“What did Dr. King say? And what will we do?” is the theme for Cul-ver City’s 9th Annual Celebration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The day-long celebration will feature a special screening of the epic 1970 Sidney Lumet film, “King: A Filmed Record. . . From Montgomery to Memphis. “ The keynote presentation will be given by Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith of Agape International Spiritual Cen-ter. Culver City’s MLK celebration will start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, at the Culver City Se-nior Center, 4095 Overland Avenue in Culver City. The event is free. Other activities during Culver City’s King Day celebration include a panel discussion on the impact of Dr. King’s legacy; a dramatic rendi-tion of Dr. King’s “I have a Dream Speech” by Actor Gerald Rivers; the debut of “Ways to Practice Non-violence” public service announce-ment created by members of Culver City Teen Center and edited by ani-mator Bruce Heller; and a special performance by singer-songwriter Rickie Byars Beckwith, Music and Arts Director of the Agape Interna-

tional Spiritual Center. Actress and playwright Christina Harley and mo-tivational speaker Wayne Slappy will co-host the day’s activities. The featured film “King: A Filmed Record . . . from Montgomery to Memphis” was originally released in theaters as a “one-time-only” event on March 24, 1970 and has been rarely seen since. There was a limited re-released in 2013 to com-memorate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. The film chronicles the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from the beginning of the Civil Rights move-ment in Montgomery, Alabama and culminating with his 1968 assas-sination in Memphis. Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary, the film combines dramatic readings by Harry Bela-fonte and others involved in the civil rights movement with newsreel and archival footage to create a power-ful and comprehensive record of Dr. King’s legacy. Keynote speaker Dr. Michael Ber-nard Beckwith founded the Agape International Spiritual Center in 1986 based on faith in a vision of

Cal State L.A. will celebrate the installation of renowned artist and writer Rick Hohn’s painting, “Victo-rious Struggle,” to be mounted in the hallway outside of the Univer-sity’s Charter College of Education office (King Hall D2069). A recep-tion will immediately follow the in-stallation ceremony. This eight-foot mural painting with seven progressive scenes from left to right depicts the struggle that Hohn’s childhood friend, Ja-mie, went through to get off the floor. Though severely paralyzed from polio, he could walk with braces and crutches, by raising and swinging his legs in front of

his crutches for a step. The painting also demonstrates the fortitude in overcoming insurmountable odds in spite of Jamie’s acute pa-ralysis.Hohn, who was born with cerebral palsy, has lim-ited use of his limbs and paints. When Hohn was 15-years-old, his mother taped a paintbrush to his head pointer. They discovered that al-though his head pointer improved his communicative effectiveness, it also allowed him to paint. His first watercolor paintings were impres-sionistic landscapes. Today, he is

an accomplished artist, minister, consultant and author of several books. For more about Hohn: http://blog.dynavoxtech.com/au-thors/rick-hohn/The art piece is donated by Sherry Best, a professor of special educa-tion, physical and health impair-

ments at CSULA, and her husband John Best. Thursday, Dec. 12, 4:45-6 p.m.King Hall building’s main entrance. Cal State L.A. is located at 5151 State University Drive in Los An-geles. Public permit parking is

In a move that many around him said they did not expect, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca announced on Tuesday that he will retire at the end of this month.Baca, whose department and jails have been under fire that includes indict-ments of his deputies for allegedly beating inmates and visitors and falsifying reports, was expected to run for a fifth term despite all the scandals. The announcement came as the Sheriff’s Department and its jails have been un-der increasing scrutiny. In an emotional statement, Baca said the major rea-son for his decision was the “negative perception” the upcoming campaign would have on his department.

“I didn’t want to have to en-ter a campaign that would be full of negative, conten-tious politicking,” said Baca, 71, who has spent 48 years in the Sheriff’s Department since becoming a deputy.Last month, federal pros-ecutors indicted 18 current and former sheriff’s depu-ties for alleged crimes that included beating inmates and jail visitors, falsifying re-ports, and trying to obstruct an FBI probe of the nation’s largest jail system.U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. said the indictments showed that “some mem-bers of the Sheriff’s De-partment considered them-selves to be above the law” and “demonstrated behavior that had become institution-alized.”

Baca was born in East Los Angeles. His mother was brought illegally from Mex-ico when she was a child. Later, she worked as a seamstress.“In those days, undocu-mented was different than it is today,” Baca was quoted as saying in an interview with KPCC, a Southern Cal-ifornia public radio station. “And so it wasn’t difficult for her to become a citizen.”Baca recalled in the inter-view that his parents di-vorced, and that his mother came close to putting him up for adoption.“She couldn’t handle three kids at the same time, so I was put up for foster care,” he said, according to KPCC. “Then my paternal grand-

El Camino College professor and master swimmer Traci Granger set yet another world record in a regional swim meet earlier this month. One of the fastest swim-mers in the world, Granger tied the world record in the short course 50-meter butterfly, with a time of 31.13. She also went five for five at the meet, bringing home five first-place medals. The victory caps a tremendous year for Granger, who set several national and international speed records this past spring and sum-mer. This month’s victory is the third world record for 2013. She is a 10-time national champion and has bested many athletes in younger age brackets, claiming these vic-tories after taking nearly one year off from competing due to hip surgery.Granger set her first national record in 2008, winning her division in the 50-yard butter-fly at the United States Masters Swimming (USMS) Short Course Championships. Since then, she continued to win gold med-als and break records, often finishing with better times than competitors in younger age groups. Reaching the age of 55 this year, she moved into the 55-59 bracket. And yet, as a lifelong competitive swimmer, Granger does not set out to be a champion; she just enjoys the workout and the camara-derie of swimming with a group.“I do better in the pool when I am pushing myself and not thinking about what is going on in the races,” said Granger, who trains year-round at the Torrance Plunge with a motivated group of South Bay masters swimmers called the Los Angeles Peninsula Swimmers, or LAPS.“When I won the world record, I didn’t know how fast I was swimming but when I finished, they announced it, and I was surprised. When I race, I’m just trying to beat one of the guys on the team who always challenges me – Duncan McBride – we have an ongoing competition between us.”Granger took a break from competitive swimming in 2012 when she noticed her leg and hip were giving her some trouble. After consulting with doctors, she was diagnosed with a torn hip flexor and surgery was sched-

uled. The rehab required her to slow down in everything, including walking, and definitely no swimming for three months. She was bored immediately.“I couldn’t sit on the stationary bike all day – I had to find something interesting to do,” she said.Granger soon met up with El Camino Col-lege exercise fitness specialist Kim Jones, who created personalized workouts to help with the rehab.“Training with Kim was outstanding – she is good for me because she asked me about my goals and helped me become stronger.” Granger said. “I told her that I would do any-thing that was going to make me stronger in the pool, anything that would be good for swimming. It was wonderful, with a lot of variety; I was getting bored doing the same thing. I needed to get my exercise, but I also wanted it to be interesting.”Turns out, Granger came back even faster after surgery. In May, Granger traveled to Indianapolis and shook up the short course nationals, winning five events: the 50-, 100-, and 200-yard but-terfly; the 50 free; the 100 IM, and broke a national record in the 50-yard butterfly, with a time of 27.45. She felt tired, but did not de-tect post-surgery problems, so she decided to compete on the international level and en-ter the long course competition, though she has very little experience in this venue. The long course season includes races mea-sured in meters, versus the yards presented at nationals. International competitors race in metered pools, so champions in these races are considered the fastest in the world.

U.S. Climber Dies During AscentOf Mexican Volcano

Wounded Veteran Oskar Zepeda Among Team Of Vets Working To Put AwayChild Predators

A Mexican official says an Ameri-can climber has died on Mexico’s tallest mountain after slipping on an icy slope and falling about 300 feet.Charles King, 25, was scaling the Pico de Orizaba, an 18,941-foot peak that straddles the states of Puebla and Veracruz, when he and three companions fell at a height of around 15,000 feet.

Ricardo Maza Limon, head of civil protection emergency services for Veracruz state, says King’s body had to be physically lowered to 12,000 feet in order for a helicopter to transport it out of the area.King was climbing with another American and two Guatemalans.Maza says the three fell around 90 feet and were only lightly hurt.

Oskar Zepeda has had pretty much one mission in his life: kill or capture. After serving nine tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, he now has a new target — child predators.Zepeda, 29, is part of a 17-mem-ber class of veterans trained in computer forensics and sent to Immigration and Customs En-forcement field offices. They aren’t paid, and there’s no guarantee that they’ll have a full-time job when their one-year stint ends. But the interns are finding the purpose of their new mission out-weighs financial considerations.“I love challenges. And I have a family of my own,” said Zepeda, whose military career was cut short by a hand grenade and the 25 operations that followed. “I feel

I’m still serving my country and protecting my family at the same time.”For Shannon Krieger, who was in the Army and is now assigned to an ICE office in New Orleans, “This was a new fight I could sink my teeth into. That’s what really I was looking for. I wasn’t just going to take a job so I can have a pay-check.”Federal officials say a children’s lobbying group, PROTECT, pitched the idea of incorporating wounded veterans in the fight against child pornography. ICE Special Agent Patrick Redling said the agency, where veterans account for 30 percent of the workforce, ran with the idea.“They built their career upon fight-ing for this country and keeping cit-

izens of this country safe,” Redling said. “What better to get somebody already with that mindset into a program where it’s another battle-field, very similar, but you’re keep-ing our children safe. You’re taking predators off the street.”The agency relied on the U.S. Special Operations Command to get the word out to wounded ser-vice members transitioning out of the military or already separated. The veterans were given about 11 weeks of intensive computer and legal training before being as-signed to an ICE field office.Even though they’re not getting paid by ICE, the majority of those on the team are receiving disabil-ity compensation. Many also get a monthly stipend from the Depart-

Actress Alexa Vega Marries Big Time Rush Singer Carlos Peña Jr. In Mexico

Eva Longoria always looks hot and sporting only a white tank top, the Latina bombshell sizzles as she graces the cover “Maxim’s” Janu-ary/February issue, in which she is named “Woman of The Year.”“It’s especially awesome after how long it’s been since my first cover [in 2005],” Longoria told the maga-zine.The 38-year-old has become well-known for her screen roles, but has truly become a source of in-spiration and an icon in the Latino community for her work as a pro-ducer, businesswoman and philan-thropist. “Maxim” took notice.“I’ve had a beautiful relationship with ‘Maxim’ over all these years,” the former “Desperate House-wives” actress said. “When some-one sees the cover of this issue, they’re going to say, ‘Que rico!’”The unbelievably busy Longoria had just presented her thesis for a master’s degree in Chicano stud-ies at Cal State Northridge when the interview with the magazine

happened.“I was like, ‘My brain can’t jump that fast from a ‘Maxim’ interview to a thesis!’” she said, explaining why she had to reschedule the interview. “Back in high school I really was the chameleon, too. I got along with the honors math club, then I would go to cheerlead-ing practice, and then I was a band geek as well.”So what does Longoria do to unwind? She hits the kitchen.“One thing people are usually sur-prised about when they get to know me is how domestic I am,” she told the magazine. “So when you see

the sexy ‘Maxim’ cover and then you put it against me in an apron with flour in my hair, it takes a mo-ment to reconcile that image.”The issue hits the stands Jan. 17.

Alexa Vega is married again. The “Spy Kids” actress tied the knot with her boyfriend Carlos Peña, Jr. in a ceremony in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on Saturday, Jan. 4, two months after their engagement, PEOPLE reports. In the morning of her nuptials, the 25-year-old actress tweeted: “Wow… I’m getting excited ner-vous!!!! Ahhh!!! #CountDown-ToAisle.”With was then followed by a tweet simply saying: “Mrs. PENAVEGA.”According to Just Jared, Vega and Peña have taken each other’s last

names and will now go as Alexa PeñaVega and Carlos PeñaVega. The couple released a joint state-ment about their big day: “We are so thrilled and blessed that we were able to have all our close friends and family join us on our special day.”The “Machete Kills” actress and the 24-year-old Big Time Rush singer began dating last year and announced their engagement in September when she posted a snapshot of Peña that she cap-tioned saying, “Hello fiancé.”

His agenda tattered by last year’s confrontations and missteps, President Barack Obama begins 2014 clinging to the hope of winning a last-ing legislative achievement: an overhaul of immigration laws.

SUMMARYIt will require a deft and careful use of his powers, combining a public campaign in the face of protests over his administra-tion’s record number of depor-tations with quiet, behind-the-scenes outreach to Congress, something seen by lawmakers and immigration advocates as a major White House weak-ness.

In recent weeks, both Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, have sent signals that raised expectations among overhaul sup-porters that 2014 could still yield the first comprehensive change in immigration laws in nearly three decades. If successful, it would fulfill an Obama promise many La-tinos say is overdue.

The Senate last year passed a bipartisan bill that was compre-hensive in scope that addressed border security, provided enforce-ment measures and offered a path to citizenship for 11 million immi-grants in the United States illegal-ly. House leaders, pressed by tea party conservatives, demanded a more limited and piecemeal ap-proach.

Indicating a possible opening, Obama has stopped insisting the House pass the Senate version. And two days after calling Boeh-ner to wish him happy birthday in November, Obama made it clear he could accept the House’s bill-by-bill approach, with one caveat: In the end, “we’re going to have to do it all.”

Boehner, for his part, in December hired Rebecca Tallent, a former top aide to Sen. John McCain and most recently the director of a bi-partisan think tank’s immigration task force. Even opponents of a broad immigration overhaul saw Tallent’s selection as a sign legis-lation had suddenly become more likely. Boehner also fed specula-tion he would ignore tea party

pressure, bluntly brushing back their criticism of December’s mod-est budget agreement.“The question is what are the core things that Republicans can’t move away from, what are the core things that Democrats can’t walk away from,” said Republican pollster David Winston, who regu-larly consults with the House lead-ership. “You may have preferences and then you may have core ele-ments. That’s part of the process of going back and forth.”

If successful, an immigration com-promise could restore some luster to Obama’s agenda, tarnished in 2013 by failures on gun legislation, bipartisan pushback on his efforts to take military action against Syria and the disastrous enrollment start for his health care law.

Participating in the UN campaign is an important part of Jimena’s professional life. “Women need to see that there is a better life for them out there.”With a new album, My Swing Moods, Jimena is bringing it all to-gether. “It’s all about positive emo-tions,” she notes, “a big step forward for me.” The collection, which was released during a live concert this past August at Jazz Club Muliero in Cancun, is a distinctive gallery of the artist’s latest work, including songs like Evidence Under The Pil-low, We Will Always Be Together, and Showtime. Joining Jimena on the album are pianist Mario Patron, Aaron Cruz playing stand-up bass, drummer Giovanni Figueroa, and Grammy Award-winning engineer Alessandro Perrota, who worked with R&B icon Tony Bennett. It’s available on iTunes, and Jimena’s voice complements her band with a soft, touching blend of contem-porary jazz and blues. This year’s competition was sched-uled for August in Mission Viejo, the one-year anniversary of Granger’s surgery. She competed in five events, took first place in four, sec-ond in one, and broke the world re-cord in the 50-meter butterfly, with a time of 30.97.“I never want to look at the records or the times because I don’t want to put any pressure on myself,” said Granger, who competed in the 50-, 100-, and 200-meter butterfly, the 50-meter freestyle and the 200-me-ter IM. “At the Mission Viejo event, since it was close to home, we had some friends and family come out to cheer for each other. That’s what is fun. Good exercise, good friends.”The national and world champion does not like to talk about her vic-tories; instead, Granger is looking forward to getting into the pool ev-ery day and working with students at El Camino College, where she teaches intermediate and advanced swimming, health, and first aid.A faculty member at El Camino College since 1992, Granger was previously the head swim coach at California Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo. At Cal Poly SLO, Granger developed several All-American and national qualifying athletes. As an athlete, Granger was an All-American sprinter and an NCAA Division II Championship finalist. She has a master’s degree from Colorado State University, a bachelor’s degree from Cal Poly SLO, and an associate degree from College of the Sequoias.“I’m just trying to have fun and get in my exercise,” she said. “Swimming seems to be a good way to do that.”

Baca recommended Assistant Sheriff Terri McDonald.Baca has acknowledged mistakes while strongly defending his depart-ment and distancing himself person-ally from allegations of misconduct. The sheriff said he made improve-ments including creating a database to track inmate complaints. He has also hired a new head of custody and rearranged his command staff. On Monday, Baca said he would ac-cept the outcome of the FBI investi-gation but strongly denied criticisms that abuse was rampant. The American Civil Liberties Union sued the Sheriff’s Department in 2012 saying the sheriff and his top commanders had condoned violence against inmates. The or-ganization released a report docu-menting more than 70 cases of mis-conduct by deputies.A federal jury in October found Baca personally liable for $100,000 for failing to stop inmate abuse by dep-uties in Men’s Central Jail in a case brought by a man who said he was severely beaten while awaiting trial. The Sheriff’s Department also faced recent scrutiny over hiring. The de-partment announced it was reform-ing its hiring practices last month af-ter it was disclosed that 80 deputies had criminal convictions, histories of misconduct or other problem back-grounds. It also gave preferential hiring treatment to friends and rela-tives of its employees under a spe-cial “Friends of the Sheriff” program that allowed top officials to lobby on behalf of applicants, the Los Ange-les Times reported.First elected in 1998 after his oppo-nent, the incumbent Sherman Block, died days before the vote, Baca was re-elected to a fourth term in 2010 and has remained a popular figure for much of his time in office.Less than a year ago he was picked as the Sheriff of the Year by the Na-tional Sheriff’s Association, which cited his providing educational op-portunities for inmates and his ef-forts to work with religious groups. The group also noted the vast size of the Sheriff’s Department and the relatively low crime rates in areas patrolled by deputies. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is the largest in the Unit-ed States, with a staff of 18,000 and a budget of $2.5 billion. The agency provides law enforcement services to 42 incorporated cities, 140 unin-corporated communities, 10 com-munity colleges, and more than a million daily commuters of Metrolink and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The department also manages the nation’s largest local jail system,

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (714) 573-1965 or visit this Internet Web site http://www.priorityposting.com/Priority/, using the file number assigned to this case 12-CA0190. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Date: 12/16/2013 MILES, BAUER, BERGSTROM & WINTERS, LLP 1231 E.
