Page 11: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Goal

• Discover biggest problems with the user interface of the app

Xplorer.be

Page 12: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Method

• Let the user execute tasks

• Let the user say what he/she thinks

• General impressions/remarks afterwards

Xplorer.be

Page 13: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Rationale

• Think-aloud: to know what the user thinks when a seeing a screen or trying to execute a task

• No real functionality → discover problems with interface

Xplorer.be

Page 14: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Who

• 6 fellow students: good knowledge of existing technologies

Xplorer.be

Page 15: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

What

• Open the about-page

• Logging in

• Viewing suggestion made to you, open it & like it

• Viewing suggestion you made to someone else

• Creating a new suggestion

• Searching through suggestions about a certain location

Xplorer.be

Page 16: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Duration

• ~ 5-10 minutes

Page 17: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Bare results

• Purpose of application not clear (n = 2)

• Functionality behind toggle-buttons not clear (n = 3)

• Explore-tab hard to find (n = 4)

• Colors in color-rating not clear (n = 2)

Xplorer.be

Page 18: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Interpretation

• Some users don’t know what the purpose of the app is

• Functionality of the toggle-buttons in the explore-screen isn’t immediately clear (only after some trial-and-error)

• Color-rating of suggestions doesn’t speak for itself

• Meaning of the explore-tab isn’t clear to first-time users

Page 20: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Solutions

• Purpose of the app → logo

• Toggle-buttons in explore-screen → selection menu

• Color-rating of suggestions → icon

• Meaning of tabs → icon + text

Goal

• Paper prototype-related problems solved ?

• New problems related to digitalization of prototype ?

Rationale

• Think-aloud: to know what the user thinks when executing a given task

Xplorer.be

Page 25: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Who

• 9 ‘younger’ people (20-24 year): smartphone users, students

• 1 ‘older’ person (50+): less experience with the use of apps

Xplorer.be

Page 26: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Xplorer.be

Page 28: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Bare results

• Problems with logging in (n = 5)

• Difficulty with opening details of a suggestion (n = 4)

• Not clear that a like is saved (n = 3)

• No ‘back’-button on the ‘add image’-page (n = 2)

• Selection menu instead of tab-bar (n = 2)

Xplorer.be

Page 29: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Interpretation

• Not clear that first the username and password have to entered first

• No visual acknowledgement of saving a like

• Layout-problem for opening the details of a suggestion

• No possibility to return to new suggestion without adding an image

Page 33: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Goal

• Is the Facebook-login an issue for most users ?

• Display of likes better ?

• New lay-out of suggestions clearer ?

Xplorer.be

Page 34: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Method

• Give the app to the user (mostly via the internet) → no specific tasks

• As much feedback as possible via different channels

Xplorer.be

Page 35: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Rationale

• Users use the app as they would without us being there

• Gives an indication of how usable the app is

• If their are big issues, users will feedback those

Xplorer.be

Who

• 4 fellow students

• 2 other students (20-22 year): much experience with the use of apps

Xplorer.be

Page 37: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Where

• Using the app on their smartphone

• Feedback via:

• blog

• in-app feedback page

• face-to-face

• Google Analytics

Page 39: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Bare results

• Explore-functionality not clear (n = 5)

• Wrong color of login-button in IE (n = 1)

• App gets ‘stretched’ on larger screens (n = 1)

• Lay-out overview/details clear (n = 6)

• Display of likes clear (n = 6)

• Facebook-login clear (n = 6)

Xplorer.be

Page 40: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Interpretation

• App doesn’t scale well on big screens

• Problems concerning logging in, opening details and the display of likes are solved

Xplorer.be

Page 60: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Course

• Learned to think from the viewpoint of the user

• Users have a (very) different view on the app than the developer

• Improving is only possible when testing enough with real users

Xplorer.be

Page 61: Final presentation (21/05) for user interfaces

Xplorer

• Enough functionality to be really tested and used

• More functionality still possible (images, ..)

• Not relevant for more users (right now)

• Not easy to get users in the wild
