Educational Process- First Degree Programmes

BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus

The mission of BITS Pilani, Dubai Campus is to prepare youth to act as leaders for the promotion of economic and industrial develop-ment of the region and the world, and to play a responsible role in the society. BITS Pilani has been following semester system with continu-ous evaluation since its inception. The educa-tional programmes are modular and flexible. The same philosophy is replicated at its Dubai Campus.

The degree programmes are based on the principle that a set of courses make up the structure where each course is self contained, but nevertheless, acts as a bridge between what proceeds and what comes after. It is an attempt to awaken curiosity in the minds of the students and train them to think scientifically and to enable them to face the unfamiliar. Through the Practice School Programme, we have established purposeful linkages with the

industry and the students with the Practice School option get a flavour of professional world.

The performance of the students in each course registered is continuously evaluated by the faculty throughout the semesters in terms of tests, quizzes, assignments, projects, labora-tory work, etc. followed by a comprehensive examination at the end of the semester. The students thereby get large number of opportu-nities to reveal their learning. The continuous evaluation provides a regular feedback to the students to know where they stand, thus, enabling them to improve and to cultivate habits of regular study and face challenges.

The integrated First Degree Programmes are offered at the first tier with the nomenclature B.E. (Hons.) and M.Sc. (Tech.) from the Dubai Campus. These are level-wise equivalent degrees and are based on the modular

structure with the academic requirements spelt out in terms of number of courses and units rather than number of years. The courses are structured in such a way that the student will be able to finish the programme in eight semesters. The flexibility of the Institute allows the student to do the programme at a faster pace and finish it earlier than eight semesters or at a slower pace to finish it in more than eight semesters.

(a) B.E. (Hons.): These programmes in Engineering are Mathematics and hard science based, and incorporate up-to-date techniques of analysis and synthesis in the respective discipline.
