A successful structural waterproofing solution requires good design, appropriate material specification and correct installation to ensure water does not enter the building. Failure to comply with any one of the above can lead to a waterproofing breach, resulting in substantial remedial measures and costs.

Xtra-Load Imperma Torch-on Tanking MembraneXtra-Load Imperma Torch-on Tanking is a polymer modified bitumen torch-on membrane with a strong polyester carrier.The upper surface is finished with a fine silica sand and the underside is finished with a thermofusible film.

Xtra-Load Imperma is manufactured to include a special selvedge to improve bond strength at the laps.

Xtra-Load Torch-on Protection Layer is a polyester reinforced, SBS modified bitumen membrane. The polyester carrier is saturated and then coated in SBS modified bitumen. The upper surface is coated with mineral granules to resist damage from backfill and the underside is finished with a thermofusible film.

Xtra-Load SA is a self adhesive, flexible waterproofing membrane, manufactured from tough, cross laminated HDPE film, laminated to a 0.9mm thick layer of modified rubber bitumen adhesive, protected by a pull off release film.

Xtra-Load GRM comprises a bitumen/polymer self adhesive compound, aluminium foil and cross laminated high density polyethylene carrier, with a white finish to the upper surface with a 50mm self adhesive bitumen selvedge with a pull off release film giving improved lap security. The lower surface is protected with a pull off release film.

Xtra-Load Protection Board

Xtra-Load Protection Board is a pre-moulded tough durable material used as a protection for waterproofing membranes against backfill for below ground walls.

Xtra-Load Protection Board withstands normal on site foot traffic protecting the membrane from construction abuse and puncture by rock and aggregate during backfilling operations.

Xtra-Load protection Board is not intended as a water proofing material though it has water proofing qualities.

Xtra-Load 27 Drainage Board

Xtra-Load 27 Drainage Board is a high strength HDPE cupsated core hot welded to a geotextile filter specifically designed to allow the passage of water and gases to drainage outlets or vents.

Installation and Site work

Handling and StorageIcopal storage and handling instructions for each of the products must be followed at all times, damage as a result of incorrect storage will not be accepted by Icopal.

Icopal tanking membranes are delivered to site in rolls wrapped in a paper wrapper bearing the name of the product, roll size and company details. Xtra-Load Self Adhesive Tanking membranes are delivered in cardboard cartons labelled showing the name of the product, roll size and company details.

Where appropriate British Board of Agrément and other accreditation details are also identified on the packaging.

Xtra-Load Protection Board is delivered flat on pallets.

All tanking membranes and associated products must be stored on a flat level surface away from the ground, under cover and away from sources of heat. Any particular handling and storage instructions on the packaging must also be followed.

In excessively cold conditions materials should be stored in a warm environment for at least 24hours ahead of installation, this will make handling easier in cold conditions.

It should not be assumed that because the ambient temperature is as required for construction work to continue the membranes etc are at the same temperature, if left outside overnight.

Site SafetyConstruction sites can be a dangerous environment and the application of vertical tanking means that you may be working at height and as such all necessary personal protection equipment must be made available and worn at all times.

In particular adequate and safe scaffolding must be provided, capable of being loaded with materials, gas bottles, tools and the like.

Adequate edge protection and kick boards must be provided in line with the relevant safety requirements for construction sites.

General InstallationIcopal tanking materials are installed in accordance with current Icopal instructions and the current Codes of Practice for the installation of waterproofing and workmanship for work on site for waterproofing.

Care must be taken to follow the specification and details to ensure the continuity of the tanking membrane at ground level with damp proof membranes and damp proof courses.

• Care must be taken to ensure the continuity of both vertical and horizontal tanking.

• All surfaces should have a smooth finish, free from cavities, projections and mortar deposits.

• Surfaces should be dry and free from dust and frost. Concrete surfaces should be dense.

• Vertical surfaces of brick and blockwork should be dry and rendered to provide an even surface.

• Brick or blockwork not rendered must be flush pointed to give a smooth surface without sudden changes in level.

• Prior to application of the tanking membrane, all surfaces must be primed with Xtra-Seal QD Bitumen Primer and allowed to dry thoroughly.

• All angles must be reinforced with a 300mm strip of Xtra-Load Imperma applied centrally over the angle and torch applied.

• At all junctions with the vertical substrate the membrane must be dressed up the vertical a minimum of 100mm to allow a secure overlap with the vertical membrane.

• All overlap joints must be a minimum of 100mm or follow any factory applied selvedge.

• When applying torch-on membranes a continuous 5mm bead of bitumen must extrude from all overlaps as work proceeds.

• In multi-layer waterproofing all overlaps must be staggered against those in the previous layer.

• End laps in adjacent membrane strips must be staggered by at least 150mm to avoid a build up of layers at overlaps.

• All membranes must be protected immediately following installation to avoid damage by other trades or traffic.

• Where vertical drops require more than one length of membrane, ensure a minimum overlap of 100mm at horizontal joints ensuring the lower end of the upper sheet overlaps onto the upper end of the lower sheet.

• At the termination of vertical membranes, the uppermost end should be mechanically restrained with a pre-drilled fixing strap, or wedged and sealed into a chase.

• A detailed inspection for damage and faults must be carried out before the tanking membrane is permanently covered.
