CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BRIEF DESCRIPTION.

THIS IS A STATION IN THE CENTRAL SUBURBAN RAILWAY LINE.

THIS STATION IS PREDOMINENTLY CHOSEN TO STUDY AND PREVENT

TRESPASSING THAT OCCURS LARGELY AT THE LEVELING CROSSING ADJACENT

TO THE NORTHEN END OF THE PLATFORMS.

THIS STATION HAS IN ALL EIGHT PLATFORMS.

KALYAN WEST IS LARGELY POPULATED AS COMPARED TO KALYAN EAST.

THERE ARE 4 FOBS. ONE AT NORTHEN END AND 2 ARE AT MIDDLE OF PLATFORM

LENGTH AND 1 IS CONNECTING PLATFORM NO A1 AND FLATFORM 2/3

THERE IS ONLY ONE TICKET WINDOW IN WEST AND EAST ON NORTH END PLUS A

RESERVATION OFFICE.

THE MAGNITUDE OF TRESPASSING PROBLEM AND THE REASONS OF TRESPASSING

AT KALYAN STATION HAVE BEEN STUDIED AT INCEPTION REPORT STAGE WHICH HAVE

BEEN PRESENTED TO MRVC AND ALSO SUBMITTED AS INCEPTION REPORT.

1.3 REASONS OF TRESPASSING AT KALYAN

THE HEIGHT OF THE FOB IS VERY HIGH AND HENCE IS UNCOMFORTABLE EVEN FOR

NORMAL HEALTHY PERSON TO USE IT.

NUMBERS OF FOBS ARE INSUFFICIENT TO CATER TO THE PEAK HOUR NEEDS OF

PASSENGER TRAFFIC LEADING TO LOT OF OVERCROWDING ON THE FOB ITSELF.

LACK OF FACILITIES FOR PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED PEOPLE & SENIOR CITIZENS;

LIKE ESCALATOR, RAMP, ETC.

SMALL RAMP AT BOTH THE ENDS OF THE PLATFORM ALSO ENCOURAGES

TRESPASSING.

LAST MINUTE ANNOUNCEMENT OF CHANGE IN THE PLATFORM SCHEDULE FOR

ARRIVAL / DEPARTURE OF THE TRAIN.

EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES LIKE MEDICAL EMERGENCY, PERSON WITH HEAVY

LUGGAGE, ETC. LEADS TO COMPULSORY TRESPASSING.

RAG PICKERS ARE REGULAR TRESPASSERS.

INADEQUATE HEIGHT OF FENCING BETWEEN TRACKS ENCOURAGES PEOPLE TO

JUMP FROM PLATFORM ON TO THE TRACK & CLIMB THE FENCING TO REACH THE

OTHER PLATFORM, THUS LEADING TO SERIOUS TRESPASSING.

POOR CONNECTIVITY BETWEEN EAST AND WEST NEAR LEVEL-CROSSING. FOR EG.

FLYOVERS, SKYWALKS, ETC. THE TIME TAKEN TO CROSS FROM EAST TO WEST AND

VICE-VERSA USING FLYOVER IS VERY HIGH DUE TO HEAVY TRAFFIC LEADING OR

FORCING PEOPLE TO USE LEVEL- CROSSING.

SOLUTIONS

3.1 INTRODUCTION THE MAGNITUDE OF THE TRESPASSING PROBLEM AND THE REASONS OF TRESPASSING

AT KALYAN STATION HAVE BEEN STUDIED AT INCEPTION REPORT STAGE WHICH HAVE

BEEN PRESENTED TO MRVC AND ALSO SUBMITTED AS INCEPTION REPORT.

IN PREVIOUS CHAPTER, TROUBLE SPOTS HAVE BEEN IDETIFIED WITH RESPECT TO

KALYAN STATION. HENCE SOLUTIONS TO DISCOURAGE TRESPASSING HAVE BEEN

WORKED OUT KEEPING IN MIND THE FOLLOWING FIVE MAIN POINTS:

3.2 SOLUTIONS TO DISCOURAGE TRESPASSING AT KALYAN:

1. PLATFORM NO 1 AT NORTHERN END - EXTEND THE RAILING TILL NORTHERN END

BRIDGE TO STOP THE TRESPASSING HAPPENING BETWEEN PLATFORM NO. 1A &2

2. TRIANGLE SHAPED LAND BETWEEN PLATFORM NO. 1 & 1 A TRACKS AT THE END

OF PLATFORM AT NORTHERN END SHOULD BE TREATED AS GREEN PATCH AND

EXTEND THE EXISTING RAILING AT PLATFORM NO 1 NORTHERN END TILL AND

BEYOND THE EXISTING LEVEL CROSSING ON THE NORTHERN SIDE BY 100 M. TO STOP THE TRESPASSING HAPPENING BETWEEN PLATFORM NO. 1A &2

3. PROVIDE FOB NEAR PARCEL OFFICE AT NORTHERN END OF KALYAN STATION

WITH LIFTS AT BOTH ENDS AND PROVIDE ACCESS TO PLATFORMS 4/5 & 6/7 WITH

RAMPS AND THAT TO PLATFORM 2/3 BY ESCALAOR. TO PROVIDE THE ALTERNATE PATH FOR PARCEL TRANSFER AFTER THE LEVEL CROSSING AT NORTH

END OF KALYAN STATION IS CLOSED

4. PROVIDE NORTH-SOUTH SKYWALK KALYAN WEST AT NORTHERN END NEAR

PARCEL OFFICE FROM FOB TO THE RAILWAY HOSPITAL. TO FACILITATE PUBLIC MOVEMENT AND EASE THE PARCEL FLOW TO THE PARCEL OFFICE BELOW

THE SKYWALK.

5. PROVIDE RCC WALL ON THE WESTERN BOUNDARY OF RAILWAY STATIONS

BEYOND PLATFORM NO 1 TILL LEVEL CROSSING AND EXTEND IT TILL 100MTS. TO PREVENT TRESPASSING ON THE LEVEL CROSSING.

6. BARRICADE BETWEEN ALL THE TRACKS STARTING FROM 1A TILL 6. TO PREVENT TRESPASSING BETWEEN THE PLATFORMS.

7. PROVIDE RAILING AT ON EASTERN BOUNDARY OF STATION.

TO PREVENT TRESPASSING PLATFORM NO.6/7 TO THE EAST SIDE OF KALYAN STATION.

8. BARRICADE BETWEEN 5 &6 ON THE GUTTER. TO PREVENT TRESPASSING BETWEEN THE PLATFORMS.

9. ENTRY TO PLATFORM NO. 1 SHOULD BE WIDENED BELOW THE CENTRAL BRIDGE. TO PREVENT CROWDING AT THE ENTRANCE.

10. PROVIDE FOB NEAR SOUTHERN END ABANDONED PARCEL OFFICE WITH RAMPS

AND LIFTS ON PLATFORM 4/5 & 6/7 AND CONNECT IT THE SKYWALK ON WEST SIDE

TO ENSURE EASY PASSAGE OF HEAVY LUGGAGE ON SOUTHERN SIDE OF PLATFORM AND PREVENT

TRESSPASSING.

SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENTS/ADDITIONS AMENITIES:

1. ENTRY / EXIT ON PLATFORM NO 1 LEADING TO OLD BRIDGE SHOULD BE

ENHANCED.

2. FACILITY CHART SHOULD BE PLACED ON THE WALLS ON PLATFORM NO 4 & 5

NEAR NEW BRIDGE.
