate in this forum learnt quite a lot and it is our sincere appeal for management to continue sponsoring us for such fora on rotational basis.

The conference covered other areas such as stress management, personal growth, governance and retirement. The members were urged to act as the face of their departments and to understand their bosses for smooth work flow.

This workshop was necessitated by the recent approval by the Public Service Commission (K) for Administrative Services Personnel (former Secretaries). This scheme comes with a number of new requirements including change of titles for Secretaries. The scheme also envisages a new dimension in terms of the

role of Secretaries in offices.

The forum was attended by 3,500 members and distinguished speakers in the relevant areas.

Mr. Alfred Walioli was born in 1958. He joined Nzoia Sugar Company in December, 1978 where he worked as drainage casual.

His duties involved opening trenches in the nucleus estates, weeding four bushy lines of cane (about 850m) in a day, which had to be completed before payment. His starting salary was Kshs. 80.00 per month.

Mr. Walioli says he was happy with the job he had been offered since it enabled him to cater for his small family and there was no other source of income.

However, he says working at the drainage was a challenge since it required perseverance. Since there was no means of transport to work that time, he had to walk to his place of work. On 10th July, 1979 Mr. Walioli was confirmed on permanent contract as a cane cutter/weeder. His roles were harvesting cane and weeding sugarcane.

In 1983, he was successfully interviewed for the post of Field Instructor and was posted to Milo Centre.

Mr. Walioli was later promoted to position of clerk 01 in outgrowers Ledger office under Finance department. 1986 he joined Kenya Polytechnic where he studied an accounting course for one year and passed well.

He did an interview for the position of Bursar and successfully got it. In 1993 he was transferred on promotion to management post (MG 9) as Wages Supervisor and again moved to cash office as a Cashier in 1994.

In 2007 he was transferred back to Debtors as a Supervisor. He was lucky because he was appointed on acting capacity as a Debtor's Accountant where he performed his duties successfully for 6 years.

Mr. Walioli was then posted to OGL as Assistant OGL Accountant. He has worked as Assistant OGL Accountant from the year 2009 to date.

The Ledger Accountant explains that he has managed to succeed because of his spirit of hard work and having good relations with all kind people within the organization. Mr. Walioli is married to two wives and they are blessed with 14 children who are all alive. “I have managed to take good care of my children by ensuring they receive quality education and some are already working, others are in universities and secondary schools,” says Mr. Walioli.

He further says he is happy with the family because each member is determined to achieve in life.

The OGL Accountant says his health has been good since he was born but in 1995 he realized he had a breathing problem which required him to sleep in a spacious and well ventilated room to breathe comfortably. One day he decided to walk on foot from Webuye to Nzoia Sugar and when he slept that night he discovered the problem was partly addressed. From then on, it became a routine for Mr. Walioli to walk daily and his health problem was totally under control.

He says walking on foot has been of benefit to him because he sleeps well, rarely falls sick, he has managed to control his blood pressure, remain physically fit and stress free.

“Most office people are sick because they don't exercise since they think it's not important.'' Says Walioli. He urges people especially those who work in the offices to exercise regularly because it assists in curbing most illnesses.

Walioli's typical day begins at 5am, when he wakes up, prepares himself and sets off to work on foot from Webuye to Nzoia Sugar Company a distance of about 21 kilometers. He then goes to the Company estate house where he also has a family, to take a shower and reports to the office by 6.30 a.m.

The man who prefers walking to taking a lift says that he will continue walking until he clocks 100 years. He says he is very happy with Nzoia Sugar which has acted like his mother and father for the last 37 years he has worked for enabling him to cater for his large family and to acquire property.

Mr. Walioli who is set to retire in December, 2017 urges NSC management to consider giving him a promotion so that when he retires he can have a good pension package.

The Accountant who is referred to by many as 'Papa' and 'Kuka' advises the young people who are seeking employment not to be choosy but accept any opportunities they get in order to gain considerable experience. “Nataka kuwaambia vijana wote wenye wanajiunga na kiwanda wawe na bidii, wajitolee, wawe waaminifu katika kazi ndipo wafaulu maishani,” asema Walioli.

He further advices them to remain dedicated at all times, patriotic to the organization and concentrate on what they are doing to succeed in life.

At 57 years of age, Mr. Walioli walks

over 21 kilometers to his work station. He

Present were Mr. George Nyiera the NSC ADA chairman, NSC ADA secretary Mr Josephat Oundo, NSC ADA organizing Secretary Mr. Augustine Alawi, and Mr. Rambanya the agriculture service representative.

Oundo enlightened the staff on available rehabilitation centres in the country. The sugar industry in Kenya has been granted a one-year COMESA safeguard extension to February 2017.

The safeguard which was set to expire in February 2016 was extended following a special requirement to revamp the Kenya sugar industry competitiveness in readiness for cheaper imports from Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).

The extension is a big win for Kenya but also a call for fast- tracking of reforms in our sugar

sector

Cabinet Secretary for Industrialization Mr. Adan Mohamed said the extension will give ample time to Kenya to finalize the privatization process of the five state sugar factories.

The Privatization Commission on Friday 4th Dec, 2015 advertised for an expression of interest by strategic investors to acquire the 51 percent stake in each of the five state owned sugar firms by 26th February 2015. The five state-owned sugar companies slated for privatization are Nzoia Sugar Company, Sony Sugar Company, Chemelil Sugar Company, Muhoroni Sugar Company and Miwani Sugar Company. Muhoroni and

Miwani sugar Companies are currently under receivership.

The reforms in the Kenya sugar industry including privatization are aimed are making the industry competitive.

Kenya produces about 600,000 tonnes of sugar a year against an annual consumption of 800,000 tonnes. The deficit is covered by strictly controlled imports from COMESA countries.

Seven common traits of effective leaders By Apostle Moses S. Ekiring

Since my research is more subjective than not, I don't want to suggest that this list of personality characteristics is

exhaustive. Nor do I want to suggest that the order is one of a particular priority. But enough disclaimers here's my list:

Effective leaders are loyal. They are loyal to God, their families, friends and the places they serve.

Effective leaders are joyous and fun. One of the reasons that make leaders effective is because they have eager followers. People like to follow leaders who are fun and demonstrate obvious joy in their lives. After all, who wants to follow a grumpy, joyless leader?

Effective leaders have a strong work ethic. One of the greatest challenges of effective leaders is maintaining balance. They are prone to be on the task 24/7.

Effective leaders are self-aware. They are able to see their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats with a great deal of objectivity. They seek out critical evaluations from people they trust to tell them the truth. Because they are self-aware, they are constantly seeking to improve.

Effective leaders take initiative. These leaders do not need to be prodded to complete

a task. On the contrary, they go well beyond others' expectations. Good managers complete an assigned task. But good leaders are regularly envisioning a better way and better strategy.

Effective leaders love people. Some effective leaders are extroverts; they are energized when they are around people. Other effective leaders are introverts. Put them in a crowd sharing small talk, and they will be drained by the end of the day. But both types of leaders have a love for people. They truly care about others. They embody servant hood.

Effective leaders are tenacious. You rarely hear about them giving up. While others may view a setback as failure, effective leaders see it as an opportunity to move in another direction.

God bless!
