Benefits and Challenges in the use of Big Data and AI Liz Bacon
Professor of Software Engineering and Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor
Abstract As artificial intelligence and big data become ever more prevalent in society, this keynote will examine the benefits as well as the growing challenges around their use, highlighted by the author’s research in a variety of applications such as education and training, behavioural modelling, ageing, tourism, and crisis management. The talk will also discuss issues around cybersecurity, morality, human behaviour, ethics and the need for continuous education of the public. Bio Professor Liz Bacon BSc, PhD, CEng, CSci, CITP, FBCS, PFHEA, MACM is a Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Greenwich in London, with a University wide remit leading the development of technology enhanced learning and pedagogic research. She is currently President of EQANIE (European Quality Assurance Network for Informatics Education). She was President of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, in the year 14-15 and is a past Chair of the BCS Academy of Computing, and the CPHC (Council of Professors and Heads of Computing) national committee. Liz is a Professor of Software Engineering and a Co-Director of the eCentre research group. She is an experienced researcher and PhD supervisor, and has been involved in several EU research projects, including being Principal Investigator and Project Coordinator. She is an experienced systems designer and developer and her research interests include computing policy, smart systems, security, semantic web, big data and technology enhanced learning. Liz is passionate about the development of her discipline and keen to inspire more people to choose computing as a career, particularly women.

Surface Problems in Information Science
Naohiro Ishii Department of Information Science,
Aichi Institute of Technology Yakusacho, Toyota, Japan 470-0392
Abstract Artificial intelligence(AI) and big data processing are extensively developed in recent information technologies. Deep learning in AI has been tried to apply to robotics, social activities and home appliances. Also, big data processing has been used in the networks and social services. There were fundamental problems in these recent technologies in AI and big data processing. One of these was “surface problems” in information technologies. The word “surface problem” is well known in physics, material sciences, and nanosciences as in the surface phenomena of the semiconductor, metals and crystal structures. As the surface problem in the information science, threshold element of neuron model is discussed, which are also fundamental elements used in deep learning neural networks. The surface is characterized by the surface extreme data, which discriminate classes of data. Threshold logic of their elements with much variables has not fully solved yet. We mention how to deal with such problem with much variables using surface data. As another problem of the surface problem, we have the reduction of higher dimensional data used in the big data processing. As the reduction method, reducts in the rough set are well known in the data processing. We mention how to generate reducts using the surface border data among classes. Bio Naohiro Ishii received the Ph.D degree in Electrical and Communication Engineering from Tohoku University, Japan, in 1968. He was a professor in the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science, Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan, where he had the conference, SNPD 2001. He is a professor in the Department of Information Science, Aichi Institute of Technology. He was a conference chair of SNPD 2001 and is previous President of ACIS. He was an editorial member of Int. Journal of Knowledge-based Intelligent Eng. Systems, Int. Journal on Artificial Intelligence Tools and is of International
