Sabine KLAUS (FILM MAKER)Ilmiye Gazier13433546Sabine Klaus is a filmmaker whose film TRENCH was screened at Edinburghs DANCE and FILM Festival in 2009. This year shes judged the IdeasTap DANCE: FILM brief and will be taking part in a panel discussion at the winners screening on 13 November.Trench: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PciUp7-Gsuo

How is choreographing for the screen different to choreographing for the stage?Ilmiye Gazier13433546They are very different things. A stage piece is perceived in one linear and continuous way. The moment you bring a camera and editing in, you can become non-linear, frame things and change the angle. Not to forget adding special effects like reversing, speeding up, slowing down movements. What the choreographer has to think of and to take into consideration is much more complex.

What can you get from a film as a viewer that you cant get from a live performance?

Ilmiye Gazier13433546The viewers' eyes are more focused and controlled on what they see as the camera has already pre-framed it for them. For example, you can see the detail of a foot but not the rest of the dancer's body. Dance films have the power of time, place and focus.
