The primary objective of network village is thedelivery of high quality business space providingattractive accommodation for small and mediumsized businesses and increasing the availability of
wider and better local employment opportunities- developed alongside exemplar high quality housingand all carefully integrated into existing communities.
The network village concept is entirely consistentwith the Governments intentions for the deliveryof urban renaissance and the creation of sustainablecommunities. Its aim is to provide high standardemployment space that will retain and attract
higher quality companies and encourage andsupport local start up ventures.
Network village is about sustainable economicdiversification and high quality job creation informer coalfield communities. The developmentof the exemplar housing will support the delivery
of the employment space and also createa truly sustainable mixed-use addition to theexisting community.
These sustainable mixed-use schemes will bedelivered by Network Space Ltd, a joint venturebetween Langtree and English Partnerships setup in 1999 with a specific remit to deliver highquality employment space in the former English
coalfield regions.

The offices and workspace units will be developed toa minimum sustainability standard of British ResearchEstablishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM)Very Good and with the aim of achieving Excellent.
The networkcentre developed at Allerton Bywater Millennium
Community achieved BREEAM standard of Excellent and receivedBREs BREEAM 2006 industrial award for sustainability.
The housing development will aim to achieve exemplar standardof Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 to help further the drivefor a step change in sustainable home building practice.
Key aims will be to achieve CO2 reduction, energy efficiencyand reduced energy consumption. Sustainable energy designto be lean,mean, green, affordable and practical. Improvementscan be achieved by:

Its remit is to develop new workspace in the former Englishcoalfields by providing quality accommodation for new andexpanding small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).
The initial remit, to deliver 500,000 sq ft, was achievedwithin the six-year target time frame. The first phase delivered17 networkcentres, with a typical scheme providing 30,000 sq fton a two acre site.
This public/private sector partnership has been very successful, thefirst phase is over 90% occupied accommodating over 200 growingorganisations and creating 1,330 jobs making a considerablecontribution to the regeneration of the coalfield regions.
A second programme of development was commissioned bythe joint venture partners comprising five new networkcentresproviding an additional 200,000 sq ft. The extended programmehas seen the networkcentre product evolve as the companyresponds to market needs by providing a workspace and servicedoffice product. These additional five networkcentres will becompleted by the end of 2007.
Network village will deliver a third phase of development anda further 300,000 sq ft of high quality business centres, officesand workspace.

SHAPING THE LANDThe proposals will seek to create a place that best serves the localcommunity and positively responds to the site context. It is importantto create open spaces that are useable and relevant, well designedand well built.
Activity areas need to be safe and offer opportunities foreveryone. The various play areas and informal recreation spacerequire to be well connected through the development andinto the existing neighbourhood.
It is important that the external environment of the developmentmakes a positive contribution to nature conservation,biodiversity andthe ecology of the site.This will be achieved through the creation ofwildlife habitats,water features and sensitive management techniques.
Reclaimed and recycled materials will be used as much as practically
possible.Wherever possible, materials will be sourced locally,especiallyif it helps to support the ecology and habitats of the region, reducetravel and support the local economy.
