Cinematography Camera Techniques

The cinematography techniques used in Pulp Fiction included close ups. This was used on the waitress’ face and also the two main characters’ faces too. These close ups were used to show the audience the expressions and feelings of the character as it’s easiest to see these feelings through their facial expressions and reactions. This close up technique was used fairly often, making it clear to the audience of the characters’ expressions. Another technique used was extreme close up. When the main couple were kissing, this showed romance to the audience between the couple even if they were about to cause chaos in a robbery. The establishing shot was in a diner which shows the audience straight away where the robbery will take place. Although it is not taken from higher up to show the whole diner to show the audience it is an American diner, we already know this through the accents of the main woman and the waitress, the typical chairs of a diner and the uniform worn by the waitress. These things show that the audience do not always need to be shown the diner from a bigger picture as sometimes it can be seen just from the setting that see. Another technique used in a medium shot. This shows the waitress offering the coffee and also when the scene opens with the man and woman which is used throughout too. A two-shot is used with the man and woman too frequently throughout the sequence. A point-of-view shot (POV) is used twice in the sequence, showing the scene by the view of the male protagonist when the waitress is pouring coffee for them. This cinematography technique is used less often. A track is

used where a 45 degree slow track goes towards the main man when talking about the shop owner. This technique is too used less often. A two shot is shown on the right as is a close up.

Visual Effects & Colour Scheme

There was a realistic and warm colour tone used in the Pulp Fiction sequence. There is an orange hue to the sequence as the furniture is mainly orange and pink colours. There is sunlight coming in from the window in the background, lighting up the sequence.

Genre Conventions

This film genre is a crime thriller. The two main characters are using explicit language in their dialogue showing the anger that most robbers have, along with shouting and raising their voice and climbing on top of the diner’s furniture towards the end of the sequence, and they also have guns which is typical of crime film to have too. The dialogue used also discusses their robberies already committed.

Narrative This film sequence’s narrative is to rob different places. The two protagonists are discussing where they should rob next, which turns out to be the diner that they are already in and where the initial establishing shot was. The male protagonist shows the audience in this scene that he is not a man that takes his own advice as he says that after each robbery he won’t do any more yet towards the end of the scene he gets up to do it again.

Editing Techniques

There are cutaways used when the two protagonists are talking about their previous robberies and when the woman is leaning on the table. Eye line match is used throughout the whole of the opening title sequence through their main conversation.
