Membrane selectionChoose a filter membrane based on the size and amount of particulate in the sample, the membrane’s chemical compatibility with the sample matrix, and potential interactions (binding) between the membrane and the sample components. This table offers general guidelines on membrane characteristics and applications.
Filter Device SelectionConsider the number of samples, the sample volume, and the filtering mechanism you prefer to use.
Syringe FiltersFiltration is achieved by pushing the sample through the membrane with a syringe or other luer-connection device. Syringe filters allow you to control the rate of flow, which can be critical with delicate samples. Syringe filters also allow you to filter into nearly any tube, vial, or column that represents the next step in your analysis.
Centrifuge Filter TubesFiltration is achieved by pulling the sample through the membrane with centrifugal force. This allows you to simultaneously filter as many samples as your centrifuge can hold, and captures your filtrate in a clean microtube.
Pre-Cut MembraneMultiple diameters offer a wide range of sample capacities, up to multiple liters. You need a filtration apparatus, such as a filter funnel or other vacuum-driven filtration device.
InnoSep™Canadian Life Science Offers Affordable, Quality Syringe Filters
Housing Polypropylene housings are highly solvent resistant and exhibit low extractables. They are ideal for filtering samples orsolvents used in chromatography.
Size4mm syringe filters are useful for filtration up to 1mL of low par-ticulate level chromatography of biological samples.13mm syringe filters have a filtration area of 1.3cm2 and a hold-up volume of less than 30uL with an air purge.Ideal for samples up to 12mL.25mm syringe filters have a filtration area of 4.9cm2 and offer thefastest sample filtration.
MembraneThe cellulose acetate and polysulfone membranes are all lowprotein binding, which makes them well suited for filtration ofbiological samples.PTFE membrane in a PP housing can be used to filter solventsand strong acids.Although PTFE is inherently hydrophobic, it can be madehydrophilic by pre-wetting the membrane with methanol andthen rinsing with water.Nylon or polypropylene are ideal for filtration of chromatographysamples.Polypropylene membranes exhibit near zero extractables, arevery resistant to solvents and most chemicals and would be thefirst choice for filtration of chromatography samples.

TSS Filters for Standard Methods 2540 C and 2540 D
Ensure worry free audits by taking the guesswork out of method complianceXenosep TSS Filters are specifically designed to ensurecompliance with the filter preparation requirements ofStandard Methods 2540 C (Total Dissolved Solids Dried at180°C) and Standard Methods 2540 D (Total SuspendedSolids at 103-105°C). We removed the guesswork typicallyassociated with audit checklist question #6 by making thewrinkle side of the filter visibly different than the screen side. Now everyone can clearly see and easily determine whichside needs to face up to ensure compliance.
In addition to more distinguishable filter surface characteristicsshown at left, these 1.5 µm binder-free, fast flowing, fineporosity borosilicate glass microfiber filters have been opti-mized to eliminate pin holing and minimize fiber shedding; twoquality issues known to affect other brands of TSS filters.Xenosep TSS Filters are readily available in the popular sizesbelow for use in a wide variety of CoorsTek chemical-porcelainlabware including Bitumen, Buchner, Gooch, Hirsch, andmany other popular filter holders.

• Extract samples 5 times faster, • Distill samples 3 times faster • Significantly lower cost per test
The first SPE filter and glass apparatus specially designedfor dirty wastewater samples.Integral design maximizes filtration efficiency, simplifiesanalyte recovery, and ensures reproducible results.
Step 1Extract 1L sample17 seconds is all it takes to filter a 40 mg/L* OPR and achieve98% recovery. Thatʼs 50 times faster than a typical single layerSPE filter with 89% recovery. In addition, triple layer XenosepSPE Filters have 5 times the filtration capacity already built-infor the MS, MSD, and hard-to-filter samples.*As required by EPA Method 1664A
Step 2Elute and dry extractLess filter clogging enables more efficient filter drying andeluting with less solvent. Xenosep sodium sulfate columnssave time by eliminating off-line drying steps or repouring theextracted water sample back into the separatory funnel.
Step 3Distill and oven dry extractLess extraction solvent means faster distillation. Final hexaneextracts distill to dryness in about 10 minutes. Unique flatsided Xenosep flasks reduce oven drying times by 67% so youget QC tests in the dessicator 3 times faster (see Table 1).
Xenosep® SPE Fast Throughput High Capacity FiltersUnique triple layer construction offers fastest samplethroughput and highest filtration capacity
• No emulsions or Freon® non-compliance• Assure legally defensible data• Achieve higher quality results• Reliable and consistent performance• Decrease sample turnaround time• Eliminate additional prefilter expense• Significantly reduce operating cost
Why are 40 mg/L PAR comparisons important?
EPA Method 1664A requires the PAR concentration as follows:“The weight must be 40 ± 1 mg” (Section 7.10.3 NOTE) and atleast this amount are required for the QCS, OPR, MS, MSD,and IPR samples. (Sections 9.8, 9.7, 9.6.1, 9.3.1, 9.2.2, 7.11and 7.10) Although certain method modifications are allowed,a change in the PAR concentration is not expressly permittedand “shall be considered a major modification subject to appli-cation and approval of alternate test procedures under CFR136.4 and 136.5.” (Sections 1.7 and 1.8)
Why expose the defensibility of your data to unnecessary legalrisk? Use 40 mg/L QC samples and achieve higher qualityresults with Xenosep SPE Filters.
