Hello & Welcome!

The Kennedy Writer’s Journal is our very own

Literary Magazine. In it you will find examples

of the outstanding talent and creativity our

students have to offer. I shouldn’t be amazed,

because I know what our students can do, but I

am amazed every time. We have wonderful

writers and artists, and just all around great

students.

I’m proud to be your Principal.

Frank BafumiFrank BafumiFrank BafumiFrank Bafumi, John F. Kennedy School Principal

The Kennedy Writer’s Journal is an annual Literary

Magazine that celebrates imagination and encourages

the appreciation of literature. This magazine is

written and illustrated by the young writers and artists

of John F. Kennedy School. In this year’s issue of the

Kennedy Writer’s Journal, you will find poems, stories,

photos and interviews.

The Literary Magazine provides a great opportunity

for students to voice their opinion, write creatively,

and explore various topics. I want to add a special

thanks to Ms. Franky Flores who helped put together

our Literary Magazine.

We all out for that freedom, Don’t let the bad ones mislead them, Don’t let the good ones be defeated, Because then we’ll all feel cheated.

Why can’t you be happy? It isn’t that rainy season, You got all this freedom, Just stop sleeping on,’ Everybody else looks crappy, Wake up and kill those demons You got no reason. Because you got the freedom.

No matter what happened

You stayed strong

Even though all was wrong

You knew you had to overcome

Everything that came along

You fought like a soldier

During a war

Dealing with things

Others ignore

You knew you had to fight

With all your might

Hoping that everything

Will turn out right

The task was difficult

But not invincible

You knew from the start

The outcomes were unpredictable

As you can see

You are a fighter

An overcomer

Someone who tried, gave it their all

A person who wasn’t afraid to fall

Now you are stronger

Than you were before

Thanks to the things

You didn’t ask for

I know there are things

You don’t want to be told

But you never know

What the future holds

AwayAwayAwayAway By Astrid Valerio

She woke up with a yawn Her beloved sister was gone She left at the crack of dawn The poor girl started crying Because she felt like she was slowly dying She started to feel alone Because she couldn’t talk to her on the phone All she felt was pain She thought she was the one to blame Till this day Her sister is away

March 5th was the death of my best friend I couldn’t believe it was the day You took your last breath Ever since you’ve been gone, I try to stay strong. The day I heard you got hit by a car, It was so bizarre To know you were gone. It isn’t the same without you. I cry every night Wishing I was with you I knew you were in a better place. But it’s hard Not to see your beautiful face. I wish I can see that smile of yours One last time before you go. This is very hard to handle But I promise you that I will stay strong just for you.

I Miss YouI Miss YouI Miss YouI Miss You

I miss you, I miss your advice. I miss you being there for me. But now you’re in paradise.

You used to always have my back; You were more than a friend. I was rocking with you until the end. I didn’t believe them when they told me you were gone. Tears hit my face when I realized I was wrong.

We love each other all the same Even if we love different people There will be no blame. You see it differently And religion gets in the way My love for you will never stray And my love for her will never go away Watch me until the dawn of day And see it never got in your way. Support it or not I will be who I am Even if you love me, You should see it differently for a chance This feeling leaves a big hole in my heart But it was never like that from the start

Even being next to you takes it all away And sometimes it makes it make me feel as if you see Everyone loves the same way.

She may not remember

But at least she still has a

heart that is still loving,

But a disease that keeps

on hugging me

How can something so

powerful, so sorrowful

Dissolve a loving, mother,

Grandmother, sister’s

memory

Her brain vanishing

Her thoughts banishing

Herself is gone and has drawn my family into

agony

As it rapidly got worse

All these homemakers, all these

doctors

Trying to help her either gave up or

stay

Wanting better to let her be calm

When she paces around the house

As tears roll down my face

Watching her suffer as I ball my eyes

out

Every night as I cry to myself, to sleep

I ask myself why did this happen to

her?

Wake up America By Ginelba Graziano

I am a proud American.

My best friend is a Muslim and my other half African.

I’ve loved them since 6th grade began.

They get thrown to the floor because of their race.

They get judged by their face.

As an American, who cares about their birthplace?

I put my hijab on every morning.

Walk on the street then get a warning.

Go to school.

Why is everyone staring at me?

Oh it’s 9/11. I wish I was carefree.

“Terrorist! Are you going to bomb the school?”

“No! I was born here you fool!”

I'm proud to be in my own skin, I'm not a terrorist.

I'm peaceful within.

Every morning I wake up with the motivation of

learning something good.

I promise myself I won't screw up.

They threw me down because they thought I was from

the ‘hood.

They made fun of my looks.

Walking in a store makes me feel like a crook.

Stop judging over looks.

What’s happening in the United States?

More concerned about Kim Kardashian’s latest picture

Than when Keith Lamont Scott was shot on that date.

Why can’t everyone just unite?

Hispanics, African-Americans, Arabs, and Caucasians

Take the hatred we have and make it right.

Ignite what we have between us

And end this fight.

Dear Mitchell Silver,

I hope you are doing well. Since you are the Parks Commissioner for New York City, I knew you would be the ideal person for me to write this letter to. It’s surprising to me that there is not even one statue of a woman in Central Park.

I believe Rosa Parks should be the first female statue in this famous park. Parks is a woman who fought for the civil rights of African Americans. This strong African American woman was very brave and left a mark in history.

Rosa Parks was an inspiring African American woman. Young girls look up to her because she is inspiring in so many ways. She stood up for what was right and what she believed in even though it led her to go to jail. This courageous woman fought for equality between Blacks and Whites. Her bravery helped African Americans become free and get the equality every human being deserves.

Having a statue of Rosa Parks in Central Park would make girls all over the world fight for their dreams. Her story is so inspiring. She truly deserves to have a statue dedicated to her in this wonderful park. I want to thank you taking the time to read my letter.

Yours, Johana Lira

PrincipalPrincipalPrincipalPrincipal Dear Mr. Bafumi,

Teachers and students at Kennedy School share one thing in common:

stress. Students are overwhelmed with state testing. Not only that, but there is also pressure on students to get into advanced high school classes.

In order to reduce stress and anxiety, we should hire a trained professional that can teach us mindfulness skills to reduce stress and anxiety. This can help us develop more

attention and focus. We all need some mindfulness training; especially around PARCC testing.

Please take this idea into consideration. It will surely help us

all. Yours, Jose Lugo

Arnold Fornachou was a vendor at a fair in St. Louis, Missouri. He ran out of paper dishes to serve ice cream to his customers, so he asked his friend Ernest Hamwi for help. Ernest rolled his waffle like sweets and

gave it to Arnold, so he can scoop the ice cream in. Hamwi received a patent for a cone making machine in 1904 and started his own company.

"Mr. Bannon on Saturday Night Live"

Mr. Bannon has been doing some exciting things these days. If you’ve been watching Saturday Night Live, you would know what I am talking about. He has been part of many sketches on this Award Winning TV show. In this candid interview, he spoke about working alongside with famous celebrities, his acting career, and the obstacles he had to encounter to become part of one of the best T.V. shows of all time.

1. Tell us about experience on Saturday Night Live.

I was lucky enough to be asked to be on Saturday

Night Live by their casting direction. It was very

fun to be on the show and a little bit nerve

wracking. I always loved the show, so it was a

big deal for me.

2. What inspired you to get into acting?

I started acting/singing in 5th grade. I have

always loved and practiced it from the start and I

have had supportive parents. I did school plays

high school and it was fun to hang out with

singers/actors.

3. The moment you found out Saturday Night Live wants you on their show,

what went through your mind?

I was really, really excited. My brother and I

talked over about it. I was asked to cut my hair

really short and I did it for the show.

4. What is it like working with Hollywood stars such as Melissa

McCarthy and Alec Baldwin?

I got to see Alec Baldwin and Melissa

McCarthy and I was surprised to see how hard

they worked. They wrote most of the sketches

that are shown on Saturday Night live.

5. Would you ever give up acting for teaching?

I love my job. I would only leave teaching if it

was a really big debut.

6. What message do you have for all the aspiring actors at Kennedy

School?

When I got the chance to go into acting and

singing school, I chickened out. If you have

a dream, work hard, and go for it. Work hard

What Makes You Unique? Being unique makes a person shine in his/her own way. Being different isn’t a bad thing. It means you are brave enough to be yourself.

The relationship a person has with himself/herself is fundamental to come to terms with other surrounding relationships. That’s why it’s important for each and every one of us to embrace our uniqueness.

The Kennedy Writers’ Journal asked eight students the question: What makes you unique? Judging from their answers, we are all born with different gifts which make us beautiful in our own unique

way.

A Dog’s PurposeA Dog’s PurposeA Dog’s PurposeA Dog’s Purpose By: Andrea Pacheco

A Dog’s Purpose is a wonderful and heartwarming movie. It is based on W. Bruce Cameron’s best selling novel. The book was a good read, so I had to watch the movie! A Dog’s Purpose stars Britt Robertson, KJ Apa, and Juliet Rylance. The movie

tells the story of a little boy and how the dog was able to find him and remind him of whom he really is. The dog was able to understand his purpose on Earth. I would definitely recommend this movie to all ages. It’s a family friendly movie that everyone can enjoy.

The book “Becoming Naomi Leon” was beautifully written and masterfully told. Pam Munoz Ryan has made me feel as if I was there and I was one of them. The book was good, that I couldn’t even put it down. It’s about a girl named Esperanza who lived a happy life with her family on their ranch in Oaxaca, Mexico. Suddenly, a tragedy happens which forces Esperanza to travel to California

during the Great Depression. She had to live in a camp for Mexican farm workers. This book taught me so much about life and the obstacles that a person might encounter because of life events we have no control over. It was a great read.

WonderWonderWonderWonder By: Tashia Cieckiewicz

Wonder is a book about a kid named August. August has faced deformed problems. He was homeschooled for almost all his life except for fifth grade. August goes through many hardships because of his looks. He was constantly bullied. Many readers can make connections with what he is dealing with. Even though I was never bullied, Ii had to go to a new school when I was in third grade. It was tough trying to find the right crew of friends. August didn’t know where to fit in at his new school. Readers can relate to this story in many ways. It was a wonderful book, so make sure you go out and buy Wonder. I'm promising you'll love it!

“Ibtihaj Muhammad”

Ibtihaj Muhammad is the first U.S. athlete to

compete in the Olympics while wearing the

hijab. The 30-year-old Muslim American is

one of the best fencers in the world and is

challenging stereotypes of what an Olympian

looks like. Last year, at the Rio de Janeiro

Games, Ibtihaj made history when she

became the first Muslim American medalist.

Former President Obama asked her to bring

home the medal and she did not fail to

amaze. She was also honored as one of Time

Magazine’s 100 Most Influential people for

2016. In honor of Women’s History Month,

The Kennedy Writers’ Journal spoke to the

Olympic medalist about competing in the

Olympics and paving the way for athletes who

want to follow in her footsteps.

1. You are the first U.S. athlete to compete in

the Olympics while wearing a hijab. What’s

it like for you to make history at the

games?

I’ve worked so long and so hard for this to happen,

and now that it have, it all seems somewhat

surreal. While competing and trying to make the

team, making history because of my hijab really

didn’t cross my mind. My hijab is a part of who I

am, so I really didn’t consider that I would make

history. Now that it’s happened, I’m just so

honored to represent the U.S. and Muslim

women around the world at the games.

2. How do you train for the Olympics?

How do you stay on top of your game?

I’ve always practiced and trained with my

fencing coach at least 5 to 6 days a week. But

for the last four years, my training has

intensified. I usually practice daily, cross train at

the gym and work very closely with a personal

trainer. I watch my diet very closely and seek

the advice of athletic nutritionists. I try to take

good care of my mind and body.

3. Former President Obama invited you to

the White House many times. How

does it feel to get recognition from the

former President of the United States?

Former President Obama and First Lady Michelle

have been so wonderful in inviting me to be a part

of discussions on Muslim relations in the U.S. I’ve

been part of several panels with him. It is an

honor to be recognized and have your opinions

considered by the former President and first lady

of the United States.

4. What advice would you give to future

athletes who want to follow in your

footsteps?

I would advise other athletes to be true to their

passions and dreams.

Don’t allow anyone to tell you what sport you

can or cannot participate in because of your

religion or for any reason. In any sport, it is

necessary to set high goals for yourself; this

requires lots of sacrifices and hard work. You

have to be determined and committed in order

to achieve your goals. Achieving your

ultimate goal makes it all worth....

“Best Surprise of My Life” A short story

By Karen Guanangui

One fall morning at sunrise, Sara heard the doorbell. Her heart dropped because it was too early for visitors. She was very scared at the moment. The bell rang again and again and again. Sara mustered her courage and went downstairs to open the door. Someone had left a huge envelope on the steps. Sara’s mom usually mails her surprises, so she thought it was another one of her thoughtful gifts. Little did she know she was receiving one of the most

prestigious awards in the country? As she opened the envelope she was shivering. Boy was she up for the surprise

of a lifetime. She had just won $100,000!

Earlier that month, Sara had entered an online Mathematics contest. The best mathematicians from all over the United States were competing against each other. There were many numerical and analytical questions. The questions needed a lot of deep thinking, but she managed to solve all the problems correctly.

Even though the brilliant young girl was a senior in high school, she exceeds and did better than the math experts. It was a big check, but Sara knew exactly how to spend it.

Some of the money went to her grandma’s foundation that is geared for kids with cancer. She also spent a portion of the money to help her mom pay the mortgage. Sara wanted to attend college and pursue a career in Mathematics. She aspires to become a Calculus professor at UCLA. A lot of the money she won went towards her college tuition. That $100,000 check came just in time!

SoSoSoSolar Systemlar Systemlar Systemlar System By: Dhruv Chauhan

What do you think is the hottest planet in our Solar System? Some of you might think it is Mercury since it’s the closest to the sun, but it’s actually Earth’s twin, Venus. Venus’s temperature can reach a scorching 863 degrees. This is the hottest planet in our Solar System

because of its thick atmosphere. Thick yellow clouds which are made up of carbon dioxide cover the whole planet. Clouds trap the sun’s heat in its atmosphere, which makes the planet so hot. Scientists believe that Venus had oceans, but because of the heat, the oceans evaporated.

What is the Largest Star in the Universe? Stars are in many sizes from dwarfs to super giants. Our Sun is an average yellow star that is pretty big, but it no where compared to the Red Supergiant VY Canis Majoris. It has a diameter of 1.7 Billion miles and it is 2,100 times as large as the Sun. Even if all of this is great, Canis Majoris is a dying star. Most super giants release energy at an incredible rate, so when they use up their energy they explode which is known as a Supernova. The good news is that VY Canis Majoris will not explode in another 100,000 years.

Space Probe By David Chaudhari

Thanks to the invention of the Space Probes, we have discovered a

lot about space than ever before. Space Probes are unmanned

spacecraft that explore the solar system. The first probe to

successfully land was in Mars, in 1976, the name of the probe was

the Viking. Also, in 2004, the twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity,

which explored the dried seas of Mars, and eventually they

discovered evidence of water. However, the most famous probes were the Voyager 1 and 2,

which visited different planets in the solar system. Today, probes further discover the solar

system and deep space.

Venezuela's worst economic crisis

Did you Know that Venezuela Is facing One of the Worst Economic Problems In Its History? It used to be a rich country, but now the government is running out of money. Since prices are going up so much, some people don’t even have enough money to buy food. The value of money isn’t what it used to be. Many people aren’t happy with President Nicolas Maduro. Venezuela

depends heavily on its oil. The government started to use the oil money to buy things from other countries because it now cost so much for them to make their own products. So many deaths are occurring due to violent demonstrations.

Ayah Bdeir Empowers Kids Through Her Budding Electronic Empire By Aayushi Patel

Little Bits is a budding electronics company geared towards innovation in 21st century education and entertainment. At Kennedy School, we have been using Little Bits, which is a very fun way to unleash our potential and imagination. Ayah Bdeir made a substantial breakthrough in engineering, making her paramount in the field. Her award winning empire consists of building blocks that can be generated to visionary and ingenious inventions. It was a fun way for my friends and me to express our creativity when using Little Bits. Described as “One of the 50 Smartest Companies in 2016,” and one of the “Popular Mechanics’ 25 Makers who are Reinventing the American Dream,” Ms. Bdeir is inevitably an acclaimed leader in engineering. To me, her company is the greatest tool humanity has ever created. As a future engineer, I wanted to speak to the brilliant mind behind this empire. Our aspiring engineer Aayushi Patel spoke to Ms. Bdeir about her budding electronics empire and how she sets herself apart from other engineers.

Tell me a little about yourself and your electronic empire. I am the founder and CEO of little Bits, a hardware startup empowering kids everywhere to become inventors. My career and education have centered on making STEM/STEAM, 21st century learning and invention with technology, more accessible to people around the world. As an electrical engineer and alumna of the MIT Media Lab, I founded little Bits in 2011 to democratize hardware and allow everyone, regardless of age, gender, technical ability or discipline, to be creative with electronics and reinvent their world. Today, little Bits products are sold in more than 60 countries around the world and can be found in over 5,000 schools and maker space.

What personal characteristics should a person have to be a successful engineer?

You should love problem solving - not only the end result but the trial and error that you do to get there.

Page 28: FINAL MAGAZINE JUNE 2017 - Edl · 2018. 8. 31. · FINAL MAGAZINE JUNE 2017 3 C O N T E NT Hello & Welcome! The Kennedy Writer’s Journal is our very own Literary Magazine. In it

FINAL MAGAZINE JUNE 2017 28

What was your first “win” that made you confident your empire would explode into popularity? In December of 2011, we started selling our first little Bits product, and it sold out in just two weeks. We were surprised by how broad the customer base was, as the product appealed to parents, teachers, hobbyists, designers and even entrepreneurs. Shortly after that, our team got a call from NASA about a potential collaboration on a product to get kids excited about space. When NASA calls, you know you have a “winning” product.

How do little Bits define success?

My team and I are on a mission to inspire kids everywhere to become creative inventors with the help of little Bits electronic building blocks.

Ultimately we want everyone — regardless of age, gender, background or discipline — to have the problem-solving skills and creative confidence to invent the world they want to live in. Success to us means having little Bits in every school and home to help achieve that goal.

How do you set yourself apart from other engineers? How do you stay on top of your game?

As an engineer and maker, it is vital to always stay inspired. Luckily, I have an amazing little Bits community of inventors that never cease to amaze and motivate me. Whenever I’m stuck on a problem or just need a boost, I go to the invention page or open the little Bits app to see what new inventions people have uploaded that day. They always impress me with their ingenuity and creativity, and it helps to remind me why I’m here and pushing little Bits to be the best it can be.

What is the biggest risk that you have taken while managing your budding electronic empire?

Deciding to launch a hardware company at all is a huge risk. It’s not like creating an app. Hardware involves upfront costs, long lead times, minimum quantities and a host of other challenges. What advice would you give to your younger self at the onset of little Bits?

Always be testing and iterating! At little Bits we’ve gotten a lot better over the years about conducting user testing, using every interaction with customers as an opportunity to collect feedback and refine the product. I would advise my younger self to start this even sooner.

Some health advocates believe that banning bake sales can reduce childhood obesity. On the other hand, many students believe bake sales can help pay for activities and educational field trips. Do you think Kennedy School should bring back Bake Sales?

These are their quotes:

If I were to actually be able to meet any fictional character, generally from comic books, I would have to say I would like to meet Barry Allen. He is well known as The Flash. Barry Allen has appeared on multiple comic books and even has his own TV show. I would simply like to know how it feels to be the fastest man alive. He does have a hard life having to stop crime as the flash and solving crimes as a forensic scientist for the CCPD, a fictional police force. I would like to know how he deals with the multiple struggles of being Barry Allen and The Flash both at once. Yes, he does have help to stop crime from all over the city but I am still curious to see how he feels.
