The win total gave the Dragons their most wins in back-to-back seasons (40) since the 1980- 81 and 1981-82 seasons. The 55 wins in Head Coach Chad Walthall’s first three seasons are the most by any Dragon coach in his first three seasons at MSUM. The Dragons’ season was highlighted by an eight-game winning streak, was which part of the team’s 13-1 start. MSUM beat nationally-ranked St. Cloud State during that stretch in a thrilling 78-74 contest. The Dragons also received votes in the national poll during the winning streak. Another big win for MSUM came against Augustana, which qualified for the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament. The Dragons controlled the game in a 79-62 win over the Vikings on Feb. 8, 2013. MSUM also endured some tough losses, including eight by nine points or less, and four by four points or less. Two came in overtime -- to Southwest Minnesota State and at Bemidji State, the NSIC tournament runner-up. Four losses came to teams that qualified for the regional tournament. The Dragons were a strong 12-3 at home this season. MSUM also hosted an NSIC tournament game for just the second time in school history when it beat SMSU, 87-78 on Feb. 27. MSUM will graduate three senior starters -- Alex Novak, Eric Olson and Anthony Tucker -- but is slated to return a strong nucleus, led by Jordan Riewer, who will be a junior in 2013-14. Riewer averaged 11.3 points per game for MSUM and also led the team in steals and was second in assists with 113. Sophomore-to-be Tyler Vaughan, who was second on the team in three-pointers with 76, also is slated to return after averaging 9.9 points per game a year ago. 2012-13 MSUM ATHLETICS QUICK FACTS UNIVERSITY FACTS Location .................................... Chad Walthall is in his third season as the head men’s basketball coach at Minnesota State University Moorhead. The veteran coach, known for his ability to rebuild collegiate programs, took over the Dragon program in May 2010, and has proven to be up to the task of bringing the MSUM program back to prominence.
Walthall guided MSUM to a 21-10 mark and led the Dragons to their first NCAA Tournament since 1965. It also marked the Dragons’ first NCAA Tournament bid since moving to NCAA Division II from NAIA. Not only did MSUM advance to the NCAA Tournament, but they also earned a first-round win, an 82-66 victory over Southwest Minnesota State.
In Walthall’s first season, he proved he was more than capable of rebuilding the Dragon basketball program. The Dragons were selected 11th in the preseason coach’s poll for the 2010-2011 season. Walthall led the team to a sixth-place finish and earned a bid in the NSIC postseason tournament just one year after finishing 12th in league play.
Prior to arriving at MSUM, Walthall was an assistant coach at Iowa of the Big Ten from 2007-10. While on the Hawkeye coaching staff, he assisted in recruiting Iowa’s 2010 recruiting class which was ranked 20th in the nation and third in the Big Ten, by Van Coleman. Walthall also served as interim Head Coach for the Hawkeyes for four games, while Head Coach Todd Lickliter (2007 NABC Coach of Year) was sidelined due to health reasons.
Walthall’s head coaching experience has a history of rebuilding basketball programs. In 2000 he was hired as Head Basketball Coach at Loras College. He served seven seasons (2000-07) becoming the third winningest coach in school history. He also served as Director of Athletics from 2004-07.
Walthall was named 2006-07 Iowa Intercollegiate Conference (IIAC) Coach of the Year while leading the Duhawks to a 15-1 conference record and the IIAC title. It was the first IIAC title for Loras since the 1950-51 season and its most conference wins in school history. Along with achieving regular season success, Walthall led Loras to its first IIAC tournament title and first NCAA tournament berth in school history. His seven-year mark at Loras was 116-69.
Walthall led Loras to winning seasons in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in each of his seven seasons. In his last three years, Loras won 77 percent (37-11) of its league games, more than any other basketball program in the IIAC.
